Review of BBC MasterChef judge's favourite Indian restaurant in Taunton
MATTANCHERRY is an award-winning Indian restaurant in Taunton that has been named in the top eight Somerset restaurants and named 'Best Takeaway in Taunton in 2025'.
It has also just been named in the top five most romantic restaurants in Taunton, awarded a 'coveted' 2024 Good Food Award and a "Recommended restaurant" certificate from the Restaurant Guru.
Alongside these achievements Mattancherry was the only Indian restaurant to be named Bristol, Bath and Somerset's 'Restaurant of the Year' in 2024 (bronze), Tripadvisor's 2024 Traveller's Choice and BBC MasterChef judge William Sitwell's favourite Indian restaurant in Taunton.
I had the pleasure of dining at Mattancherry this week and was really impressed by the attentiveness of the staff from the beginning of my visit.
They were all so friendly and greeted me with huge smiles and no matter how busy the restaurant got my glass of water was constantly topped up and I was constantly asked if I need anything and if I was enjoying the food throughout my visit.

Patha Chaat. (Image: Molly Kirk) I really enjoyed taking in the warm interior as I settled into my seat at my table.
The décor all felt homely, understated and intentional and I really appreciated how the ambience of the restaurant added to and complimented my overall dining experience.
To start off I was given poppadoms with a chutney trio, including mint and pickled lemon flavours while I decided on what to order which was a light and tasty way to start my meal.
In terms of food, I wanted to try a little bit of everything, and the lovely manager Gopi helped me pick out some popular menu items including the Patha Chaat for my starter.
Patha Chaat is a dish consisting of baby spinach leaf fritters topped with sweet yoghurt and tamarind sauce.
As someone who naturally opts for vegetarian dishes I really enjoyed this one.
The fritters were absolutely delicious and I really enjoyed how the savoury spinach mixed with the sweet yoghurt and tart tamarind sauce.
If I had to offer a slight critique I would say at times the strong sweet flavouring of the yoghurt slightly drowned out the taste of the fritters and tamarind for me but overall this did not take away from my overall enjoyment of the starter.

(Image: Molly Kirk) For my main I had Toran (spiced stir fried vegetables including cabbage beans and carrots sauteed with coconut oil, lentils, aromantic curry leaves and subtle spices), Pan-seared Sea Bass served with curry leaf infused mash potato and raw mango ginger coconut sauce, Garlic Naan and beef Kizhi Parotta - which is parotta layered with beef, fresh onion and curry leaves wrapped in banana leaf.
All were also really tasty, with the beef being really tender and flavourful on top of the crispy but also soft parotta mixed with all the delicious stir fried veggies complimenting the meal perfectly.
I also really enjoyed the sea bass and mash potato with the mango ginger coconut sauce perfectly complimenting the meal and providing the perfect dipping sauce for the garlic naan.
Overall, the main was incredible but if I were to be slightly nit-picky I would say that the sea bass was slightly too salty for me.
Despite this, I again do not feel that this significantly took away from my enjoyment of the meal and very much do send my compliments to the chef.
Rose Brulee. (Image: Molly Kirk)For dessert because I was extremely full from trying a bit of everything aforementioned I decided to opt for something light and fragrant.
Enter the Rose Brûlée - a floral twist to the classic Crème Brûlée made with rose petals.
This pretty little number was truly the perfect way to finish off an already successful dinner.
Whilst small in size this dessert is by no means forgettable (and not just because of its bright pink colouring) with the delicious creamy taste of the classic Crème Brûlée shining through but complimented the subtle taste of rose making it also perfectly on theme for the week of Valentine's Day.
Overall, this was a wonderful introduction to yet another restaurant I have never tried before in Taunton.
The food exceeded my expectations, which were already pretty high, and with the outstanding service I received I had no choice but to give this place a high score.
Mattancherry truly deserves the recognition and the awards the team have worked so hard to receive, and I cannot recommend it enough to those who haven't tried it yet.

