Lucy Liu to Receive Locarno Film Festival Career Honor, Present Int'l Premiere of ‘Rosemead'
Lucy Liu will attend the 78th edition of the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland this summer to receive a career achievement award and present the international premiere of her film Rosemead, organizers unveiled on Tuesday, highlighting that she is 'widely celebrated for her iconic performances across film, television, and stage.'
The festival will bestow the honor upon Liu on the evening of Thursday, Aug. 14, with the star afterwards set to present her film Rosemead about the Asian American mental health crisis, alongside the film's cast and crew. The actress plays a Chinese immigrant battling a terminal illness while navigating her son's worsening schizophrenia in Eric Lin's directorial debut that premiered at Tribeca.

The festival audience will also have an opportunity to see and hear Liu the following day during a public conversation event.
'With a career spanning over three decades, critically acclaimed actress and filmmaker Lucy Liu has starred in films that have collectively grossed over $3.7 billion worldwide,' Locarno said. 'From her iconic roles in Kill Bill, Charlie's Angels, Chicago, Set It Up, Presence, and Red One, Liu continues to redefine what it means to be a leading woman in Hollywood.'
They also highlighted: 'Liu's career began with her breakout role in Ally McBeal, earning both Emmy and SAG nominations, and she has since become a pioneering force in television. Her extensive credits include standout series like Why Women Kill, Elementary, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Star Wars: Visions, and A Man in Full.'
The Locarno team also put a spotlight on Liu's other artistic work. As a visual artist and recipient of the Harvard University Arts Medal, her mixed-media paintings and sculptures have been exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide, including the National Museum of Singapore, the Napa Valley Museum, and the New York Studio School. She has also been commissioned to create a series of paintings for the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne for 2026.

Nazzaro, artistic director of the Locarno Film Festival, highlighted. The 78th Locarno festival runs Aug. 6-16. Hong Kong and global film icon Jackie Chan will also attend it to receive a Pardo alla Carriera, or Career Leopard award.

Jeremy Clarkson has shared a health update amid filming the next series of Clarkson's Farm. The former Top Gear presenter, 65, has recently been back on screens with the fourth series of his hit Amazon show - and a fifth series is now underway filming. But he shared in his latest The Sunday Times column, which was a car review, that he's been having health issues. 'I have a trapped nerve in my back at the moment," he said. "It's fine if I'm not doing anything, but in the [Mercedes-Benz] G 580, not doing anything is impossible because it pitches and yaws and rolls all the time, and you never have any idea what it's going to do next. "So you can't ever brace yourself." It's not the only health update Clarkson has recently given, he recently shared a candid health update after a recent prostate examination. The farmer shared his experiences of the screening, as he revealed he has had too many friends 'go down' with prostate cancer. It comes a year after the star was just days from death before he underwent heart surgery to clear blocked arteries. Writing in his weekly column for The Sunday Times, Mr Clarkson said his late doctor rarely informed him of any medical issues. According to Clarkson, the medic 'was too busy name-dropping' his other celebrity clients, such as singer Rita Ora, while undergoing checks. The 65-year-old, who recently claimed to have lost about a stone and a half after using the Mounjaro weight-loss jab, added that he now pays for his own medicals 'every couple of years'. He then began talking about having a prostate exam, which involves a doctor inserting a finger into the rectum. Clarkson said that he does not mind the process as 'we do need to know this stuff', as prostate cancer kills around 9,000 men in England every year. He then reflected on unnamed friends who have been struck with the most common type of cancer in Britain. Clarkson wrote: 'I've had too many friends go down with prostate cancer, and all it takes to get on top of the situation early is a moment or two of being a bit cross-eyed. 'You get the all-clear and the doc goes home happy. What's not to like? I went home very happy because the initial probing and photographing suggests all is well. 'And let me tell you, nothing makes you feel better than knowing for sure you're not going to drop dead tomorrow morning.'

In a Passionate Composer's First Opera, Sex Flirts With Death
Toward the end of 'Lash,' a new opera by Rebecca Saunders, a vocal quartet of invites the listener to 'come to bed and die.' Saunders, 57, is a masterly composer whose recent music is becoming more passionate, expressive and lyrical than ever. An artist whose works are regularly performed throughout Europe, she has won many prizes, including the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at last year's Venice Music Biennale. Her subtle music has an unmistakable momentum. The text of the opera is by Ed Atkins, an artist and writer who often uses hyper-realistic C.G.I. video to unsettling effect. A critically acclaimed, career-spanning exhibition of his work is currently on show at Tate Britain in London, and his 'Old Food,' which featured sandwiches filled with uncannily modified bodies, was shown at the 2019 Venice Art Biennale. Like his video work, Atkins's prose is obsessed with the strangeness of sex and death. On Friday, 'Lash' will premiere at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. It is Saunders's first opera and Atkins's first libretto. Though Saunders wrote a piece based on words by Atkins, 'Us Dead Talk Love,' in 2021, 'Lash' is the first time the artists have shaped a piece together from the beginning. That relationship allowed Saunders to finally take on an opera. 'I didn't want to give a piece to somebody and just let go,' Saunders said.
