DU removes Manusmriti from Sanskrit course
New Delhi: On the day TOI reported that
Delhi University
's Sanskrit department had included the Manusmriti, an ancient Hindu legal text on law and social duties, in the core curriculum in its 'Dharamshastra Studies' course, the university announced its removal on social media.
The official DU tweet stated: "University of Delhi will not teach Manusmriti text in any course of the university. 'Dharamshastra Studies', the DSC of the Sanskrit Department, where Manusmriti is mentioned as a 'recommended reading' stands deleted." The post tagged several govt dignitaries.
The inclusion of Manusmriti, known for its controversial social codes, sparked widespread criticism. Earlier, vice-chancellor Yogesh Singh stated that any such proposals to incorporate such texts would not be entertained by the university.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday issued shoot-at-sight orders in the state's Dhubri district after a 'group became active with the intention of damaging our temples.' In a message posted on X, the CM said, 'A particular group has become active in Dhubri with the intention of damaging our temples. We have issued shoot-at-sight orders.' "I visited Dhubri and directed law enforcement officers to follow ZERO tolerance against elements who desecrate our temples, Naamghars and sacred spaces. The incident of throwing beef at the town's Hanuman Mandir should have NEVER happened, and those involved WON'T BE SPARED," Sarma wrote in a post on X. In a later post on X, the CM stated that he would guard the Hanuman Baba temple all night long if it was needed. "This time on Eid, some anti-social elements committed a disgusting and condemnable crime by throwing cow meat in the Hanuman temple of Dhubri! If required on the coming Eid, I myself will guard Hanuman Baba's temple all night long," the post read. With no new untoward incident reported following communal tension, the Dhubri district administration on Tuesday withdrew the prohibitory orders from the headquarters town and allowed all shops to open, news agency PTI reported, quoting officials. The law and order situation in Dhubri town deteriorated following protests after pieces of meat were found near a temple in Dhubri town on Sunday. Tear gas shells were lobbed to disperse the agitators on Monday and restrictions on public movement were imposed. Dhubri District Commissioner Dibakar Nath told PTI that the situation in Dhubri town is under control at present. "We have revoked yesterday's (Monday) order. Shops and markets have opened now," he added. Nath also said that several peace committees have been formed in various sensitive localities of the town, comprising members from both Hindu and Muslim communities. On Monday, miscreants reportedly attacked vegetable vendors and e-rickshaw drivers near Dhubri Magistrate Colony and New Market. Police rushed to the scene and fired tear gas shells to disperse the mob and regain control of the situation, the PTI report said. To prevent further flare-ups of "communal tension, riot risk or violent protests", the administration immediately clamped restrictions under section 163 of BNSS and ordered all shops and market establishments in the town to remain closed. It also prohibited the assembly of five or more people in any public places, intending for demonstration or meeting or procession.

Assam: 22 arrested after communal violence in Dhubri, nighttime shoot-at-sight orders issued
Twenty-two persons have been arrested in connection with communal tensions that broke out in Assam's Dhubri town on Sunday after the remains of an animal were discovered near the premises of a Hindu temple, the police said on Friday. 'Lawful action is being taken,' the police added. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told reporters later that he visited the area to review the situation and had issued shoot-at-sight orders for nighttime. 'Whoever will create disturbance, we will shoot them,' said Sarma, adding that the Rapid Action Force and the Central Reserve Police Force had been deployed in Dhubri. The chief minister also claimed that the animal remains found near the temple were part of the head of a cow. 'The day after Bakri Eid [on Sunday], some persons kept a severed cow head in front of a Hanuman temple,' claimed Sarma. 'Representatives of both the communities met thereafter, a peace committee meeting was held and the conflict seemed to have been resolved.' The chief minister claimed that the next day, another severed animal head was found in front of the temple premises, which sparked violence. Widespread protests had broken out in Dhubri on Sunday morning, with a large number of residents blocking a road adjacent to the temple. They shouted slogans and burned tyres as part of their demonstration. They also prevented the police from removing the remains of the animal, insisting that it must remain untouched until 'those responsible are identified and arrested'. As the demonstrations continued till Monday, Deputy Commissioner Dibakar Nath issued orders prohibiting five or more persons from gathering in the town of Dhubri under section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. The administration has also banned rallies, processions, meetings or demonstrations. The situation was brought under control by Tuesday and the prohibitory orders were withdrawn. On Friday, the Assam chief minister claimed that a day before Bakri Eid, which was celebrated on June 7, a poster showing Dhubri to be part of Bangladesh was found in the town. Sarma alleged that a communal group was attempting to spread tensions in the area. Dhubri shares a border with Bangladesh to the west. The Bharatiya Janata Party leader had said on Sunday that 16 persons were arrested in the state for allegedly slaughtering cattle illegally on Bakri Eid.
