Umm Tuwayrat excavations reveal Bronze Age funerary practices

AMMAN — The Umm Tuwayrat site is a dolmen field probably related to the Bronze Age located near the city of Shobak. The site was first documented by Elżbieta Dubis, Mohammad Marahleh, and Sami Nawafleh in 2004.
Jagiellonian University (JU) team included preparing a detailed geological map of the site's geological stratigraphy and lithology and the geological layers at this site span from the Late Cretaceous to the Palaeocene.
To the east and west, the natural boundaries of the site were the valleys of two seasonal rivers.
However, several stone structures identified during their search appear to be fragments of two stone walls that probably constituted the original symbolic boundaries of the site from the south and north, noted Marek Novak from JU, adding that within these borders were other stone structures including 12 dolmens and at least 10 stone circles or mounds.
"The function of stone mounds and circles is often difficult to identify. Similar stone circles found throughout the Near East have been linked to a variety of activities [e.g. agricultural, cultic, funerary, land marking]," Novak said.
"However, the rocky nature of the Umm Tuwayrat site makes it unsuitable for agriculture, therefore this activity can be ruled out as the original context of the stone structures," Novak underlined.
He added that due to the funerary nature of the site, the stone circles were used in rituals or during preparation of corpses prior to secondary burial in the dolmens.
Six out of 12 dolmens were well preserved, while the remaining dolmens were damaged. The structures reached up to 160 cm in height, 200 cm in width, and
300 cm in length, Novak said, adding that the goal of the fieldwork was to comprehensively document the structures and all the artefacts scattered on the surface in their vicinity, as well as to methodically explore the soil pockets and hollows around and inside the dolmens.
The Polish team identified deposits resulting mostly from natural erosion processes, especially in the sloping part of the site. Only dolmen contained a thin soil layer that seemed to constitute the primary archaeological context for the artifacts and the deposited human remains.
"In this context, the bones were found folded in a non-anatomical position, piled up inside the dolmen along one of its walls. In addition, several unidentified structures have been found at the site, the most intriguing being a rectangular pool and a well carved into the rock at the top of the hill," said Jacek Karmowski.
Karmowski added that the chronological relationship between these structures and the dolmens remains elusive, and the pool and well may have been built at a later date.
It remains unknown when dolmens were created.
In general, little can be said about this assemblage beyond the fact that pottery fragments, ranging from the Chalcolithic/Early Bronze Age to the Byzantine period, were found near the dolmens and in their interiors.
"The research brought to light 608 artefacts made of siliceous rock scattered among the dolmens. The majority, e.g. flakes and blades were difficult to assign to precise cultural or chronological groups, although some specimens appeared to be associated with the Bronze Age and, possibly, with the Late Neolithic and Chalcolithic," Karmowski elaborated.
These included flakes with steep or semi-steep retouches on the edges transverse to the débitage axis and minor retouches on the sides, classified as inserts or sickle.
The latter are considered to be more characteristic of the EB I, but they also occurred in Chalcolithic assemblages, although in smaller numbers.
Only one unmistakable example of a tabular scraper was found but numerous flake tools of a similar type, commonly referred to as scrapers were present as well. Notably, the forms mentioned here have also been recorded in Neolithic contexts.
"However, given the other finds at the site, including structures and pottery, these tools should be attributed to the Chalcolithic or the Bronze Age," Novak underscored, adding that the lithic assemblage also contained core bifacial tools, which rather seem attributable to the Chalcolithic.

"Bread is a rare find during an excavation. Usually, you only find crumbs," he said.

