BERLIN — Germany's minimum wage is set to rise by about 14% over the next 18 months under an agreement that appears to defuse a potentially divisive issue for the new government .
A commission in which employers and labor unions are represented recommended on Friday that the minimum wage rise from its current 12.82 euros ($15) per hour to 13.90 euros at the beginning of 2026 and 14.60 euros a year later.

The justices returned the cases to the lower courts to let judges consider whether to again block the rules — at least in part of the country if not the whole nation — in challenges pressed by a group of states.

Europe Eyes US Trade Agreement Ahead of Deadline

The European Union and the US believe they can agree a trade deal before July 9 , the deadline by which Washington is threatening to impose 50% tariffs on almost all EU products — which would trigger a series of countermeasures from the bloc. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen privately told EU leaders yesterday that she was confident a deal could be reached before the deadline to avoid an economically damaging escalation, according to people familiar with the matter. During the meeting there was a shift in tone from leaders, with many saying they would accept some imbalances to avoid the situation getting worse.
