Positive growth in the travel industry during this year's Hari Raya Aidilfitri holiday season indicates that the rising cost of living is no deterrent for Malaysians to continue travelling, whether locally or beyond the borders.
A 111% growth is seen in international travel bookings made by Malaysians during Hari Raya (March 29-April 6), according to Trip.com. This is in comparison to the previous year's (April 6-14, 2024) numbers.
Meanwhile, domestic travel bookings have doubled (+103%) this year.
The online travel service provider based its findings on its website's booking data for international flights, hotels and attractions, for the aforementioned March-April 2025 (and April 2024) travel periods.
Theme parks prove to be Malaysian travellers' favourite when it comes to family-friendly experiences, as five of the highest-booked attractions during Hari Raya were Universal Studios Japan, Shanghai Disney Resort (China), Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park, Hong Kong Disneyland and Sunway Lagoon Theme Park.

Stephane Thong, general manager of Trip.com Malaysia, says in a press statement: 'We're seeing that this festive season is also becoming a moment for travel discovery, where many are choosing to explore new places while reconnecting with family and friends.'
The rise in bookings for secondary cities and long-haul destinations illustrates this, with cities like Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu – all secondary cities in China – securing top spots in the top 10 list of international destinations (cities) for Malaysian travellers.
Shanghai places first, while Guangzhou places third (after Singapore and before Bangkok, Thailand), and Chengdu places fifth, ahead of Tokyo, Beijing, Hong Kong, Seoul (South Korea) and Taipei.
Two of the Chinese secondary cities are also listed among the international destinations with the biggest growth in travel demand – 261% for Chengdu and 241% for Guangzhou.
Malaysians are also travelling to farther destinations, like New York (United States). There is additionally a 300% increase in bookings for travel to places like Spain, Italy, Netherlands, United Arab Emirates and the Maldives, in comparison to the previous year.
Overall, spending on international flights and hotels sees an increase of 14.5%, indicative of Malaysians' eagerness to explore more international destinations.
Not only that, Malaysian travellers are also making their bookings further in advance. The average booking window has increased to 48.10 days in 2025, compared to 42.63 in 2024.

Heavier traffic expected as Malaysians head to hometowns for Aidiladha

KUALA LUMPUR: Most highways will see heavier traffic as Malaysians head back to their hometowns for Hari Raya Aidiladha tomorrow. Routes on the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway and East Coast Expressway 1 and 2 heading to the east coast and southern states are expected to see the heaviest traffic. Checks with the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) hotline at 5pm revealed that traffic on most roads was still smooth. A LLM traffic monitoring centre spokesperson said traffic volume was higher than usual. "Vehicle numbers continue to rise along the KL-Karak Highway, with slight congestion observed at the Genting Sempah Tunnel. "Beyond that point, traffic is slow but steady." On the North-South Expressway (PLUS), she said heavy traffic was reported from Bidor to Tapah and on the route towards Muar since 4.30pm. She said no accidents have been reported. "In Gua Musang, Kelantan, along Jalan Gua Musang-Kuala Lipis, near Kampung Mentara, traffic is slow due to a road diversion and a high number of people returning for Hari Raya. "The East Coast Expressway 2 is expected to see up to 60,000 vehicles a day during the Aidiladha period, with the peaks expected this evening and on June 8 and 9." Motorists are advised to plan their journeys and stay updated on the latest traffic conditions through official channels such as the PLUSLine at 1-800-88-0000, the LLM hotline at 1-800-88-7752 or the company's or the authority's social media accounts. Traffic is expected to worsen in the evening today as people take off for their hometowns after work. Travellers are encouraged to check the safety and roadworthiness of their vehicles before beginning their trip. They are advised to remain patient and adhere to traffic regulations to ensure a safe and pleasant journey to their destinations.

