New EU baggage change may impact Ryanair and Aer Lingus carry-on rules

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info The confusion about what size suitcase we are allowed to bring on board flights in the EU has hit headlines recently. Since people have started jetting off on their summer holidays, there's been reports from annoyed travellers that their suitcases have been deemed too big and over the recommended size dimensions allowed on their flights, despite these suitcases being accepted previously. This resulted in these holidaymakers having to pay to take their bags on board. However, there could be a resolution in sight, thanks to the EU. Last week, EU transport ministers proposed standardising the free under seat baggage size on EU airlines. If this proposal is accepted by the European Parliament, it would become law and all EU-based airlines would have to comply, such as Ryanair and Aer Lingus. The proposal said that passengers should be guaranteed one free personal item, measuring up to 40x30x15cm (including wheels and handles), or an item which could reasonably fit under the seat of a plane. Over a decade ago, a European court ruling stated that airline hand baggage should not be subject to an extra fee, as long as it met "reasonable" weight and dimensions. However, "reasonable" was never defined. At the moment, Ryanair allows one free small personal bag which can be brought on board, such as a handbag or laptop bag. It has to measure 40x20x25cm and must fit under the seat in front. Aer Lingus, meanwhile, allow personal items of 25x33x20cm. The EU ministers did not go as far as stipulating whether airlines could charge for overhead cabin bags, per the BBC. This means that even if the above proposals were adopted into law, airlines could still keep charging for overhead cabin bags. Both Ryanair and Aer Lingus charge to take a suitcase or large bag on board. Ryanair passengers who want a cabin bag have to book priority boarding, which allows them to take a 10kg (55x40x20cm) bag onboard, which is stored in the overhead locker. As for Aer Lingus, if you want to take a 10kg bag on board with you and your ticket does not include it, you have to pay for a "10kg carry-on bag" online, with prices starting from €9.99/£9.99. If you'd rather skip that fee, you can drop your 10kg bag off at the check-in desk or bag drop kiosk (available in Dublin, Shannon and London) when check-in opens and collect it again at the bag carousel when you land. This option is free, the airline's website states. Join our Dublin Live breaking news service on WhatsApp. Click this link to receive your daily dose of Dublin Live content. Dubliner has big win despite 'historic' EuroMillions jackpot going unclaimed

One lucky punter is waking up to lifechanging news - having won €500,000 in last night's EuroMillions draw. The draw itself was heralded as 'historic' as the jackpot hit a cap of €250m - but nobody hit the bigtime on that front this time around. However one player scooped the tidy €500,000 prize and the location of where that winning ticket was sold has been revealed. A EuroMillions spokesperson said: "Tuesday night's EuroMillions draw marked a historic moment for players, as the jackpot held steady at its eye-watering cap of €250 million, sparking widespread excitement across Ireland. "While no ticket matched all seven numbers in the 10th June draw, one Dubliner is waking up €500,000 richer after winning the EuroMillions Plus top prize. The winning Quick Pick ticket was purchased on the day of the draw at O'Ciobhain's SuperValu Swords, Boroimhe, Forest Road, Swords, Co. Dublin. "The winning numbers in last night's EuroMillions Plus draw were: 4, 6, 11, 28 and 44". Emma Monaghan, National Lottery spokesperson, added: 'With the EuroMillions jackpot now at a staggering €250 million, excitement is at an all-time high. We're absolutely buzzing to see where and when this life-changing prize will be won. "And with just up to three more draws before the jackpot must be won on Friday, 20th June, the countdown is on! Friday's draw could be the one that makes history for our Irish players.' The National Lottery reminds players that tickets for Friday night's draw can be purchased in-store, through the National Lottery app or at ahead of the 7.30pm cut-off time for sales on tonight's draw. They said that nearly 30 cent in every €1 spent on National Lottery games goes back to Good Causes in the areas of sport, youth, health, welfare, education, arts, heritage and the Irish Language. In total, more than €6.5 billion has been raised for Good Causes since the National Lottery was established 37 years ago. In 2024 alone, €239.3 million was raised for local Good Causes in communities across Ireland.

New Leap card fares for bus services to launch next week

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info New Leap card zones will be introduced next week leading to revised fares for passengers. The new zonal fare structure will launch on June 16 and follows similar updates to Irish Rail tickets that kicked in during April. The National Transport Authority said the new zones will make fares "more equitable and easy-to-understand". They said: "The cost per kilometre travelled is now more consistent, and fares are more closely related to the straight-line distance between the origin and destination of journey." Fares are now calculated on the basis of four new zonal fares: Zone 1 includes areas within a 23km radius of central Dublin. Zone 2 covers areas including Gormanston, Skerries, Kilcock, Sallins & Naas, Greystones. and Kilcoole. Zone 3 covers areas including Drogheda, Enfield, Newbridge and Wicklow Town. Zone 4 covers areas including as Kildare Town and Rathdrum. The TFI 90 minute fare in Zone 1 remains unchanged at €2 for Adult, €1 for Young Adult/Student and €0.65 for Child Leap Cards. For Dublin commuter bus services in Zone 1, the fare will be €2.40 for Adult and €1.20 for Young Adult, Student and Child, when using your TFI Leap card. Zone 2 bus fares will cost €3.70 for a bus to Dublin for adults, and €1.85 for students, young adults and children while Zone 3 fares will cost €5.30 and €2.65 for adults and children respectively. Zone 4 bus fares will be €6.30 for adults and €3.15 for students, young adults and children.
