McDonald's to shutter CosMc's locations after short-lived test, will add drinks to menu

New York Post23-05-2025

McDonald's is closing all five of its CosMc's pilot locations this summer, just 18 months after launching the beverage-focused concept to much fanfare and long drive-thru lines outside its first store in suburban Chicago.
The fast-food giant insisted the pilot program paved the way for a major new push into the competitive specialty drink market — this time from inside its core restaurants.
'The main goal of the CosMc's test was to create a launchpad for learning for the McDonald's System — and the insights we've gathered have given us a whole new way to get closer to our fans,' the company said Friday.

Launched in late 2023, CosMc's was designed to explore the booming drive-thru beverage category dominated by chains like Dutch Bros, Scooters and Swig.
McDonald's opened additional outposts in Texas and briefly considered expanding with smaller-format stores after shuttering three larger ones in January.

CEO Chris Kempczinski revealed the company was planning a change in strategy during an earnings call earlier this month.
'We have discovered some interesting learnings through our CosMc's test, which has better informed our understanding of consumers' customization preferences and interest in new, emerging beverage categories,' Kempczinski told analysts.
Rather than build out a second brand, McDonald's will add the CosMc's beverages to menus at its existing US restaurants. The new flavors will be part of an in-store test launching later this year.

'Building on the insights gained from the pilot standalone locations, CosMc's-inspired flavors will be landing at McDonald's… seamlessly blending out of this world tastes into the McDonald's experience,' the company said.
A new dedicated beverage category team is now tasked with scaling the effort across the US.
McDonald's emphasized that CosMc's served as a 'learning lab' to test new technologies, bold flavors, and fast menu iteration in real-world, customer-facing environments.
The company said it made quick adjustments based on feedback and will apply those insights moving forward.

The standalone CosMc's app will also be discontinued as the five remaining stores — four in Texas and one in Illinois — are phased out beginning in late June.
Meanwhile, the beverage race is heating up. Taco Bell is accelerating its own in-restaurant drink initiative, Live Mas Café, adding pressure on McDonald's to act quickly in a rapidly evolving category.

