Japan's Weather Agency Declares Flowering of Tokyo's Cherry Blossoms as the Festive Season Begins
Japan 's official cherry blossom spotters on Monday confirmed the first blooming of the country's favorite flower, declaring the official start of the festive season in the Japanese capital.
An official from the Japan Meteorological Agency carefully examined the specimen tree of Somei Yoshino variety at Tokyo's Yasukuni shrine and announced that more than five blossoms — the minimum required for the announcement — were flowering on it.
The opening matched the average year and was five days earlier than last year, according to the JMA.
Cherry blossoms, or 'sakura,' are Japan's favorite flower and usually reach their peak in late March to early April, just as the country celebrates the start of a new school and business year. Many Japanese enjoy walking or picnicking under the trees.
Sakura have deeply influenced Japanese culture for centuries and have regularly been used in poetry and literature, with their fragility seen as a symbol of life, death and rebirth.
The announcement in Tokyo, which is enjoying warmer-than-usual temperatures of around 19 Celsius (66 Fahrenheit), comes just one day after the blooming of the nation's first cherry blossom was confirmed Sunday in the southwestern city of Kochi on the island of Shikoku.
The JMA tracks more than 50 'benchmark' cherry trees across the country. The trees normally bloom for about two weeks each year from first bud to all the blossoms falling off. They are expected to reach their peak in about 10 days.
Cherry trees are sensitive to temperature changes and the timing of their blooming can provide valuable data for climate change studies.
In recent years, Japan's cherry blossom season has tended to come earlier than the average, prompting concerns of a possible impact of climate change.

Saudi Gazette report MAKKAH — Saleh Al-Zuwaid, spokesman for the Hajj Transport and Logistics System, said that a total of 62 air carriers operated as many as 3,314 Hajj flights carrying pilgrims from 238 destinations in 71 countries around the world. The number of trips between King Abdulaziz International Airport Station and Makkah has also been increased by 75percent compared to last year, reaching an average of approximately one trip per hour. He noted that 700,000 passengers had been transported on the Haramain High Speed Rail by Sunday, stressing that it will continue to provide services to pilgrims to meet their expectations. Regarding the Mashaer Train, the spokesperson confirmed that more than 2000 trips are expected to operate this season to transport more than 2 million passengers in 7 days. Al-Zuwaid explained that the use of road cooling technology in the holy sites has expanded by 82 percent compared to last year. "This technology has proven effective in reducing road surface temperatures by 12 degrees Celsius, especially in areas surrounding the Namirah Mosque and the holy sites," he added. For his part, Saad Al-Shanbari, spokesperson for the Hajj Communications and Technology System, stated that 4G and 5G coverage in Makkah, Madinah, and the holy sites reached 99 percent, resulting in a significant increase in internet speed, reaching 264 megabits per second, a 10 percent increase over last year. "Internet speed in Makkah and Madinah alone this year reached 336 megabits per second, a 19 percent increase over last year," he said. Al-Shanbari noted that Wi-Fi access points in Makkah, the holy sites, and Madinah reached more than 10,000 during this year's Hajj, in partnership with telecommunications service providers. He also emphasized that the Communications and Space Technology Commission (CSTC) was able to utilize the latest innovations during this season, successfully implementing, in partnership with Aramco, an artificial intelligence (AI) crowd management experiment using HAI surveillance cameras.

Hajj 2025: Hot to Extremely Hot Weather Expected at Holy Sites
As Wednesday May 28, 2025 marked the first day of Dhu'al-Hijjah, the Hajj season for this year will take place during the first ten days of June 2025. In the light of this, the Saudi National Center of Meteorology (NCM) announced its weather forecast for the Hajj season. In a press conference, the NCM's Chief Executive, Ayman Ghulam, said that the expected weather conditions at the Holy Sites will be hot to extremely hot. According to Ghulam, the maximum temperatures in the Holy Sites during Hajj are forecast to range between 40 and 47 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, the minimum temperatures will range between 27 and 32 degree Celsius. Moreover, the humidity levels could reach up to 60%. The Holy Sites are likely to experience northerly to northwesterly winds at speeds ranging from 25 km/h to 35 km/h. These winds may stir up dust and reduce visibility, particularly in open areas and highways, he noted. Additionally, the NCM's Chief Executive pointed to the possibility of thunderclouds formation in the highlands of Taif. Their impact could extend to the Holy Sites from Dhu'al-Hijjah 8-13, bringing strong downwinds that raise dust and dirt. The prolonged exposure to high temperatures could lead to heat exhaustion, which may develop in some conditions to heatstroke. Many pilgrims experience heat exhaustion or heatstroke due to exposure to the sun for a long period of time.
