
6 ways effective leaders think like astronauts
I've served the NASA space program for many years as an adviser, research scientist, flight surgeon—and astronaut. My career has encompassed both in-flight and non-flight contributions to NASA, supporting space missions, space medicine, and research in advancing human space flight.
Space exploration encompasses a fair amount of uncertainty by nature. The space program's early days were fraught with a number of crew losses, including the Apollo 1 mission, and the Challenger and Columbia space shuttle missions. The challenges of space flight were on full display during the Apollo 13 crew's near-disastrous mission on the way to the moon in 1970. We all know those infamous words: 'Houston, we have a problem.' But the determination of a mission control team led by flight director Gene Kranz—marked by the phrase 'failure is not an option'—ended in a successful mission.
Anyone, though, can pick up smart leadership lessons from space travel, even if you're not headed to the moon yourself. Here's how the best leaders think like astronauts.
Recognize The Power of Vision
Every great leader starts with a vision. Whether you are leading a company, a team, or a personal endeavor, the ability to see beyond present circumstances and chart a course for the future is what separates extraordinary leaders from the rest.
When I first dreamed of becoming an astronaut, I had no road map. The road ahead was full of uncertainty, doubts, and obstacles. After determining that doctors were needed in the space program, my pathway was set. My goal was to become a physician with the knowledge and skills to work in space. But I learned early on that it's not about having all the answers—it's about having the courage to pursue a vision, adapt to challenges, and inspire others along the way. In business, just as in space exploration, those who succeed are the ones who remain focused on their mission despite adversity.
Turn the Vision into a Mission
The mark of a good leader is their ability to transform the vision into tangible goals and objectives for the mission. We accomplish this at NASA through extensive training and mission preparation. The flight crew and mission support team dedicate countless hours to training in simulators and facilities, preparing for every scenario, whether it's smooth sailing or unforeseen challenges. They focus on identifying the critical factors for success, then conduct 'nominal' training for ideal outcomes and 'off-nominal' training to tackle potential setbacks.
We have a saying in the Astronaut Corps: 'Fly as you train.' Training reflects conditions similar to those of the mission so we're best prepared for the unexpected. Once those conditions are clear, we set high expectations to drive high performance.
People and organizations can achieve amazing things when they know what's expected of them. The most successful leaders embrace challenges, set high expectations, remain adaptable, and focus on the greater impact of their work.
Let High Expectations Drive High Performance
Leaders who expect mediocrity will get just that, while those who challenge their teams to push beyond limits foster excellence.
On my second flight, STS–63 in February 1995, we had multiple challenges. During my spacewalk, my fellow crew member and I experienced unexpected extreme temperatures of -165°F at orbital night and +200°F during the day, which exceeded the temperature capability of the space suit. There were other malfunctions on the mission, like issues with critical equipment on the spacecraft that almost canceled our rendezvous with the Russian space station.
NASA's training program assumes that astronauts must be prepared for the unknown. The same principle applies in business. Leaders must prepare their teams for challenges that may not yet exist, setting expectations that encourage innovation, accountability, and excellence.
If you want to see growth in your organization, ask yourself: Are you setting high-enough expectations? Are you fostering a culture where your team is encouraged to reach beyond what they believe is possible? Success is often the result of leaders who challenge their teams to think bigger, work harder, and embrace bold ideas.
Buckle into Resilience in Challenging Times
One of the most valuable leadership lessons is understanding that failure is not the enemy—complacency is. Some of the best business leaders I have met share one trait: they're not afraid of failing. They see failure as feedback, as a necessary component of growth.
I also had moments of uncertainty during my first flight—STS-55 in April 1993. As we were about to launch, one of the three main engines of the Space Shuttle Columbia failed 2.5 seconds before liftoff. Fortunately, the safety system worked, cutting the fuel to the engine while simultaneously putting out the ensuing fire. This event certainly got my attention, as we say when things don't go well. I'm lucky to be here today.
During my astronaut training and missions, I faced countless setbacks. Physical demands of endless hours of spacewalk training underwater in the neutral buoyancy facility pushed me to my limits, technical challenges of microgravity simulation forced me to rethink strategies, and high-stakes flight simulations that exposed weaknesses I needed to improve. Had I let failure define me, rather than energize me, I would never have made it to space.
Resilience is just as crucial for leadership in life and business. Markets change, competitors arise, and setbacks occur. The best leaders are those who are resilient and thrive to adapt, learn, and continue forward with an unwavering commitment to their goals.
