Gerik crash: Permit holder of the bus breached rules, rented out licence, says Loke
KUALA LUMPUR: The Transport Ministry has revealed that the permit holder of the bus involved in the crash that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students, had breached multiple conditions — including leasing the permit to a third party.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the permit holder, who is based in Kedah, had rented out the permit to an individual in Kelantan for RM500 a month.
He added that the permit holder had also failed to submit GPS data when requested, as the vehicle's tracking system was found to be inactive.

The crash occurred when the chartered bus, en route from Jertih to UPSI's main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, collided with a Perodua Alza multipurpose vehicle before overturning. The accident also left 33 others injured, including the bus driver and his assistant, as well as the driver and three passengers of the Perodua Alza. Meanwhile, Mohamad Nasir said that eight death certificates were handed over to the next of kin at their respective residences today, adding that five others were collected by family members at the NRD counters, whereas two more are still being processed. 'This is an initiative by the NRD to ease the burden on families by handling the death registration process for their children without requiring them to be present at the NRD counters in Besut or Setiu,' he added.

Manjung district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Hasbullah Abd Rahman, said the investigations are being conducted under Section 504 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. He said the investigation was launched following a report lodged at the Manjung district police headquarters at 4.40pm yesterday regarding a Facebook post by an account under the name 'Khalid Yunus'. "The account published an offensive message about the UPSI students involved in the recent road tragedy. "We advise the public not to upload any content that may cause unease or disrupt public order," he said in a statement today. Earlier, it was reported that the Perak State Education Department had directed the district education office to prepare a full report on the teacher's social media post. Perak state executive councillor for education, higher learning, youth and sports Khairudin Abu Hanipah was quoted as saying that investigations found the Facebook account to belong to a teacher serving at a secondary school in the state. The teacher sparked controversy after posting an offensive remark that went viral and caused distress to the victims' families. On Monday, a bus carrying 42 UPSI students was travelling from Jertih, Terengganu, to the university's main campus when it collided with a Perodua Alza at KM53 of the East-West Highway in Gerik. Thirteen died at the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries in hospital. The driver, his attendant, the other UPSI students, and a family of four travelling in the Alza sustained various injuries. ends
