Biker, 25, killed in four-vehicle crash near Tangkak
TANGKAK: A 25-year-old man was killed in a four-vehicle crash at KM12, Lebuh AMJ Kesang, Sungai Mati, near here on Monday (June 2).
Tangkak police chief Supt Roslan Mohd Talib said police received a report of the accident at about 2.12am.
"Initial investigations found that the accident occurred when a motorcyclist, who was on his way from Melaka to Muar, is believed to have lost control of his machine before crashing into the rear of a pick-up truck parked on the road shoulder.
"The motorcyclist fell and was then hit by a sedan car coming from behind. At the same time, a sports utility vehicle (SUV), also coming from the same direction, crashed into the victim's motorcycle that was on the road," he said in a statement Monday.
The victim died at the scene and the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
Those with information regarding the incident have been urged to contact investigating officer Insp Khairul Azmi Ibrahim at 011-12445836.
Police also advised the public not to park their vehicles on road shoulders to avoid the risk of accidents, warning that stern action will be taken against offenders. - Bernama

555 inmates released on licence ahead of Aidiladha under Ihsan Madani programme
KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 555 inmates nationwide were released today under the Ihsan Madani Licensed Prissoner Release Programme (PBSL) in conjunction with the upcoming Aidiladha celebration. In a statement yesterday, the Malaysian Prisons Department said that the initiative aims to provide eligible inmates with the opportunity to reunite with their families and reintegrate into society, in line with national rehabilitation and social reintegration efforts. Johor recorded the highest number of releases with 83 inmates, followed by Sabah (82), Sarawak (68), Terengganu (67), Pahang (54), Selangor (51), Penang (45), Kedah (28), Perak and Negeri Sembilan (25 each), Perlis (15) and Kelantan (12). "The programme is carried out in conjunction with national festive celebrations to support the rehabilitation process and encourage the successful reintegration of eligible prospects into society," the department said. Including previous releases granted during Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Kaamatan and Gawai, a total of 1,934 inmates have benefited from PBSL so far this year. Between 2020 and 2024, a total of 57,779 inmates were released under the scheme, with 2024 marking the highest annual figure at 20,578, followed by 2023 (15,180), 2022 (8,412), 2021 (3,517) and 2020 (1,938). PBSL is available to inmates serving prison sentences of under three years, as well as to vulnerable groups and pregnant women serving terms of less than four years. To qualify, inmates must have completed rehabilitation programmes, demonstrated good behaviour and secured a suitable guarantor. – BERNAMA

Naimah to challenge MACC's freezing order on overseas assets

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: Naimah Khalid, the widow of former finance minister Daim Zainuddin, will challenge the court order obtained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to freeze RM758 million worth of assets abroad linked to her and her family. Naimah claimed that the assets were lawfully acquired and that her lawyers would immediately move to set aside the freezing order, which was granted ex parte. 'I will challenge this order to defend what should never be taken from any of us: our rights, our voice, and a country governed by law, not by fear. 'Let there be no doubt that I will fight this politically motivated, reckless, vindictive and lawless action, through all legal means at my disposal,' she said in a statement today. She argued that no reasonable person would say the order was in accordance with fairness or the rules of natural justice, accusing MACC of obtaining it by ambush. The Kuala Lumpur High Court reportedly granted MACC's application to freeze £132 million (RM758.2 million) worth of assets in London belonging to Naimah and her family. The assets include two commercial buildings, five luxury residences, and one bank account, Utusan Malaysia reported. Naimah alleged that the move was part of a 'long and continuous smear campaign' against her family by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki since late 2022. 'No crime of any kind has ever been proven against Daim. No charges were brought in his lifetime, and none after his death,' she said, adding that the Anti-Money Laundering Act cited by MACC required a serious offence to be proven first. She warned that failure to push back against such actions would embolden those in power to act with impunity. 'A line has been crossed. And if we do not resist, there may soon be no lines left at all. Then no Malaysian will be safe from the reach of unchecked power,' she said. Daim was charged in January last year with failing to declare assets to MACC, including interests in 38 companies, 19 land plots in five states, six properties, two unit trust accounts and seven luxury vehicles. MACC said he had asked for five deadline extensions but still failed to comply. After Daim's death on Nov 13 last year, the prosecution withdrew the charges, and the court granted an order discharging and acquitting him. Naimah also faces an asset declaration charge. Police arrest Tangkak man for slashing wife, investigations ongoing
TANGKAK, June 4 — Police have confirmed that a man slashed a woman believed to be his wife in Bukit Gambir Monday. Tangkak district police chief Supt Roslan Mohd Talib said further investigations into the incident were still ongoing. 'The suspect has been arrested this morning and will be taken for remand application at the Tangkak Magistrate's Court today,' he said when contacted yesterday.