Maintain Confidence in the Face of Adversity
Great leaders possess both confidence and humility. Confidence allows you to make bold decisions, take risks, and lead with conviction. But humility ensures that you remain open to new ideas, feedback, and growth.
In my career at NASA, in venture capital, and as an entrepreneur, I've worked with some of the most brilliant minds in science, engineering, and business. The leaders who stand out are those who strongly believe in their abilities yet understand they don't have all the answers. They surround themselves with talented individuals, listen more than they speak, and remain adaptable in the face of change.
In your leadership journey, have the confidence to make difficult decisions and the humility to recognize that leadership is a lifelong learning process.

After my time at NASA, I joined SpaceHab as an SVP and chief medical officer, contributing to one of the pioneering companies in commercial spaceflight. In 2002, I founded a venture capital firm focused on telemedicine and healthcare technologies. Later, I founded the Harris Foundation and Institute, which has been involved in math and science education for over 25 years.
Leadership is not just about personal success—it's about the impact you leave behind. For business leaders, this means looking beyond profit margins and quarterly results. What is accreditation and what happens if Columbia University loses it?

The potential loss of accreditation raises unanswered questions and poses serious risks for Columbia – or any other higher education institution – as a high-stakes battle between the White House and colleges across the country escalates. Accreditation is required for federal student loan eligibility and Pell Grants, and its loss would have direct impacts on students and faculty. Here's what we know about what losing accreditation could mean for Columbia. The Department of Education announced Wednesday it had notified Columbia's accrediting agency – the Middle States Commission on Higher Education – of the school's alleged violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and said the school 'no longer appears to meet' the commission's accreditation standards. Accreditation decisions are made by federally recognized independent accrediting bodies through a lengthy process, but the new Department of Education statement adds significant pressure on Columbia. It's a peer-review process where schools and programs are evaluated to ensure they meet basic standards of quality, according to the Department of Education. Standards are set by accrediting agencies – private organizations that work with educational institutions to establish benchmarks. It's a critical system that determines which institutions can access billions of dollars in federal financial aid. In order to ensure 'a basic level of quality, the practice of accreditation arose in the United States as a means of conducting non-governmental, peer evaluation of educational institutions and programs,' the Department of Education's website says. If the institution or program meets the agency's standards, it earns accreditation and is listed in official publications. But it doesn't stop there. Accrediting agencies monitor schools and re-evaluate them periodically to ensure they continue to meet the required standards. Accreditation comes in two forms: institutional, for entire colleges, and specialized, for specific programs like law or nursing. Some accreditors also assess vocational institutions. The system helps identify quality schools, ease credit transfers, secure federal aid, and set professional licensing standards. The Council for Higher Education Accreditation ensures accrediting agencies uphold rigorous standards. The US has numerous accrediting agencies, but only those recognized by the Department of Education are considered reliable authorities on educational quality. The department currently recognizes dozens of accrediting agencies. Loss of accreditation could have sweeping consequences for Columbia students, rendering their academic credits ineligible for transfer and potentially disqualifying them from admission to many graduate programs, which typically require a degree from an accredited institution. And accreditation is required for federal student loans and Pell Grant eligibility. Columbia, in a statement, said Wednesday it is 'aware of the concerns raised' by the government and has 'addressed those concerns directly with Middle States.' 'Columbia is deeply committed to combatting antisemitism on our campus. We take this issue seriously and are continuing to work with the federal government to address it,' the university said. But the White House takes an entirely different view. 'After Hamas' October 7, 2023, terror attack on Israel, Columbia University's leadership acted with deliberate indifference towards the harassment of Jewish students on its campus,' US Secretary of Education Linda McMahon said Wednesday. 'We look forward to the Commission keeping the Department fully informed of actions taken to ensure Columbia's compliance with accreditation standards including compliance with federal civil rights laws,' McMahon said. The Middle States Commission on Higher Education, one of the nation's major accrediting agencies, serves as the accreditor for Columbia University. 