Big-name anchors going independent, making money in the Substack era
Hamish McKenzie, the co-founder of Substack, is suddenly speaking out.
"We are living through the most significant media disruption since the printing press, and it explains everything from why you can't stand your neighbor to our current political tumult."
Today, he says on his site, "we live in a more chaotic environment, where the narrative frenzy of social media has given rise to political movements that gain power through exploiting attention of any kind, positive or negative, from moral panics to fulminating podium-thumpers. We've gone from 'Ask not what your country can do for you' to dunk tweets and death-by-emoji."

Obviously, it's in McKenzie's interest to portray a media revolution with him as the chief rebel. When Substack launched in 2017, it was viewed as an intriguing experiment, an outlet largely for those who didn't have one.
But in the Trump era, with his constant cable appearances and Truth Social posts, there's little question that we're submerged in a toxic environment. The president gets this, which is why he's done a number of podcast interviews.

He went on Joe Rogan and Kamala, uh, did not.
Now, with big-name journalists giving up prime television gigs in favor of the site's independence, we are living in the Substack Era. What was once viewed as the Holy Grail – an anchoring or hosting job on a major network – is now dismissed as old-school legacy media with too many corporate constraints.
Take my former Fox colleague Chris Wallace. He left for CNN (actually CNN-plus, which was euthanized in three weeks) and then launched a Saturday talk show. But Chris recently announced he's leaving the network to go independent, which undoubtedly includes Substack.
Another ex-Fox colleague, Megyn Kelly, had a similar experience. Having been dropped by NBC after a bad experience there, she started a daily show and video podcast on Sirius XM, and now has 3.2 million subscribers on YouTube.

Chuck Todd, having been eased out of his "Meet the Press" job, was given an online streaming show. But not long ago he announced he was leaving NBC to go independent.
When Dan Abrams gave up his NewsNation show after three years, he said: "As much as I love this show and the mission of this network, I just can't continue to give this show the attention it needs and deserves with all of my other professional commitments." The Mediaite founder later announced that he is concentrating on creating a YouTube channel for the site, working with other media folks.
McKenzie's great insight is that he could connect writers and podcasters directly to their audience, with Substack taking a cut. They can opt for a revenue-sharing agreement. Now you might ask, what if you're not a famous former anchor or commentator?
Turns out that niche sites do really well. They can work at other jobs at the same time. Many users report a six-figure income.
This is especially striking in that most Substack people let you read their sites for free, or a shortened version, with the full column and special features available only for paying subscribers. The hope is that some of the freeloaders will become subscribers over time.
Not everyone winds up at Substack voluntarily. Chris Cillizza, the former Washington Post columnist, is quite candid in saying he came to Substack after being laid off at CNN. He found himself with little to do after dropping the kids at school.

"I started this Substack — selfishly — to help me grapple with my changed life. To give me a platform where I could express myself — hopefully to an audience — about the world of politics, yes, but also how I was navigating a new reality."
He has slowly built a following and chats with Todd once a week, which is something that Substackers do.
Casandra Campbell of Really Good Business Ideas analyzed the 29 most popular Substacks.
The first two are Letters from an American (hundreds of thousands of paid subscribers for political history) and Broken Palate. Michael Moore was No. 3, and the only other names I recognized were former candidate Allen West, the Bulwark, and ex-Labor Secretary Robert Reich.
The others had names like Dr. Mercola's Censored Library, DeLa Soul, The Pragmatic Engineer and The Cryptonite Weekly Rap.
"Our political culture now mirrors chaos media culture," McKenzie says. "Opponents are not just to be argued against, but humiliated." Good luck changing that.

Look, I subscribe to several Substack accounts. I'd like to subscribe to more but, with fees ranging from $5 to $40 a month, it gets expensive. So I read others for free and ponder whether to upgrade.
I don't agree that this is the biggest deal since the Gutenberg press, around 1440, but it's having an impact on the media and political culture. Search Broadens as Investigators Race to Track Down Minnesota Suspect

