Carro CEO Aaron Tan wants ‘007' staff who can make themselves redundant through AI

Carro was founded as a tech startup with the idea of selling used cars on its platform without a middleman. Its ethos is in contrast to established tech giants such as Meta or Google, which means less largesse in the form of unlimited parental leave or personal project time.
'I don't subscribe to this Silicon Valley kool-aid stuff. I'd say I'm a bit of a Chinese towkay-style boss…old-school in expectations, but modern in trust. I don't micromanage, I'm not breathing down your neck. But I expect you to work hard when it matters – 007, not 996. I'm all about results, ownership, and stepping up when the heat is on,' he said.
'996' refers to working from 9 am to 9 pm, six days a week, while '007' is being available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Both terms spring from China's hyper-competitive tech sector.
007 is a 'baseline' more than a hard rule, he adds, a criterion for weeding out those who are not committed, which benefits the company in the long run.
'As a startup, you cannot carry deadweight. It's super important not to. We want people who want to prove themselves, people who want to be No 1 or win. When you bring such people in, naturally, everybody's level goes up.'
Tan admits that his expectation of constant availability has also led to what he describes as some 'cardinal mistakes', such as calling his financial controller while the latter was on honeymoon.
'I honestly didn't know he was away,' he said with a laugh. 'But the idea is to be available as and when needed.'
Intelligent agents
While the company is adopting more AI and automation, Tan said that it is less about making humans redundant and more about using those technologies for maximum impact.
'I would much rather bring someone that can think about how to use AI effectively in any organisation…if you can make yourself redundant, you can make others redundant and automate more. Make the humans more productive, let them do the high level stuff and leave the mundane **** behind.'
That is because Carro has ramped up the application of AI and it has helped its bottom line 'significantly', said Tan.
For example, 80 per cent of its customer service in Hong Kong is now fully AI-driven and it has also been implemented to help car salesmen deal with customer queries.
Spending less time on things that can be handled by AI, such as car recommendations or vehicle pricing, gives them more time for tasks which humans are better at, such as negotiation.
But another major value-add is in giving insights to inform the company's next steps.
'AI can go through millions of call logs and make sense of the data….it can tell you exactly what you want to know. From an optimisation standpoint, this is amazing and something that we didn't have up until one and a half years ago. It has transformed the way we look at locations and procurement, for example.'
Instead of choosing the next location based on population or potential market size, Carro analysed call logs from its customer service representatives to find the optimal place instead.
That grounded, data-driven approach comes from Tan's background: he has a degree from Singapore Management University's School of Information Systems and a master's degree from the Carnegie Mellon University School of Computer Science.
'I need the data in front of me, and then we will make an educated decision based on the data that we have. That drives the company.'
Trust fund
Most of his daily work is speaking to investors, at public engagements and the media, company updates, plus board meetings.
Tan is on the boards of more than 40 entities, including the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) and National Library Board (NLB).
Despite that, he does not find the duties overwhelming and values the breadth of experience.
'With SUSS, I have learned so much about running a university and even managing an endowment fund, (with NLB) I learned a lot about running and managing physical properties and engaging with the public…these are things I cannot learn just from running Carro.'
Tan said that the high level of trust he has in his management team makes this possible.
'I have a very good team of minus ones. The company is self-managed by about 40-50 of them…they are effective in helping me keep my sanity,' he said.
That ties back to his management style: While he demands much from his employees, he also gives them trust in return.
'If you do your part, I'll always have your back. It's tough love – with a lot of trust baked in.'