'Everything done in the name of the institution, including all academic programs and services, falls within their scope of accreditation,' the commission's website reads. Columbia University was set to undergo an accreditation review by the commission during the 2024-25 academic year, according to the student newspaper Columbia Spectator. The university was previously accredited in 2015-16, with an earlier review in 2005-06. The process is crucial for maintaining access to federal student aid, including grants and loans, and serves as a measure of academic quality. The commission said it received a letter on the matter but does 'not have any other comment at this time.' Columbia has been gearing up for the review since early 2023 by forming a steering committee and six working groups tasked with addressing seven core accreditation standards, including governance, ethics, educational effectiveness and institutional improvement, the newspaper wrote. In September, the Office of the Vice Provost for Academic Programs released a 103-page draft self-study report outlining Columbia's compliance with accreditation benchmarks. 'It provides an opportunity for us to showcase the work that we're doing and our ongoing evolution as an institution,' Dana Palmer, senior associate provost for academic programs, told the student paper. 'What does student life look like outside of the classroom, looking at a very multidimensional perspective?' Schools have lost accreditation – or had it revoked and reinstated – in the past. In 2004, Barber-Scotia College, a historically Black institution founded by the Presbyterian Church, lost its accreditation and chose not to appeal, leaving its students ineligible for federal financial aid, according to the Church's news service. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools cited 'a fundamental issue of integrity,' including improperly awarded degrees, in its decision. Schools that fail to meet accreditation standards may be placed on probation, according to the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges. A few schools currently on probation include Cambridge Technical Institute in Puerto Rico, East West College of Natural Medicine in Florida, and American Trade School in Missouri. On April 23, President Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at overhauling the university accreditation process. The executive order accuses accreditors – independent bodies that regulate academic standards – of abusing their authority by prioritizing diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives over academic outcomes. That order singled out on its criticism the American Bar Association – which provides accreditation for Juris Doctor programs in the country – and the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, the only federally recognized body that accredits Doctor of Medicine degree programs in the US and Canada. The White House criticism set the tone for its take on higher education institutions. At the core of its offensive was the requirement of concrete actions to end diversity and inclusion programs for both student bodies and faculty. 'American students and taxpayers deserve better, and my Administration will reform our dysfunctional accreditation system so that colleges and universities focus on delivering high-quality academic programs at a reasonable price,' the April executive order stated. The Council of Regional Accrediting Commissions, which represents the seven largest accrediting entities, criticized Trump's order, saying it misrepresented the role of accreditors in higher education. 'Accrediting agencies are instrumental to promoting quality assurance and protecting student and taxpayer investments in higher education,' Heather Perfetti, the president of the organization, said, adding the council 'firmly rejects' the administration's characterization. The order makes it easier for universities to switch accreditors or for new accrediting institutions, while also directing the government to 'take appropriate action to terminate unlawful discrimination' in the accreditation process.

Tesla (TSLA) stock slumped again on Thursday as the fallout continued to emerge from the very public policy blowout between President Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk. "Call your Senator, Call your Congressman, Bankrupting America is NOT ok! KILL the BILL," Musk posted on X on Wednesday, continuing a stunning level of public backlash to Trump's massive tax-and-spending bill working its way through Congress. Trump responded to the Musk fracas in the Oval Office on Thursday. "I'm very disappointed, because Elon knew the inner workings of this bill better than almost anybody sitting here, better than you people," Trump said to reporters. "All of a sudden he had a problem, and he only developed the problem when he found out that we're going to have to have to cut the EV mandate." Trump's comments amounted to an extraordinary public rebuke of Musk, who went from Trump and Republican Party megadonor during the 2024 campaign to the head of the Trump-created governmental department with a mission to cut spending. "Elon and I had a great relationship. I don't know if we will anymore. I was surprised," Trump added. Musk tweeted in apparent response to Trump's comments: "Whatever." The Wall Street Journal also reported that the strain between the two was amplified by the White House's move to nix the nomination of Jared Isaacman for NASA administrator. Musk, a close ally of Isaacman, had advocated for him to get the job, sources told the Journal. Musk's barrage comes as the bill faces an uncertain future in the Senate, and a Congressional Budget Office estimation of its impact on the deficit adds fuel to Musk's line of argument. The nonpartisan office projected the House-passed version of the bill would add $2.4 trillion to deficits over the next 10 years. DOGE itself, once led by Musk, has been criticized for not producing the budgetary cuts Musk touted it could find—and the cuts it has produced have been deeply unpopular. Musk's ties to the Trump administration had been seen as a boon for his broader business interests, given SpaceX's close work with NASA and regulatory levers the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration could pull in getting autonomous driving rules in place for Tesla's robotaxi testing.