Bursa Malaysia ends slightly lower tracking regional markets

KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia ended the week slightly lower, tracking the negative performance seen across regional markets, particularly among emerging markets, an analyst said. At 5 pm, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) was down 0.08 per cent, or 1.33 points, to 1,516.79 from Thursday's close of 1,518.12. The benchmark index opened at 1,516.91, less 1.21 points, and moved between 1,513.39 and 1,518.71 throughout the trading session. Market breadth was negative, as decliners outnumbered gainers 478 to 325. A total of 529 counters remained unchanged, with 1,014 untraded and 20 suspended. Turnover dropped to 1.92 billion units worth RM1.66 billion compared with Thursday's 2.42 billion units valued at RM2.27 billion. Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd equity research vice-president Thong Pak Leng told Bernama that key regional indices ended mixed as investors remained cautious, awaiting further signals on trade negotiations between the United States (US) and key regional players, especially China. Besides, he said that the weak performance on Wall Street overnight hurt market sentiment globally. Meanwhile, UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd head of investment research Mohd Sedek Jantan said the FBM KLCI posted a marginal decline, despite Thursday's notable technical rebound, which helped cushion broader losses. He said gains were concentrated mainly in select index constituents, supported by short-term technical recovery and renewed optimism surrounding data centre-related themes. However, foreign investors continued to pare down their holdings in Malaysian equities, marking a third consecutive week of net selling. Additionally, although US President Donald Trump described his phone conversation with President Xi Jinping as "very good', the remarks failed to lift sentiment meaningfully. Asian markets closed mixed, with major Chinese indices ending in negative territory, highlighting persistent investor caution amid unresolved geopolitical and macroeconomic headwinds. Meanwhile, risk sentiment on Wall Street was briefly pressured by a public feud between Trump and businessman Elon Musk, centred on threats to revoke Musk's government contracts. "At this stage, we view the issue as isolated, with limited impact on the broader technology sector in both the US and Malaysian markets,' said Mohd Sedek. Among the heavyweights, Petronas Chemicals shed 11 sen to RM3.25, Press Metal Aluminium eased 7.0 sen to RM4.96, 99 Speed Mart Retail slid 2.0 sen to RM2.09, RHB Bank reduced 5.0 sen to RM6.35, and Petronas Dagangan fell by 14 sen to RM21.00. Among the most active stocks, MYE added 1.5 sen to 94.5 sen, Tanco and Gamuda rose 3.0 sen each to RM1.03 and RM4.77, respectively, KPJ dropped 3.0 sen to RM2.75, and Signature Alliance Group gained 1.0 sen to 71 sen. On the index board, the FBM Emas Index weakened 7.49 points to 11,355.34, the FBMT 100 Index cut 4.67 points to 11,123.69, but the FBM ACE Index gained 1.18 points to 4,519.32. The FBM Emas Shariah Index gave up 11.52 points to 11,329.22, but the FBM 70 Index recovered 13.26 points to 16,296.57. Sector-wise, the Financial Services Index fell 31.26 points to 17,708.31, and the Industrial Products and Services Index was 1.32 points lower at 150.80. However, the Energy Index rose 9.84 points to 718.45, and the Plantation Index grew 33.47 points to 7,252.85. The Main Market volume narrowed to 964.07 million units valued at RM1.46 billion compared to Thursday's 1.16 billion units worth RM2.00 billion. Warrants turnover dwindled to 706.23 million units worth RM98.53 million from 898.22 million units valued at RM114.39 million yesterday. The ACE Market volume declined to 249.20 million shares, valued at RM105.00 million, compared with 361.18 million shares worth RM153.86 million previously. Consumer products and services counters accounted for 123.80 million shares traded on the Main Market, industrial products and services (164.82 million), construction (86.55 million), technology (154.08 million), SPAC (nil), financial services (54.91 million), property (133.50 million), plantation (8.96 million), REITs (14.57 million), closed-end funds (4,000), energy (79.64 million), healthcare (48.05 million), telecommunications and media (39.11 million), transportation and logistics (17.48 million), utilities (38.55 million), and business trusts (1,000). - Bernama

China, HK stocks close down as US-China call offers no clear progress on trade

A screen displays market movements in the Shanghai Stock Exchange. — AFP SHANGHAI: China and Hong Kong stocks ended slightly lower on Friday, as investors remained cautious after a call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping failed to provide clear signals of progress in easing trade tensions. Trump and Xi confronted weeks of brewing trade tensions and a battle over critical minerals in a rare leader-to-leader call on Thursday, leaving key issues unresolved for future talks. "If you look at the conversation between Chinese and U.S. presidents, there's nothing concrete that's positive. So little impact on stocks," said Guo Jianwen, partner at Shanghai-based hedge fund Haiyi Capital. China's blue-chip CSI300 Index fell 0.1%, while the Shanghai Composite Index was flat. Hong Kong benchmark Hang Seng Index dipped 0.5%. For the holiday-shortened week, the CSI 300 Index gained nearly 1%, while the Hang Seng Index rose 2.2%. "The only good news is that things are not getting worse," said William Xin, chairman of Shanghai-based hedge fund Spring Mountain Pu Jiang Investment Management. "If Trump can come to China for a visit in the short term, that would be hugely positive." Chinese markets have lacked clear direction since April 2, when Trump unveiled sweeping reciprocal tariffs, raising fears of a global trade disruption. The blue-chip CSI300 Index has barely budged from the April 2 level, and Hong Kong's benchmark Hang Seng Index gained less than 3% during the period, both lagging the recovery seen among major global markets. Investors should not over-interpret the talk as both sides are still struggling to adapt to each other in a broad confrontational trend, said Charles Wang, chairman, Shenzhen Dragon Pacific Capital Management. Wang said the most significant takeaway from the leaders' exchange was Xi's warning to Trump against provocative actions on Taiwan, which he interpreted as a signal that Beijing is not preparing for a near-term military move. Chinese tech American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) rose just 0.85% in New York overnight following the call, while tech majors listed in Hong Kong fell 0.6%. Onshore non-ferrous metal shares gained 1.1%, and materials stocks listed in Hong Kong jumped 2.4%. China's 10-year and 30-year government bond yields held steady, after the country's central bank said it would inject 1 trillion yuan ($139.23 billion) cash to its banking system via outright reverse repos on Friday. - Reuters
