Ange Postecoglou brushed aside his all-out attacking principles and went deep and direct when it really mattered to end Tottenham's trophy drought: THE SHARPE END

Daily Mail22-05-2025

It's just who we are, mate.' Ever since Ange Postecoglou pushed his nine remaining Tottenham players up to the halfway line against Chelsea two years ago, he's seemed bound to his all-out attacking principles.
Only it wasn't who they were when it mattered most in Bilbao as Postecoglou's side dropped deep and went direct to beat Manchester United and end their 17-year wait for a trophy.
Spurs mustered three shots against United, had only 28 per cent possession and completed just 115 passes, all the lowest figures statisticians Opta have on record for a team in a major European final since 2009-10.
How different to usual 'Ange-ball'.
Spurs average 55 per possession in the league this season and they usually complete 414 passes, behind only the other Big Six sides. The 115 Spurs managed in Bilbao is less than half as many as even Nottingham Forest. Even Forest average 40 per cent possession.
Without James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski, Postecoglou went direct. In the infamous 6-3 home defeat to Liverpool in December, a game after which he insisted again he would not change his approach, Spurs went long with just seven per cent of their passes. About one in every 14 passes. Against United, it was 22 per cent – just under one in five.
Against Liverpool, Spurs completed 85 per cent of their passes. In Bilbao, they completed less than two thirds.
Tottenham bypassed the midfield against United. Rodrigo Bentancur and Pape Sarr touched the ball the same number of times as United keeper Andre Onana. Full-backs Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie combined for more than a quarter of the team's total touches.
The average position maps from both games show how, even in a thrilling defeat, Spurs pushed high up the pitch. Against United, their front line barely got out of their own half.
And once they were in front, they held on for dear life. Tottenham had just one touch in the United box during the second half.
It was Tottenham, but not as we know it. But, in the end, it worked.

Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce ‘make official transfer bid for Man City and England star Kyle Walker in shock swoop'

FENERBAHCE have reportedly made a shock swoop for Kyle Walker. The Manchester City defender spent the second half of last season on loan with AC Milan after informing the club he wants to move on to pastures new. 3 3 Walker, 35, is now in limbo after Milan rejected the opportunity to permanently acquire his services. But according to reports, Fenerbahce, who are managed by Jose Mourinho, are looking to snap him up. That's according to Turkish reporter Yagız Sabuncuoglu, who claims last season's Super Lig runners-up have tabled an offer for the England international. He wrote on X: "Fenerbahce made an official offer for Manchester City's Kyle Walker." City chief Guardiola has appeared to send Walker a clear message over his future by leaving him out of his squad for the Club World Cup. The former Sheffield United and Tottenham star is now seemingly on course to leave the Etihad after eight trophy-laden seasons. According to Guardiola, Walker asked to leave Eastlands after City's historic treble-winning 2022/23 season. The Spaniard said: "Kyle asked to explore the option to play abroad. Kyle Walker lifts lid on awkward England WhatsApp group that snubbed players are forced to mute "We cannot understand the success that the club had these years without Kyle. It is impossible. "He has been our right-back and given us something we didn't have. He's been amazing. "But now in his mind, for many reasons, he would like to explore if he can go to another country to play his last years."

Tottenham sue Sir Jim Ratcliffe's Ineos

Tottenham Hotspur have taken High Court legal action against Sir Jim Ratcliffe's Ineos. In a commercial listing under 'general commercial contracts and arrangements', Tottenham have lodged a claim against Ineos Automotive Limited, which is a subsidiary of the multinational Ineos company that co-owns Manchester United. Spurs and Ineos had announced a multi-million pound five-year deal in December 2022 to promote the Ineos Grenadier car as the club's 'official 4x4 vehicle partner'. However, talks have been ongoing since at least February over Ineos withdrawing two years before the expiry of the deal. Those negotiations appear to have failed to find an agreement, with the Tottenham claim lodged on June 12, less than a month after they beat Manchester United in the Europa League final to secure a place in the Champions League. Spurs and Ineos have been in partnership since 2020, when the petrochemicals company was named as the club's 'official hand sanitiser supplier' during the pandemic. Ineos, however, have been cutting ties with a number of leading sports organisations in recent months, notably Sir Ben Ainslie's sailing team and the All Blacks rugby union team. Telegraph Sport revealed in February that New Zealand Rugby was also taking legal action against Ineos for an alleged breach of contract after a six-year deal to 2027 ended early, although an agreement has since been reached. Ineos has said that it is being forced into cost-cutting by Europe's 'extreme' green carbon taxes and has issued warnings over what it called the 'deindustrialisation' of the continent. Ratcliffe also blamed energy prices and carbon taxes earlier this year for forcing the closure of Ineos's synthetic ethanol plant at Grangemouth in Scotland, resulting in the loss of 80 direct roles and an estimated 500 indirect jobs. Significant financial measures have already been introduced at Manchester United since Ratcliffe bought a 27.7 per cent minority stake in December 2023, including increased ticket prices and the loss of hundreds of staff. Upon the announcement of the Grenadier deal in 2022, Spurs had said: 'Our partnership with Ineos Grenadier represents the coming together of an innovative British brand with an iconic London football club – both of whom are committed to pushing boundaries and daring to do things differently, while staying true to authentic values and traditions.' In a statement, Ineos told Telegraph Sport that it had exercised 'a contractual right to terminate' its partnership with Tottenham last December. 'Ineos Automotive has been a partner of Tottenham Hotspur since 2022, taking on a partnership agreement that Ineos Group had in place with the club since 2020,' said a spokesperson. 'Like any business, we have to be diligent in how we operate and where we invest marketing budgets. It's completely normal for partnerships to be reviewed on a regular basis, and we've decided that the partnership wasn't working out for us. We have the right to terminate the partnership.'