London's V&A Storehouse museum lets visitors get their hands on 5,000 years of creativity
LONDON (AP) — A museum is like an iceberg. Most of it is out of sight. Most big collections have only a fraction of their items on display, with the rest locked away in storage. But not at the new V&A East Storehouse, where London's Victoria and Albert Museum has opened up its storerooms for visitors to view — and in many cases touch — the items within. The 16,000-square-meter (170,000-square-foot) building, bigger than 30 basketball courts, holds more than 250,000 objects, 350,000 books and 1,000 archives. Wandering its huge, three-story collections hall feels like a trip to IKEA, but with treasures at every turn. The V&A is Britain's national museum of design, performance and applied arts, and the storehouse holds aisle after aisle of open shelves lined with everything from ancient Egyptian shoes to Roman pottery, ancient Indian sculptures, Japanese armor, Modernist furniture, a Piaggio scooter and a brightly painted garbage can from the Glastonbury Festival. 'It's 5,000 years of creativity,' said Kate Parsons, the museum's director of collection care and access. It took more than a year, and 379 truckloads, to move the objects from the museum's former storage facility in west London to the new site. Get up close to objects In the museum's biggest innovation, anyone can book a one-on-one appointment with any object, from a Vivienne Westwood mohair sweater to a tiny Japanese netsuke figurine. Most of the items can even be handled, with exceptions for hazardous materials, such as Victorian wallpaper that contains arsenic. The Order an Object service offers 'a behind-the-scenes, very personal, close interaction' with the collection, Parsons said as she showed off one of the most requested items so far: a 1954 pink silk taffeta Balenciaga evening gown. Nearby in one of the study rooms were a Bob Mackie-designed military tunic worn by Elton John on his 1981 world tour and two silk kimonos laid out ready for a visit. Parsons said there has been 'a phenomenal response' from the public since the building opened at the end of May. Visitors have ranged from people seeking inspiration for their weddings to art students and 'someone last week who was using equipment to measure the thread count of an 1850 dress.' She says strangers who have come to view different objects often strike up conversations. 'It's just wonderful,' Parsons said. 'You never quite know. … We have this entirely new concept and of course we hope and we believe and we do audience research and we think that people are going to come. But until they actually did, and came through the doors, we didn't know.' A new cultural district The V&A's flagship museum in London's affluent South Kensington district, founded in the 1850s, is one of Britain's biggest tourist attractions. The Storehouse is across town in the Olympic Park, a post-industrial swath of east London that hosted the 2012 summer games. As part of post-Olympic regeneration, the area is now home to a new cultural quarter that includes arts and fashion colleges, a dance theater and another V&A branch, due to open next year. The Storehouse has hired dozens of young people recruited from the surrounding area, which includes some of London's most deprived districts. Designed by Diller, Scofidio and Renfro, the firm behind New York's High Line park, the building has space to show off objects too big to have been displayed very often before, including a 17th-century Mughal colonnade from India, a 1930s modernist office designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and a Pablo Picasso-designed stage curtain for a 1924 ballet, some 10 meters (more than 30 feet) high. Also on a monumental scale are large chunks of vanished buildings, including a gilded 15th-century ceiling from the Torrijos Palace in Spain and a slab of the concrete façade of Robin Hood Gardens, a demolished London housing estate. Not a hushed temple of art, this is a working facility. Conversation is encouraged and forklifts beep in the background. Workers are finishing the David Bowie Center , a home for the late London-born musician's archive of costumes, musical instruments, letters, lyrics and photos that is due to open at the Storehouse in September. Museums seek transparency One aim of the Storehouse is to expose the museum's inner workings, through displays delving into all aspects of the conservators' job – from the eternal battle against insects to the numbering system for museum contents — and a viewing gallery to watch staff at work. The increased openness comes as museums in the U.K. are under increasing scrutiny over the origins of their collections. They face pressure to return objects acquired in sometimes contested circumstances during the days of the British Empire Senior curator Georgia Haseldine said the V&A is adopting a policy of transparency, 'so that we can talk very openly about where things have come from, how they ended up in the V&A's collection, and also make sure that researchers, as well as local people and people visiting from all around the world, have free and equitable access to these objects. 'On average, museums have one to five percent of their collections on show,' she said. 'What we're doing here is saying, 'No, this whole collection belongs to all of us. This is a national collection and you should have access to it.' That is our fundamental principle.'

Philadelphia is in good hands, though, as Graham left the organization with a younger brother of sorts in the form of Nolan Smith. He's oozing with personality, and fans will continue to love getting to know him. Another of the fan favorites is a veteran who is four years the Philly Dawg's senior. If you missed Saquon Barkley's recent appearance on Good Morning America, you certainly robbed yourself of a treat. Saquon Barkley further ingratiates himself with Eagles fans and the NFL community. Live long enough, and people will travel in and out of your life. Some people show up to stay, and some show up who will, at some point, leave. Sometimes, hurt feelings and bad days lead to falling out. Oftentimes, the good news is that many of those relationships can be repaired. The Eagles' rivalry with the New York Giants isn't one of those repairable relationships. These two mortal enemies have participated in a feud that dates back to 1933. Saquon's defection from Gotham to the City of Brotherly Love didn't help ease any of the tension. Still, recently, the reigning Offensive Player of the Year made an appearance on Good Morning America. Perhaps you have heard. A former Giants legend, Michael Strahan, is one of the hosts. We live in a world where stars exalt themselves. Sometimes, fans don't help in that regard. They overhype men and women who put their pants on one leg at a time, like the rest of us. There's also another contingent. Some people haven't accomplished much but are cruel and arrogant without having any real reason. Seriously, what's their problem? Saquon is a breath of fresh air, a star who brings dignity and humility to every interaction and encounter with grace and compassion. Despite reaching star status, he gives us hope. Saquon teaches us every time we see him that there are good people in high places. Strahan is right. The Birds and G-Men may never get along, but if Big Blue's fans are being honest, they miss Saquon. He's someone worth cheering for, but Eagles fans are used to that. Remember...
