The
Montreal Canadiens
put on a show to remember in front of a packed Bell Centre audience, posting six goals in a thrilling 6-3 win over the
Washington Capitals
in Game 3 of their Eastern Conference First Round playoff series. The enthusiastic fans, having their home playoff game in 2017, made the atmosphere loud as it fueled the Montreal Canadiens for a much-desired victory. Even though the Washington Capitals were leading the best-of-seven series 2-1, the spirit in Montreal could not be helped.
Lane Hutson, Juraj Slafkovsky, and Nick Suzuki share about frenzied playoff energy
NHL Game 3 Highlights | Capitals vs. Canadiens - April 25, 2025
Right from the beginning, the din within Bell Centre was ear-shattering. Defenseman Lane Hutson has called it 'crazy', and forward Juraj Slafkovsky agreed, and captain
Nick Suzuki
described it as 'emotional'. Winger
Cole Caufield
summed it up as briefly 'energetic', only capturing the spirit of the night when the Montreal Canadiens proceeded to put on an overwhelming show of performance.
Forwards Montreal Canadiens players Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Juraj Slafkovsky formed the top-scoring trio. Caufield led with 11 shot attempts, ending with a tie-breaking winning goal in the second period late that saw the Canadiens take a 3-2 lead. Slafkovsky added a goal of his own and kept impressing with five shots, motivating teammates and fans in tow.
Fights, injuries, and emergency goalie drama add flavor to Game 3 mayhem
Game 3 was not lacking in drama. Both starting goalies, Montreal Canadiens' Sam Montembeault and Washington Capitals' Logan Thompson, left the game injured. Montreal's backup, Jakub Dobes, was summoned into emergency duty, entering the game in the middle of the second period and standing firm against heavy pressure.
The physicality came to a boil late in the second period when Canadiens forward Josh Anderson and Capitals veteran Tom Wilson fought into the Washington bench, with an official having to break up the melee. Juraj Slafkovsky conceded he was drawn to enter the fray, referring to the incident as 'nuts'.
The sold-out Bell Centre crowd, already operating at rock concert-level decibel readings during warmups, reached a fever pitch when defenseman Alexandre Carrier tied the game late in the first period, setting the tone for the Canadiens' relentless effort the rest of the night.
Montreal Canadiens seek to gain momentum going into Game 4
Montreal Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki praised the team's calm composure after Alex Ovechkin temporarily levelled the score at 3-3 with minutes left in the third period. Rather than faltering, the Canadiens maintained pressure and broke away for the decisive victory.

Ivan Demidov set for Calder Trophy run as Montreal Canadiens chase back-to-back wins

Demidov powers Montreal's Calder Trophy hopes (Image via: Getty Images) Lane Hutson made history this year by becoming the first Montreal Canadiens player since 1972 to win the Calder Trophy. But the spotlight is already shifting to the next big name: Ivan Demidov. After a promising start in the NHL, Demidov is entering the 2024–25 season with high expectations and many believe he could bring the Calder home again. Montreal eyes second straight Calder Trophy with Demidov in focus For the first time in over five decades, a Montreal Canadiens rookie claimed the NHL's top rookie honour. Lane Hutson's Calder Trophy win in 2024 not only marked a personal milestone but also ended a 52-year drought for the franchise. Now, the attention has quickly shifted to another young name making waves — Ivan Demidov. The 18-year-old Russian forward arrived in Montreal after a strong campaign in the KHL and didn't take long to draw attention. Despite limited NHL minutes toward the end of last season, Demidov showed flashes of skill that highlighted why he was one of the most talked-about international prospects. Canadiens' Ivan Demidov Targeting His NHL Debut | Saturday Headlines His early form has already sparked conversations among fans and analysts alike. Can the Canadiens do what no NHL team has done in more than 50 years — produce back-to-back Calder winners? The last to manage that feat was the Boston Bruins, with Bobby Orr in 1967 followed by Derek Sanderson in 1968. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Device Made My Power Bill Drop Overnight elecTrick - Save upto 80% on Power Bill Pre-Order Undo Since then, the NHL has grown in size and competition, making consecutive wins for teammates an increasingly rare achievement. However, Montreal's shift toward a youth-first approach could create the right conditions for it to happen again. The Canadiens have been steadily building a core around young talent. With names like Cole Caufield, Nick Suzuki, Kaiden Guhle, and now Hutson already in place, Demidov steps into a system that not only supports but accelerates player development. He's expected to see regular minutes and play a more involved role from the outset. The 2025 Calder Trophy race is expected to be competitive, with several top rookies across the league set to make their mark. But Demidov holds a few key advantages—brief but valuable NHL experience, a strong support system, and a style of play that fits modern league demands. Resilient Mathurin stars in Pacers win

Bennedict Mathurin's game-changing performance in game three of the NBA Finals felt like a long time coming, but the 22-year-old Canadian made sure he was ready when the opportunity arrived. Mathurin came off the bench to score 27 points in Indiana's 116-107 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday, which gave the Pacers a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven championship series. In 22:24 minutes on court through the second and fourth quarters, Mathurin was a brutally efficient nine-of 12 from the field, making two of his three three-point attempts and seven of eight free-throws, adding in four rebounds an assist and a blocked shot for good measure. "Just staying ready," Mathurin said. "Whenever my number is called, go into the game and do the right things and try to help my team win that's the whole mindset." Mathurin is playing in the playoffs for the first time, after watching the Pacers' run to the Eastern Conference finals from the bench in the wake of season-ending surgery in March of 2024. Even then, the Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said, the 22-year-old Canadian was looking ahead. "He was with the team. He just wasn't playing," Carlisle recalled. "He took a lot of notes, a lot of mental notes, and he may have written some things down. "I do know that after he sustained the injury, it was either in February or early March, you can order these calendars that start on a specific day and then they count days. "So there was a calendar sitting in our training room and every day he would come in and take one off, take one off. He was counting the days down to being cleared sometime in August and then be able to begin training camp, begin five-on-five with our guys in September and then be in training camp, really, with his eyes firmly set on an opportunity in the playoffs. "So he's putting a lot of work to be ready for these moments, and tonight he was an absolute major factor." Mathurin said he was "fortunate to learn a lot" in what was an unfortunate situation last year but he admitted that it wasn't easy. Playing in the Finals, in front of the intense fans in Indianapolis, "is a dream" but one he doesn't want to get caught up in. "I'm not trying to live in my dream," he said. "I'm trying to live in the present and make sure the dream ends well, which means winning next game and winning a championship." bb/rcw
