Former Team GB swimmer, Ellie Simmonds, has shared the heart-wrenching decision she's grappling with concerning whether to have children, confessing that she's "just not ready" for the emotional weight of the issue.
The Paralympic champion was born in Derbyshire but grew up in Swansea from age 11 to make use of the region's excellent swimming facilities.

Now 30, the five-time Paralympic gold winner, who hung up her goggles in 2021, is contemplating what life holds next. Ellie, who lives with achondroplasia, a common cause of dwarfism, finds herself at a crossroads about embarking on motherhood.

She discussed the topic tonight, Tuesday, May 27, in her new ITV documentary, 'Ellie Simmonds: Should I Have Children? For the latest TV and showbiz gossip sign up to our newsletter .
During her personal journey, Ellie discovers a distressing truth regarding her potential future pregnancies.
If she were to conceive with a partner who also has dwarfism, there is a 25% risk their child could inherit a fatal 'double dose' of the condition. Ellie reflects deeply on this information, commenting: "No parent should have to go through that. While I'm not at the stage of wanting a baby just yet, it's something I will have to consider." You can read more about Ellie's baby dilemma here.

She said: "Being a 30-year-old woman, this is the time people think about starting a family. But my situation is different because I live with a disability, so I understand what it's like to be a disabled person. When people find out they're having a disabled baby, do they worry that they won't be able to cope? Are they nervous? Do they want a picture-perfect baby?"
The documentary delved deep into the difficulties faced by prospective parents who are informed their child could have disabilities. Ellie met with different families who have children with disabilities.
This included Rosie and Lloyd who learned that their son Arlo was going to be born with dwarfism during a 28-week scan and Megan and David, whose daughter Cerys has Down's syndrome.

In the programme, the swimmer examined the array of choices before her, ranging from using sperm donors or freezing her eggs to considering adoption.
Ellie is one of five adopted siblings and was adopted just ten days after her birth mother placed her for adoption upon finding out that she was disabled.
Reconnecting two years ago while participating in the documentary, 'Finding My Secret Family', it wasn't until the creation of her new candid documentary that Ellie felt ready to discuss such a delicate subject with her birth mother.

In the documentary, Ellie reflected on her feelings of being "given up" and being "rejected" because of her disability by her birth mother.
She said: "I want to know what it was like for her to decide to put me up for adoption. For her it was 30 years ago, but it's quite a sensitive, super emotional situation."
Her birth mother, who chose to remain anonymous during the interview, poured out her heartache: "It's really quite traumatic. It's hard for you to hear.

"I don't want to in any way upset you. You're making a decision at the wrong time of your life, because you've just given birth, your hormones are all over the place. You're physically not right, you're mentally not right."
She opened up about the daunting obstacles she faced back then, recounting: "There was a lot in the background going on. I kept the pregnancy a secret, I gave birth on my own. I went to a geneticist and she was very abrupt. She said: 'There you go, that's what your baby is going to look like'. I remember thinking I can't cope with this. Maybe I wanted a magic wand."
Delving deeper into her personal turmoil, she elaborated: "All I could see was your disability. You can make excuses, but I really did struggle.

"I grieved the child that I thought you should have been. It was the biggest decision of my life. To give your biological child away... it was momentous. I just handed you over and that's something you really can never get over. The guilt is horrendous. You live with it all the time."

Acknowledging her unwavering thoughts about her child, she expressed: "I didn't ever forget you. I thought about you every day. When I saw you at the Beijing Paralympics, I thought 'That's my Ellie'. I've been a number one fan.

"I've watched everything you've done, I'm extremely proud. It's an amazing thing to have a child, there's no love like it. Fast forward 30 years and I realise what a fabulous woman you are. It's just that you were a bit shorter. You're a completely perfect person in every way."
As Ellie listened, overcome with emotion and largely silent, her birth mother continued to speak. Ellie eventually mustered the courage to say: "We don't want to blame anyone, decisions are decisions. You're amazing".
Yet, her birth mother responded with raw honesty: "I don't know Ellie, I think sometimes it was quite cowardly to be honest."

Reflecting on their heartfelt exchange, Ellie observed: "It seems that she held that guilt for a long time. That's really sad. We put a lot of pressure on the mum in society. It's amazing that she's so honest and open. I think people's fear of a disability is actually a fear of what's inside of them."

