
Fast radio burst detected in 'dead' galaxy raises questions about mysterious signals
With their extremely strong magnetic fields, magnetars have long been considered the prime culprit capable of producing the powerful bursts of energy known as fast radio bursts.
The recent burst, called FRB 20240209A, throws that theory into question. Now, astronomers must consider that not all fast radio bursts come from younger galaxies and stars.
The powerful burst was also traced to an unprecedented 130,000 light-years from its associated galaxy's center, where few other stars exist.
Fast radio bursts, strong pulses of energy detected in radio-wave frequencies, may be a common phenomenon in the cosmos, but their enigmatic origins are something astronomers are only beginning to understand.
Take, for instance, one such fast radio burst astronomers recently tracked to the distant outskirts of a long-dead galaxy.
Based on what scientists thought they knew about fast radio bursts, referred to in astronomy as FRBs, this type of galaxy should not contain the kind of star long thought to produce such bursts. The surprising source of the repeating burst has baffled astronomers, who haven't considered that regions in which no stars are forming could produce such a radio flare.
Detailed in two related studies led by researchers at Northwestern University and McGill University, the discovery "shatters assumptions that FRBs solely emanate from regions of active star formation," according to a press release announcing the research findings. The groundbreaking find, the researchers claim, could reshape our understanding of the universe and its most powerful and mysterious signals.
"Just when you think you understand an astrophysical phenomenon, the universe turns around and surprises us,' Wen-fai Fong, an astronomer at Northwestern who was a senior author on both studies, said in a statement. 'This 'dialogue' with the universe is what makes our field of time-domain astronomy so incredibly thrilling.'
What are fast radio bursts? Magnetars believed to be the cause
Astronomers have been studying fast radio bursts from across the universe since 2007 when the first millisecond-long burst was discovered.
The bright burst of electromagnetic radiation may be brief, but fast radio bursts are so powerful that they produce more energy than what our sun emits in an entire year, astronomers say.
The flashes of radio energy emanate from distant galaxies, with the most distant and most powerful ever observed being found 8 billion light-years away and documented in a 2023 study. While many fast radio bursts are isolated events, those that repeat sporadically become of interest to astronomers, who set their sights on pinpointing those bursts to study them further.
Observations have allowed astronomers to determine that the most likely culprit behind these cosmic flashes are magnetars. With their extremely strong magnetic fields, these neutron stars – small, dense collapsed cores of supergiant stars – are capable of producing the powerful bursts of energy that have been observed for years.
Fast radio burst traced to 'dead' galaxy
The recent burst, called FRB 20240209A, throws that theory into question.
The flare was first detected in February 2024 with a newer radio telescope called the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME.) After it was initially spotted, the radio burst pulsed another 21 times through July at the same source – six flares of which were also detected by a smaller outrigger telescope located 37 miles away from CHIME's main station in British Columbia.
Further observations allowed the team of astronomers to trace FRB 20240209A to a region of space associated with an 11.3-billion-year-old galaxy that no longer forms stars. The researchers believe the flares may have originated in a cluster of old stars orbiting the dead but "extremely luminous" galaxy – located 2 billion light-years from Earth and weighing more than 100 billion times the mass of the sun.
What's perplexing, the researchers said, is that the magnetar in the galaxy should have disappeared long ago.
The discovery forced the team to conclude that not all fast radio bursts come from younger galaxies and stars and that perhaps some originate from older systems, said Tarraneh Eftekhari, an astronomer at Northwestern who led one of the studies and coauthored the other.
FRB traced unprecedented 130,000 light-years from host galaxy
If the region believed to be the source of the flare is indeed a globular cluster, where old, dead stars are bound together by gravity, it would make the radio burst just the second ever to originate from such a location, said Vishwangi Shah, a doctoral student at McGill University in Montreal who co-authored both studies.
But, in a first, the burst was traced to an unprecedented 130,000 light-years from its associated galaxy's center, where few other stars exist.
'This is not only the first FRB to be found outside a dead galaxy, but compared to all other FRBs, it's also the farthest from the galaxy it's associated with," Shah said in a statement. "The location of this FRB so far outside its host galaxy raises questions as to how such energetic events can occur in regions where no new stars are forming.'
Further study of fast radio bursts needed, researchers say
Astronomers have pinpointed the origins of about 50 fast radio bursts to date, but some have suggested that around 1,000 more are waiting to be uncovered. Understanding and studying these radioactive blasts, scientists have posited, should help astronomers better understand the universe, and measure missing matter between galaxies.
Now that the latest research suggests fast radio bursts can originate from more environments than previously believed, the team is calling for more study.
'It's clear that there's still a lot of exciting discovery space when it comes to FRBs,' Eftekhari said in a statement, 'and that their environments could hold the key to unlocking their secrets.'
Both studies were published Jan. 21 in the Astrophysical Journal Letters.

