Eagles Fan Tyler Sabapathy Dies After Horrific Accident While Celebrating Team's Super Bowl Berth

Yahoo29-01-2025

An 18-year-old Temple University student died Tuesday after falling from a light pole he climbed to celebrate the Philadelphia Eagles' Super Bowl-clinching playoff victory over the Washington Commanders.
The incident occurred as fans gathered at 15th and Market streets in Philadelphia on Sunday night, an ABC affiliate reported.
Tyler Sabapathy fell backward from the pole and hit his head on the concrete sidewalk, the station reported. He was rushed to a hospital with a brain injury and died there two days later.
A Philly NBC affiliate shared video of Sabapathy perched on the pole before his fall.
'The loss of a promising 18-year-old man like Tyler is both tragic and traumatic,' university president John Fry wrote in an open letter to the school. 'There are no words that can make sense of it, and the entire Temple community mourns his passing.'
The letter noted that Sabapathy, a native of Toronto, was a member of the gymnastics club team who majored in exercise and sports science. 'Tyler was fascinated with injury prevention, and this ultimately led him to pursue the major that he did. He no doubt had a bright future ahead of him, and it is so tragic that we will not be able to see how he would have made his mark on the world.'
There were other reports after the NFC Championship game of fans scaling poles ― somewhat of a tradition in the city.
During the last time the Eagles advanced to the Super Bowl in 2023, many revelers climbed poles and traffic lights despite authorities having them greased as a deterrent.
New Orleans police have warned Eagles fans not to shimmy up poles ahead of the team's Super Bowl clash against the Kansas City Chiefs on Feb. 9 in the Superdome. The practice is illegal and unsafe, the police said.

Analyst Calls Eagles Legitimate Target For Pro Bowl Cornerback

Analyst Calls Eagles Legitimate Target For Pro Bowl Cornerback originally appeared on Athlon Sports. There are many reasons why the Philadelphia Eagles continue to be tied to free-agent cornerback Jaire Alexander. After winning Super Bowl LIX, the organization parted ways with two key starters in the secondary, including cornerback Darius Slay and safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson. Advertisement With Alexander now a free agent after his release from the Green Bay Packers, the Pro Bowl cornerback is seen as a fit for the Eagles maybe in part if they don't believe in young Kelee Ringo. There is an underrated reason why Alexander is a strong fit with Philly, though. Eagles defensive backs coach Christian Parker was a quality control coach with the Packers during the 2019 and 2020 seasons. Alexander was an All-Pro during his second season with Parker. Philadelphia doesn't have much money to give out for Alexander this offseason, but one analyst believes something could happen that would turn the tide on a potential deal. Advertisement ESPN's Adam Schefter joined 97.5 The Fanatic and addressed the possibility while saying Alexander could be a fit if the price is right. "Now, Jaire Alexander, if the price were right and you're doing a one-year deal – whatever the number is, a low number – they can go make that work if that's what they wanted to do," Schefter said. Things can absolutely change if Alexander - who was a $20 million plus guy under his previous deal. lowers his price. That said, Philadelphia has supported Ringo in earning the starting job this season. With larger extensions due the following offseason, Philadelphia is trying to save as much cap space as possible for next year. Advertisement And we say - with all due respect to Schefter - that leaves Alexander as an unlikely fit for the team at this point. Eagles All-Pro Lineman Reaching New Heights Despite Age

Eagles All-Pro Lineman Reaching New Heights Despite Age originally appeared on Athlon Sports. It wasn't that long ago when Lane Johnson was the youngest offensive lineman on the Philadelphia Eagles. As the years went by, Johnson saw the departures of some of the players he had looked up to during his early years. Jason Peters, Evan Mathis, Brandon Brooks, and Jason Kelce have all come and gone. Advertisement Now, Johnson is the elder statesman of the room. Even if he doesn't feel like it. 'I'm 35 and I feel like I'm better than when I was 29, 30,' Johnson said. 'I had the surgeries, so the games I missed in (20)21, you can clearly see on film I was very hindered with my left foot. "Now, I feel like I'm getting close to maybe my peak. As weird as it is to say, that's truly how I feel.' Johnson has grown into one of the best right tackles in the sport and a borderline Hall-of-Fame talent. Over the years, he has helped develop excellent players as well. But as he ages, the Eagles aren't necessarily worried about his future retirement decision. After signing an extension this offseason, the All-Pro clarified that he wanted to play for at least another two years. Advertisement That means Philadelphia will have an older player who is still performing at an elite level for the next couple of seasons. Johnson feels better than he did when he was even in his prime, which is staggering. … Although it isn't quite surprising at this rate. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Cincinnati Bengals and Joe Burrow are looking to bounce back from their disappointing 2024 season with a much stronger 2025 campaign. Burrow and company finished last season with a 9-8 record, narrowly missing out on a spot in the playoffs. After coming up just short last season, the Bengals are highly motivated to come out and play a much better year. While the team did not make the playoffs, Burrow had a career season. He was an MVP candidate, but that isn't good enough for him. Joe Burrow #9 of the Cincinnati Bengals jogs off the field after beating the Minnesota Vikings 27-24 in overtime of the Cincinnati Bengals against the Minnesota Vikings at Paul Brown Stadium on September 12, 2021 in Cincinnati, Ohio. More Photo byThroughout the course of the 2024 NFL season, Burrow completed 70.6 percent of his pass attempts for 4,918 yards, 43 touchdowns, and nine interceptions in 17 games. He's looking to build off of that and do even more in 2025. Read more: Chiefs Star Travis Kelce Has Made Huge Physical Change Dan Hoard, the voice of the team, shared a message that Burrow sent out about his goals for the upcoming season. "There's room to improve in every area," Burrow said. "Movement, accuracy, spin rate, bigger, faster, stronger – all of those good things." Simply thinking about Burrow improving every aspect of his game is a scary thought for opposing defenses. He's already one of the best in the business and an MVP candidate. If he's able to make the kind of leap that he's targeting, Cincinnati might just be a Super Bowl contending team. At 28 years old, Burrow has put up impressive numbers throughout his five-year NFL career. He has thrown for 19,001 yards, 140 touchdowns, and 46 interceptions, while completing 68.6 percent of his passes in 69 games. Those numbers have come despite two seasons with major injury issues. There is no other way to view this than as a warning to the rest of the NFL. Burrow is targeting his best season yet and he's confident that he can reach his goals. Read more: Vikings QB JJ McCarthy Called Out in Brutally Honest Breakdown During the offseason, the Bengals also were able to lock up his two best weapons. Both Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins were given lucrative contract extensions. Once again, Cincinnati is going to have one of the most talented offenses in the NFL. If Burrow takes his game to the next level, the Bengals are going to be very difficult to stop. That could help them compete at the top of the AFC. He will still need to prove it on the field, but this comment from Burrow should excite the Cincinnati fan base. For more Cincinnati Bengals and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.
