Gill has a chance to build a collective culture in new-look Indian team, says Chopra
New Delhi: Former India opener Aakash Chopra believes Shubman Gill has the opportunity to cultivate a strong collective culture as the captain of the Test team, which is all set to step into a new era through the five-match Test tour of England, starting on June 20. Under the leadership of Gill, the Test series in England will be India's first assignment in the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle. 'Form a leadership group—bring 4–5 players together and build a core. Include Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Siraj. Create a pack of wolves. These are the guys who'll be with you today, in six months, and five years down the line.' 'With a young team, it's important that the captain grows with the group. Seniors and juniors often have different routines and circles—but with this new-look team, you have a chance to build a collective culture. It's a rare opportunity to create a bond and a story that the entire nation will be proud of,' said Chopra on JioHotstar. Asked if Gill should draw inspiration from the success Virat Kohli had in his Test career, Chopra said, 'You can take inspiration from Virat Kohli's success, his hunger for runs, his leadership—but not necessarily his batting number. That's a very individual choice. Similarly, Shubman should play where he contributes best.' 'Batting position isn't about copying someone—it's about where you fit in the team and how it benefits the side. Learn from Kohli's mindset, play with an extra bowler if needed. That's what leaders do—make sacrifices for the team.' Chopra reflected on the pressure the Gill-led Indian team and support staff headed by Gautam Gambhir will face in England, adding that they need to select the bowlers who are sure of picking 20 wickets collectively. 'There should be pressure, and it's part of the job. When you're representing India and carrying the hopes of 1.4 billion people, it comes with immense love—even from people who've never seen you but still pray for your success. But with that comes responsibility, and with responsibility comes pressure.' 'I agree with Gautam Gambhir when he said that taking 20 wickets is key. I hope the team remembers that. Last time, I felt the bowling unit wasn't picked with the mind-set to take 20 wickets. We must avoid repeating that mistake.' 'There's always the temptation—if you get bowled out early, you want to play an extra batter. But that's a trap. You end up compromising your bowling strength. Let's not fall into that trap again,' he concluded.

Australia's Starc comfortable with IPL pullout regardless of repercussion
Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc is comfortable with his decision to leave the Indian Premier League (IPL) following the India-Pakistan clashes last month regardless of any repercussions, the 35-year-old said. The IPL was suspended on May 9 in the wake of hostilities between the two. It resumed on May 17 after the nuclear-armed neighbours agreed to a ceasefire. While most IPL foreign recruits returned to complete their franchise commitment, the Delhi Capitals duo of Starc and fellow Australian Jake Fraser-McGurk took no further part in the 10-team league. 'I'm comfortable with my decision and how I felt about the whole situation and how it was handled,' Starc told the Sydney Morning Herald on Friday. 'Time will tell with repercussions or how it looks with guys that didn't return. But I've had my questions and concerns leading into that game, and obviously we saw what happened, which played a part in my decision.' ALSO READ | IPL 2025 Tour Diary — From Playoffs to proposals: Capturing tales of glory and love Starc was in Dharamsala, near the Pakistan border, for Delhi's May 9 match against the Punjab Kings. The contest was abandoned midway through, although league organisers blamed it on a floodlights failure. 'Jake and I chose not to (return). So it was a very individual decision, and I'm happy to live with whatever comes of that,' Starc said. He opted out of the Champions Trophy in Pakistan earlier this year citing personal reasons and has skipped the IPL more than once to preserve himself for international cricket. The left-arm quick said he withdrew from the remainder of the IPL because of the extraordinary circumstances. 'I'm still heavily committed to the Delhi group, and I'm not someone that's gone into tournaments and pulled out after being picked up in an auction or whatever that looks like,' Starc said. 'These are different circumstances ... I had a discussion back home then came to a decision, and whatever comes from that I'm comfortable with that and we move forward.'

Netizens Can't Keep Calm Over Mallya's ‘Return To India' Buzz: ‘Covid, Pak War To This Podcast...'
Last Updated: Vijay Mallya hinted at the possibility of returning to India but only if he is promised a fair trial. Vijay Mallya is back in the spotlight. Recently, the 69-year-old appeared in a podcast where he opened up about his journey from the rise and fall of Kingfisher Airlines to becoming the owner of the IPL team Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). He also addressed the financial allegations against him for the first time in years, hinted at the possibility of returning to India but only if he is promised a fair trial. 'If I am assured, absolutely I will. I will think about it seriously," Mallya said on the podcast hosted by YouTuber Raj Shamani. During the discussion, Mallya shared his concerns about India's legal system, especially around how people are treated while awaiting trial. 'There are other people the government of India is targeting for extradition from the UK… where the High Court of Appeal has found Indian detention conditions violative of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR)," he said. Referring to what he sees as prolonged detention without due process, he said, 'They just lock you up and throw away the key." The interview, which is over four hours long, has triggered a wave of reactions online. Some were impressed with how open Mallya was, while others questioned the sudden buzz around him. One user commented, 'Raj Shamani's pod with Vijay Mallya is top notch. Like a cinema. Full of emotions, arguments and counter-arguments… Also, my prejudices about Raj Shamani cluttered a lot." Another said, 'So my generation has now seen demonetisation, Covid, lockdown, India-Pak war, RCB winning the IPL, Covid coming back and Vijay Mallya on a podcast." Which is the PR agency that is employed by Vijay Mallya ? Like a cinema. Full of emotions, arguments and counter arguments. Let the audience decide about a complex and controversial figure. Also, my prejudices about Raj Shamani cluttered a lot. — Satya (@heypinoc) June 6, 2025 'Vijay Mallya has done a podcast. First time he's facing any media since leaving India. Four hours eighteen minutes podcast. WHAT THE HELL I think man has opened up and spoke everything that he felt was unsafe to speak so far," an individual said. is it worthy of watching Vijay Mallya Podcast??— Ayush Singh (@imabhinashS) June 6, 2025 In the podcast, Mallya also addressed the label of 'fugitive." 'You may call me a fugitive for not returning to India after March, but I didn't run away. I flew on a prescheduled visit. Fair enough, I didn't return for reasons I consider valid," he said. He also spoke about the financial allegations against him and questioned the way he's been portrayed, 'Where is the 'chor' (thief) coming from? Where is the 'chori' (theft)?" Mallya left India in March 2016 after the collapse of Kingfisher Airlines. The airline's failure left several Indian banks with unpaid loans worth over Rs 9,000 crore. Since then, he has been living in UK and fighting extradition while Indian authorities continue efforts to bring him back to face charges of financial fraud and money laundering.