TikTok beauty advice can lead to skin damage in teens
The TikTok video shows a teenage girl in braces applying a series of 14 beauty products to her face, an arsenal that costs nearly $350 all told. It's one of many such videos where girls share their beauty regimens -- but then something goes wrong. "This is what my skin looks like. It is very glowy right now, I love it! But also, I just had some allergic reaction to something that I tried, so ignore how red my face is," says the girl, as her skin turns crimson and inflamed. "I don't know what's happening. But if anybody knows how to get it to stop burning, that would be greatly appreciated, because it actually hurts a lot," the girl tells her audience. This real-life example captures the genuine risks that lurk behind the glamor of "get ready with me" TikTok videos, researchers argue in a new study. Popular TikTok videos featuring teens' personal skin care routine frequently feature products that carry a high risk of skin irritation and allergy, researchers reported Monday in the journal Pediatrics. The top-viewed videos contained an average of 11 potentially irritating active ingredients, researchers found. These could cause a higher risk of skin irritation, sun sensitivity, and a full-blown allergic reaction, researchers said. "That high risk of irritation came from both using multiple active ingredients at the same time, such as hydroxy acids, as well as applying the same active ingredient unknowingly over and over again when that active ingredient was found in three, four, five different products," lead investigator Dr. Molly Hales said in a news release. She's a postdoctoral research fellow in dermatology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. In another video noted in the study, a teenager applied 10 products to her face in six minutes. "As she's applying the products, she begins to express discomfort and burning, and in the final few minutes, she develops a visible skin reaction," senior researcher Dr. Tara Lagu said in a news release. She's an adjunct lecturer of medicine and medical social sciences at Northwestern University. For the study, Hales and Lagu each created a TikTok account in which they reported their age as 13. The "For You" tab made recommendations, and the researchers liked and saved videos featuring youth skin care regimens. As a result, the TikTok algorithm started sending more and more similar suggestions, until the researchers had collected a combined total of 100 videos from 82 creators. About a third of the videos (31%) featured girls 13 and younger, and the rest 14- to 18-year-olds. The girls' regimens featured an average of six products costing an estimated $168 on average, researchers said. In some videos, the girls presented an array of products that cost more than $500. Taking a closer look, researchers found that the 25 most-viewed videos featured products containing an average of 11 potentially irritating active ingredients. Some carried as many as 21. The most common active ingredients across all products were alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) like citric acid, lactic acid and glycolic acid. Citric acid was the most common ingredient, found in 29% of all products. AHAs help treat acne, but can cause skin irritation in girls without acne, "particularly when multiple such products are used together," researchers wrote. AHAs and beta-hydroxy acids also increase the risk of sun sensitivity. More than half of all products also contained added fragrance, which can cause irritation and allergic reaction, researchers said. Worse, only 26% of the portrayed skin care regimens contained sunscreen, which is important for skin health, researchers noted. Overall, the videos portray expensive and time-consuming regimens that "encourage young girls to pursue unattainable ideals of physical perfection under the guise of 'self-care,' " researchers wrote. Many of the videos in the genre dubbed "Get Ready With Me" show girls waking as early as 4:30 a.m. to get ready for school though multistep makeup routines, researchers noted. "It's problematic to show girls devoting this much time and attention to their skin," Hales said. "We're setting a very high standard for these girls." These videos also portray a coded vision of beauty that emphasizes whiteness, using words like "porcelain," "glowy" and "glassy" in an aspirational way, researchers wrote. "We saw that there was preferential, encoded racial language in some cases that really emphasized lighter, brighter skin," Lagu said. Hales agreed. "The pursuit of health has become a kind of virtue in our society, but the ideal of 'health' is also very wrapped up in ideals of beauty, thinness and whiteness," Hales said. Democrats Grill N.I.H. Leader on Cuts: Who Is Calling the Shots?
As the Trump administration clamped down on the country's medical research funding apparatus in recent months, scientists and administrators at the National Institutes of Health often privately wondered how much autonomy the agency's director, Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, had. After all, the Department of Government Efficiency, Elon Musk's signature cost-cutting project, helped drive decisions to cancel or delay research grants. Other projects fell victim to President Trump's face-off with universities over antisemitism. But given an opportunity before a Senate panel on Tuesday to dispel suspicions about who wields influence at the N.I.H., Dr. Bhattacharya did little to claim ownership of perhaps the rockiest period in the agency's many decades of funding research institutions. Decisions to freeze grant payments to Northwestern University 'happened before I got into office,' Dr. Bhattacharya told the panel, members of the Senate Appropriations Committee. He repeatedly said a proposal to shrink the N.I.H. budget by $18 billion — nearly 40 percent — was 'a collaboration between Congress and the administration' and declined to talk in detail about how the cuts would affect the agency. And pressed on an effort to curtail funding to universities for research overhead expenses — a cost-cutting move that is baked into the administration's 2026 budget proposal — Dr. Bhattacharya said, 'I don't want to get into that,' citing ongoing litigation.