Coronation Street twist in ITVX release as the truth about Lisa's ex Becky is confirmed

This article contains spoilers for tonight's Coronation Street, which has not yet aired on TV but is available to watch now on ITVX. It was a tough day on Coronation Street for many of the residents in tonight's instalment of the ITV soap, as they said their goodbyes to Craig Tinker, following his murder last month. Ahead of his memorial service, DS Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers) appeared to be struggling more than most, with Craig's brutal death bringing back painful memories of wife Becky's murder. In a bid to try and distract herself from the tough afternoon, Lisa decided to have a sort out, which drew Betsy Swain's (Sydney Martin) attention to some old files. As soon as she flipped one open, Lisa was on her, demanding that she mind her own business, leaving the teen concerned that her mum was having some kind of breakdown. With Betsy convinced that Lisa was hiding something, she later confronted her about the contents of the file, and Lisa explained that it contained information about Betsy's donor that she isn't legally allowed to see until she turns 18. However, Betsy wasn't convinced, and was soon caught rooting through the files by Carla Connor (Alison King). When Lisa returned home and found the files disrupted, she was horrified that Betsy had read the contents, and soon confessed to Carla what they really contained. She revealed that, before her death, Becky was being investigated by the anti-corruption unit, and Lisa was keen to keep that information from Betsy. Lisa emotionally opened up about how she and Becky had fought over the allegations the day Becky was killed, and though the investigation was dropped, she didn't get the funeral she deserved. Carla urged Lisa to be honest with Betsy, so she called her to the station to talk. However, when Betsy insisted that she hadn't read the letter because she wasn't interested in knowing who her sperm donor was, Lisa decided to keep quiet about what the letter was really about. More Trending Unfortunately, Betsy wasn't being entirely honest either, as she later revealed to Lauren Bolton (Cait Fitton) that she knew exactly what the letter was about. She confessed that she was convinced Becky's hit and run had been a coverup of some sort, and asked Lauren for her help in getting to the bottom of things. ITV axes beloved breakfast show segment in new cost-cutting measures

ITV has been forced to make more major cuts in an attempt to manage costs and it is bad news for some huge breakfast stars. ITV's Andi Peters and Jeff Brazier will reportedly no longer be sent on lavish holidays abroad as the broadcaster have been forced to cut all their expenses-paid trips. Over the past year, the duo have been whisked off to a number of sun-soaked locations to front ITV competitions, appearing on programmes such as Good Morning Britain, Loose Women, This Morning and Lorraine. Andi's enviable locations have included the Maldives, Australia, Cape Town, and Florida while Jeff has been sent to Thailand, Sri Lanka and Malta. However, channel executives believe it's in "bad taste" to continue flying presenters to exotic destinations after announcing hundreds of devastating redundancies across ITV as part of their cost-saving measures. ‌ An insider told MailOnline: "ITV have scaled back on sending top talent overseas to present their competition segments. The competitions themselves, which give viewers the chance to win six figure sums and idyllic holidays, bring in a great deal of revenue, but constantly flying the likes of Andi and Jeff to the Maldives and South Africa was starting to frustrate staff and viewers alike." ‌ The source continued: "It was decided that they would dial down for a few weeks after the budget cuts were announced and no one has flown overseas to present the competitions since. "As well as there being a backlash online from disgruntled viewers, it was felt continuing to send talent abroad to luxurious holiday destinations as others are losing their jobs would be in bad taste." ITV's budget cuts were first announced last month, with a number of popular programmes taking a huge hit as the broadcaster battles a mounting financial crisis, the Express reports. ‌ The Lorraine Show will lose its long-standing hour-long slot from January 2026 , and will now air for just 30 minutes from 9:30am until 10am. The show, presented by Lorraine Kelly, has seen its airtime been slashed in half and the talk show has also been restricted to being broadcast just 30 weeks of the year. ‌ Fears have been circulating that the Scots presenter may quit her show, which has been running since 2010, as a result of the cuts. Lorraine received the news after returning to work following a surgery to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes last year. The surgery was described as "preventative" and performed via keyhole surgery. ‌ As part of the shake-up, Good Morning Britain will have its current 6am to 9am slot extended until 9:30am. During the 22 weeks of the year that Lorraine will now be off-air, Good Morning Britain's airtime has been extended until 10am, adding an extra hour to its original schedule. Meanwhile, This Morning will still air from 10:30am to 12:30pm but another show which is being scaled back is Loose Women. The popular ITV daytime programme will now also air on a seasonal basis for just 30 weeks a year. According to MailOnline, Loose Women is set to scrap their live audience due to the ongoing budget cuts.