Cyprus lecture explores Mediterranean culinary heritage, diet's evolution

AMMAN — As a part of its Cyprus lecture series, the Council for British Research in the Levant organised a presentation on Wednesday under a title 'From Ancient Fields to Modern Plates: The Culinary Heritage of Cyprus and the Mediterranean Diet'. 'We do not focus on the properties of plants but the observations are based on anthropology, sociology and history,' said Associate Professor at the Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Centre Evi Margaritis. Margaritis noted that focus of her lecture is on the role of food as a medium of communication-enhancing social relations and distinguish between those who belong or are excluded from the group (communal cooking and eating). During history Cyprus has been one of the hubs of the Mediterranean diet and food was preserved in three ways-waterlogged, desiccated and carbonised. Margaritis' academic interests are environmental archaeology and palaeoeconomy, since she specialised Archaeobotany at the University of Sheffield. She tried to connect a Bronze Age Mediterranean diet with more contemporary Cypriot cuisine by analysing seeds, starches and wood. 'High values of the xerophytic wood/shrubare also recorded whereas the desert and warmly mixed forest biomes display the lowest scores,' the professor explained, adding that the evidence suggests that due to a dry environment agricultural activity was very low. Regarding farm animals, the domesticated cow was introduced to Cyprus sometime during the early Neolithic period, but it 'inexplicably disappeared from Cyprus shortly afterward its initial arrival and was not re-introduced to the island until the beginning of the Bronze Age', Margaritis said. The professor said that as a farm animal, the cow provides both traction power for ploughing and a source of ample manure. 'These aspects of the cow allow for the farming of less fertile land and facilitate agricultural extensification — the growing of crops with minimum input and maximum output,' Margaritis underlined. The absence of the cow in Cyprus seems to have delayed the transition from small-scale intensive farming to large-scale agricultural regimes on this island, according to the professor, and cows reintroduction at the start of the Bronze Age can be viewed as the beginning of a major shift in farming practices on Cyprus 'The possibility of plough agriculture and the additional source of manure allowed settlements to occupy less fertile land located closer to the island's copper resources,' Margaritis said. This change in the island's settlement pattern, however, did not occur until the later Bronze Age, possibly due to a period of agricultural experimentation with the cow before moving to areas of higher-risk farming,' the professor elaborated. Regarding commodity crops in the Bronze Age Cyprus, value was added in the transformation of these crops into dried fruits, oil, wine etc. To increase their longevity while reducing their bulk, these goods became a matter of prestige. 'New basis for manufactured food commodities for exchange to be routed through cities, accompanying the general increase in trade of specialised craft items. This development can be seen as parallel and comparable with the specialisation of animal secondary products such as wool, milk and animal traction,' Margaritis underlined. To bring the past to the future, scholars revisited and recorded the tangible rural heritage; safeguarded the living intangible heritage; protected the biodiversity; and asked the right questions from the past for a sustainable future. 'The Mediterranean diet is widely regarded as among the most nutritionally balanced and sustainable in the world. The origins of the Mediterranean dietary pattern, based on an abundance of plant foods [including olive oil as the main source of fat], low animal fat intake and moderate wine consumption, are often placed in the Middle Ages or, at most, Antiquity, but its roots can actually be traced back to prehistoric times,' Margaritis elaborated. The presence of the Mediterranean triad (wheat, olive and grape) has been attested in the Bronze Age archaeological record across the Mediterranean, and recent evidence suggests that wine-making started during the Neolithic. Similarly, evidence for olive oil production dates back to the mid-5th mil. BC, the preparation of bulgur and trachanas (traditional cereal-based foods from south-eastern Europe) has been documented in Bulgaria in the early 6th mil. BC, and bread-making has been attested in the Levant as early as 14,400 years ago, Margaritis highlighted 'The widespread use of vegetables, herbs and spices has been textually documented in the Eastern Mediterranean for over three thousand years, and archaeobotanical evidence of their consumption exists for both Classical and prehistoric times.' 'In summary, archaeological evidence suggests that several elements [low animal fat intake, high reliance on plants, including herbs and spices]and modes of preparation [bread-making, oil and wine production] of what is nowadays considered the Mediterranean diet were already present across the Mediterranean basin during the Bronze Age or even the Neolithic,' Margaritis underscored. However, over the last decades, a progressive shifting away from traditional healthy dietary patterns has been observed in Mediterranean countries, leading to increased obesity rates and consequent health problems. 'Archaeological data can help us understand how Mediterranean culinary traditions survived for millennia and, ultimately, contribute to the contemporary valorisation of the traditional Mediterranean diet among non-academic stakeholders, including the civil society, the private sector and policymakers,' Margaritis concluded.

Excavations at Wadi Faynan reveal Early Bronze Age household, copper trade connections

This large area, part of which is under agriculture, lies along the modern dirt road leading to the Faynan Eco Lodge. While previous research had focused mostly on surface finds, the JU team aimed to conduct a more thorough examination of one of the structures to determine its precise dating and offer an interpretation of its function— for example, lithic sites. The part of the site selected by the JU team for test excavations —WadiFaynan731 (WF731)— is located in an area noteworthy for its savannah-like landscape and rich copper deposits, said Marek Novak, noting that it was discovered during the works of the abovementioned Wadi Faynan Landscape Survey. "Surface finds collected at WF731 during the survey primarily consisted of pottery sherds, dated mainly to the Early Bronze Age I. These artefacts provided valuable insights into the chronology of WF731 and its connection to the broader archaeological landscape," Novak added. "Additionally, the survey team noticed similar structures in the vicinity, hinting at a larger network of sites in this area," Novak underlined. He added that the relatively small scale of the works conducted in 2021 by the JU team permitted to distinguish only two strata: one connected with the functioning of the building, and the other being a thin layer of dirt and intrusions accumulated after the structures went out of use. Furthermore, most of the pottery found at the site seems chronologically consistent, suggesting their contemporaneity to the structure. Nevertheless, the construction of the enclosure most likely predated the formation of the stone collapse northeast from it, Novak said. He noted that a thick layer constituting the floor level (about 17 centimetres), visible in the cross-section of the deepest sounding, might suggest that the accumulation of strata took place over an extended period. "The interior of the room yielded numerous pottery fragments —parts of vessels once used by the household's inhabitants— along with lithic tools and numerous pieces of raw malachite [a copper carbonate hydroxide mineral],which can be smelted to obtain copper," Novak explained. However, the excavations brought traces of copper processing in the form of hearths or other fire-related installations. It is possible that either the inhabitants were involved only in the extraction of the raw material for trade, or they processed it somewhere else (perhaps near the mines), as suggested by previous research. Nevertheless, samples collected within the archaeological context of the household at WF731, preliminarily interpreted as raw copper fragments, are under laboratory analyses to determine if they underwent metallurgical processing, Novak elaborated, adding that future excavations might supply more evidence to clarify this issue. Pottery fragments found at the site can be dated to the Early Bronze Age potentially even Phase IA. "The latter is indicated by holders with visible depressions on the edges, similar to those from other locations. Whole mouth jars were also discovered at the site. Also in this case, they differ from those found in Wadi Quseir by their more closed shapes and arms that slope less steeply," Novak said. He added that a small silo, approximately 1.35 metre in diameter, was found against the northern wall of the house. The silo's stone circle, visible already on the surface, was composed of around 15 closely arranged medium-sized stones, as well as layers of smaller stones mixed with gravel and mud. "Unfortunately, while some pottery fragments were uncovered inside the silo, the absence of archaeo-botanical evidence hinders the identification of supplies stored within. The excavations also revealed a circular enclosure, about 15 metres in diameter, encompassing most of the site including the household. This double-faced wall, 0.6 to 1 metre in width, featured a gap in its southeastern part, suggesting a potential entrance," Novak underscored.