Investigators expanded their search across Minnesota on Sunday as they raced to track the footsteps of a man suspected of assassinating a Democratic state lawmaker and trying to kill a second. Police found what they believe is a vehicle belonging to the suspect, Vance Boelter, 57, in Sibley County, near a listed address for him and about an hour's drive southwest of where Saturday's shootings occurred. Officials have pleaded for help from the public, offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to Boelter's arrest. At the same time they urged caution, saying that he was believed to be armed, dangerous and willing to kill. "He is someone that no one should mess with, except for law enforcement," Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota said Sunday morning on NBC's "Meet the Press." Communities were on edge around the Minneapolis suburbs where authorities say the suspect went to the homes of two lawmakers early Saturday, pretending to be a police officer. Wearing a ballistic vest, gloves and an identity-disguising mask, investigators say he killed Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark. The police almost caught the suspect at the home, but he escaped on foot after exchanging gunfire with officers. State Sen. John A. Hoffman, a fellow Democrat, and his wife, Yvette, were also shot in a separate attack but survived. Klobuchar said Sunday that the couple was "hanging in there." Hoffman, she said, "may face some additional surgeries, but he is also in stable condition right now, from what I know." Investigators have been examining surveillance footage, bank records, Boelter's associations and his movements from before the shootings. He had been politically engaged: A friend said he opposed abortion and had supported President Donald Trump, and he previously served on a state workforce development board alongside Hoffman. Here's what else we know: -- The victims: Hortman served as speaker of the Minnesota House for a six-year period that ended this year and helped pass several key policies on abortion rights, marijuana legalization and medical leave. Hoffman is a fourth-term state senator from Champlin, another Minneapolis suburb, and leads the Senate's Human Services Committee. -- The suspect: Boelter and his wife run a private security company that promotes the usage of SUVs similar to those used by police departments, according to its website. President Donald Trump, who champions an "America First" ideology and policy approach, touted his ability to cool international conflicts and cited several high-profile agreements and diplomatic breakthroughs he made across both of his presidencies in a Truth Social post on Sunday. What To Know While Trump has only been back in office for about five months, his first term was marked by involvement in several international agreements. Although the second Trump administration has been involved in talks with Iran, no formal diplomacy has come out of it. The conversations follow years of strained, distrusting relations between the U.S. and Iran, which intensified after Trump withdrew from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) during his first term. The U.S. is Israel's closest ally, providing billions of dollars in military aid annually. In the most recent escalation, U.S. missile defense systems helped intercept retaliatory missiles from Tehran to Israel. Israeli strikes in Iran have killed over 400 people, according to the AP. In his Sunday post, Trump pointed to several international conflicts in which he claims to have played a key role in resolving, such as that he brought "peace" to the long-running dispute between Egypt and Ethiopia over a massive dam on the Nile River, a vital water and energy source for the region. The Kosovo War ended in 1999, but tensions between Kosovo and Serbia remained tense and instable for the following decades. Serbia does not recognize Kosovo as a separate state, which declared its independence in 2008. Trump wrote in a Saturday social media post that the U.S. "had not nothing to do with the attack on Iran, tonight." Iran has said it believes the U.S. is involved. Israeli officials have reportedly asked the Trump administration to join in on efforts to attack Iran, with Iran's nuclear program having long been a focal point of U.S. and Israeli concern. Tehran insists its efforts are solely for energy purposes. Trump talked to ABC News' Rachel Scott on Sunday about the matter, saying, "We're not involved in it. It's possible we could get involved. But we are not at this moment involved." Meanwhile, Israel struck Tehran again on Sunday, raising the death toll to over 400. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Sunday that if Israel continues to strike across Iran, the Islamic republic would launch "more painful and crushing responses," according to the government-linked Mehr news agency.

Rand Paul: ‘I've never liked the idea of' Trump Army parade
Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) said he 'never liked the idea' of President Trump's military parade, saying while he believes the president 'means well,' but the military parades he remembers growing up were Soviet or North Korean. 'I just never liked the idea of the parade because I grew up in the '70s and '80s and the only parades I can remember are Soviet parades for the most part or North Korean parades,' Paul said when asked about the parade on NBC's 'Meet The Press' on Sunday. 'And the parades I remember from our history were different.' Paul mentioned that previous U.S. military parades were 'rejoicing the end of war' and 'our soldiers coming home,' which 'absolutely ought to be commemorated and discussed every year' through Memorial Day and Veterans Day. 'But we never glorified weapons so much,' he added. 'And I know he means well. I don't think he means for any of this to be depicted in another fashion. But I'm just not a big fan.' The parade celebrating the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army also fell on Trump's 79th birthday and featured military vehicles and members of the Army marching down Constitution Avenue. Many critics of the parade, including Paul, highlighted the cost of the parade, which reached upwards of $45 million. 'I mean, we're $2 trillion in the hole and just an additional cost like this, I'm not for it,' he said.