'We're going to be sending letters out in about a week and a half, two weeks, to countries, telling them what the deal is,' Mr Trump told reporters on June 11 at the John F. Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts in Washington where he was attending a performance. 'At a certain point, we're just going to send letters out. And I think you understand that, saying this is the deal, you can take it or leave it,' he added. It is unclear if Mr Trump will follow through with his pledge. The president has often set two-week deadlines for actions, only for them to come later or not at all. The president on May 16 said he would be setting tariff rates for US trading partners 'over the next two to three weeks'. Mr Trump in April announced higher tariffs on dozens of trading partners only to pause them for 90 days as markets swooned and investors feared the levies would spark a global downturn. Yet despite the ongoing negotiations, the only trade framework the US has reached is with the UK, along with a tariff truce with China. But even the truce with China was threatened after Washington and Beijing accused each other or reneging on the terms, leading to marathon talks earlier this week in London on how to implement their agreement. Mr Trump earlier said on June 11 that the trade framework with China had been completed and would have Beijing supply rare earths and magnets, with the US allowing Chinese students to study at American colleges and universities. Asked on June 11 at the performance if he would extend the deadline for nations to cut deals with his administration before higher levies take effect, Mr Trump said he would be open to it. 'But I don't think we're gonna have that necessity,' he added. Mr Trump had initially suggested he would engage in talks with each partner but has moved away from that idea, prioritising talks with some key economic partners and acknowledging that the administration lacks the capacity to negotiate dozens of individual deals. Mr Trump's team is also working to secure bilateral deals with India, Japan, South Korea as well as the European Union. PHOTO: AFP San Francisco – Meta Platforms has poached top engineers from multiple tech firms, including Alphabet's Google, for a new team focused on achieving a more advanced form of AI called artificial general intelligence. Jack Rae, a principal researcher at Google DeepMind, is expected to join Meta's 'superintelligence' team, according to multiple people familiar with the matter. Meta has also recruited Johan Schalkwyk, a machine learning lead at AI voice start-up Sesame AI, other people said. Alexandr Wang, co-founder and chief executive officer of Scale AI, is also expected to be part of the team after Meta finalises a multibillion-dollar investment in the data labelling start-up that could be announced as soon as this week. The new group is part of an ambitious, and costly, effort by Meta chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg to gain ground on rivals like Google and OpenAI after he was frustrated by the poor reception to the company's latest AI offering, Llama 4. Mr Zuckerberg hopes the new hires can help improve Llama's models and build better AI tools for voice and personalisation features. Meta and Mr Zuckerberg are offering compensation packages worth tens of millions of dollars over several years, including equity, according to people familiar with the matter. A spokesperson for Meta declined to comment. Mr Rae confirmed he's leaving Google for Meta, but declined to comment further. Mr Schalkwyk did not respond to a request for comment. Mr Zuckerberg has begun recruiting a brain trust of AI researchers and engineers, at times meeting with candidates at his homes in Lake Tahoe and Palo Alto, California, Bloomberg News first reported. Often, the CEO has reached out to potential hires directly, according to people familiar with the process. Meta aims to hire around 50 people for the new team, including a chief scientist to help oversee the group, one person said. The team is coming together as Meta is also nearing a deal to invest billions of dollars in Scale to bolster its AI efforts. Scale uses an army of contractors to label the data that tech firms such as Meta and OpenAI need to train and improve their AI models. Mr Wang, Scale's 28-year-old CEO, is an influential figure in the industry who has cultivated close ties with some in Washington. Other employees from Scale are likely to join Meta's superintelligence team after the investment is finalised, one person familiar with the deal said. Scale is considering appointing Jason Droege, its chief strategy officer, as CEO after the deal closes, according to people familiar with the matter. 'There are very few people globally who can do those type of large AI trainings very, very efficiently,' said Vahan Petrosyan, co-founder of SuperAnnotate, an AI data platform. For that reason, he said, higher pay packages may make sense for companies like Meta. Still, not everyone is jumping at Mr Zuckerberg's recruitment push. Meta unsuccessfully tried to poach Koray Kavukcuoglu, one of Google's top AI researchers, as well as Noam Brown, a leading researcher at OpenAI, according to a person familiar with the effort. Meanwhile, some of Meta's competitors appear to be offering new incentives for their AI researchers to stay. Google named Mr Kavukcuoglu as its chief AI architect – a new senior vice president role that reports directly to CEO Sundar Pichai, according to an internal memo obtained by Bloomberg News. Mr Kavukcuoglu will continue to serve as the generative AI unit lead and chief technology officer of Google DeepMind, Mr Pichai said in the memo. Brazil's top court votes to hold social media platforms accountable for user posts

BRASILIA :Brazil's Supreme Court on Wednesday ruled that social media companies must be held accountable for some types of content published by users on their platforms in the country, but details on the decision have yet to be resolved. Six of the 11 Supreme Court judges voted to hold platforms responsible for third-party content seen as illegal, in a decision that could result in fines against social media companies for not removing some users' posts in the country. The decision could impact the business of platforms including Meta's Facebook and Instagram, as well as TikTok, Elon Musk's X and other internet giants, such as Alphabet's Google, in a market of more than 200 million people. Only one justice so far voted to not change the current law on the matter, which says that the companies can only be found responsible for third-party content on their platforms if the firms do not comply with a legal decision ordering the content removal. Writing for the majority, Justice Gilmar Mendes said current Brazilian law represents "a veil of irresponsibility for digital platforms." "Even if they are informed of the occurrence of crimes on their platforms, they (currently) cannot be held responsible for damages caused by keeping this content online, except in the case of a court order," he said. Asked to comment, Meta sent a 2024 statement where it had said that a decision holding platforms responsible could make them "liable for virtually all types of content even without having been notified." In a statement sent before the vote which gave the court a majority, Google said the current Brazilian law regarding social media can and should be improved, "as long as procedure guarantees and criteria are set to prevent legal uncertainty and the indiscriminate content removal." TikTok and a representative of X in Brazil did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The court did not agree on the scope of the decision, such as what types of content would be considered illegal. The court's head, Luis Roberto Barroso, said he will work with the court members to find a consensus. Four judges still need to vote in the trial, which has been rolling over for months. Votes previously cast can still be changed, although that is not common. The trial is set to resume on Thursday.