List of Stores Closing in June

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Major retailers like Walgreens, Rite Aid, McDonald's CosMC, and TD Bank locations are all preparing to bid farewell to customers in June. Why It Matters Companies close store locations for many reasons. While shifts in consumer shopping behavior and lower demand can cause stores to close, corporations often choose to shutter underperforming locations. The retail sector faces several challenges in today's economy. Many shoppers have turned to online platforms, causing companies to reassess their brick-and-mortar presence. More than 2,500 store closures are planned across the United States this year, according to The Mirror. A Walgreens in San Francisco, California, as seen on April 30, 2025. These units specialized in beverages while offering limited food options. "What started as a belief that McDonald's had the right to win in the fast-growing beverage space quickly came to life as a multi-location, small-format, beverage-focused concept," McDonald's said. "It allowed us to test new, bold flavors and different technologies and processes – without impacting the existing McDonald's experience for customers and crew. By creating a learning lab – in a way that only McDonald's can – the CosMc's team was able to test and learn in real customer-facing environments, which allowed for greater agility and speed. Quick adds and edits to the menu based on feedback led to more focused choices for our fans as the test continued." The chain reported that same-store sales declined 3.6 percent in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. "CosMc is just another example of a failed experiment," Drew Powers, the founder of Illinois-based Powers Financial Group, told Newsweek. "I think they were trying to compete with the likes of Starbucks and Sonic with the beverage-focused drive-thru and drive-in concept, and it simply did not produce enough sales to justify a stand-alone location." TD Bank is closing 38 locations, with six of them slated for Massachusetts. Despite this, TD Bank opened two new locations in New York (Brighton Beach in Brooklyn and Jerome Avenue in the Bronx) and one store in Boston (Nubian Square). For Rite Aid, 47 stores have been identified across nine states to close as the company navigates a bankruptcy filing. Nearly all of the 1,240 stores will likely be listed for sale eventually, but customers can use gift cards or rewards until June 6. Walgreens will also be shuttering 1,200 underperforming stores across the span of three years. CEO Tim Wentworth previously said the drugstore chain had closed 2,000 stores over the last decade. "We are confident it will yield significant financial and consumer benefits over the long term," Wentworth said. The company reported a $3 billion loss in the last quarter of fiscal year 2024, an increase from the $180 million loss in the prior year. June closures include Salinas, California; Jacksonville and Miami, Florida; Chicago, Illinois; Pleasantville, New Jersey; New York City and Syracuse, New York; Durham and Raleigh, North Carolina; Garfield Heights and Reynoldsburg, Ohio; Bremerton, Washington. Several stores are also closing in West Virginia and Massachusetts. Main Street – June 26 Gloucester, Eastern Avenue – June 23 Springfield, Boston Road – June 24 Swansea, Wilbur Avenue – June 23 Webster, Main Street – June 24 Worcester, Grafton Street – June 25 "Walgreens kept adding retail locations for too long in the face of increased competition," Drew Powers, the founder of Illinois-based Powers Financial Group, told Newsweek. "Foot traffic has slowed for Walgreens as more big-box stores and online outlets added pharmacy services. Add to slower sales the evermore stringent regulations, decreased reimbursements, and increased cost of they can weather that storm for a while, the only survival plan is to close more retail locations." What People Are Saying Alex Beene, a financial literacy instructor for the University of Tennessee at Martin, told Newsweek: "For some major retailers, 2025 is becoming a year of consolidation. Retail locations that have struggled in recent years to remain profitable due to rising costs and less demand are being shuttered, as companies focus their efforts on more successful stores. The hope is these closures will ultimately produce more fiscal and operational efficiency, but it will come at the cost of customers who favored these locations having fewer options." Michael Ryan, a finance expert and the founder of told Newsweek: "These aren't random casualties; they're strategic amputations of unprofitable limbs to save the corporate $15+ minimum wages to supply chain inflation, all crushing their razor-thin margins. Combine this with the march of e-commerce and changing consumer habits post-pandemic, physical retail becomes a luxury many companies can no longer afford." Kevin Thompson, the CEO of 9i Capital Group and the host of the 9innings podcast, told Newsweek: "From day one, CosMc's felt like a misstep, but let's not forget McDonald's isn't just a burger joint; it's a real estate empire. This was an unfortunate experiment that did not pan out the way they had hoped." What Happens Next Beene called the closures by many of the companies a "smart move." "We've seen many retailers face bankruptcy before finally scaling back. It's a good sign these retailers are being more proactive," Beene said. However, consumers should expect longer drives to pharmacies and fewer banking branches. "The companies making these cuts are trimming fat. Convenience now trumps proximity, and efficiency will beat ubiquity every time," Ryan said.

How McDonald's Is Stepping Up Its Burger Game In 2025

McDonald's burgers have had mixed reviews over the years to say the least. In fact, Reddit users ranked it as the worst burgers of any fast food chain out of 14 businesses. In 2025, however, the company plans to change that with its "Best Burger Initiative," which includes 50 small changes. A few tweaks of note are improving the toasting of its buns, adding white onions to patties on the grill, and dousing more of its signature sauce on Big Macs. These small changes are a sign that McDonald's isn't trying to reinvent its products entirely so much as look for new, minor opportunities to improve them. Considering that McDonald's sells 6.5 million burgers every day, such changes are more feasible for every location to follow rather than something as drastic as changing up beef suppliers or installing new cooking equipment. CEO Chris Kempczinski also told The Wall Street Journal that he wants to accelerate the rate at which the company rolls out new signature burgers, further diversifying its menu while maintaining the modifications that may improve customer satisfaction. But, McDonald's new 2025 improvements aren't just limited to its burgers. Read more: Which US Steakhouse Chains Use The Best Quality Beef? While the Best Burger Initiative is by far its biggest change, McDonald's plans to roll out plenty of other improvements to win back customers. Most notably, the company's international division leader, Jill McDonald, is now the chain's first restaurant experience officer, taking a look at operations from the perspective of a boots-on-the-ground manager. Plenty of folks swear that McDonald's fountain drinks taste better than any other chain, thanks to it chilling both the syrup and water before it even touches a cup, but its lemonade has always lacked demand. The chain decided to make a big upgrade and now makes it with only lemon juice, pulp, and cane sugar, simplifying the recipe to improve its taste. Much like its Best Burger Initiative, this small change shows the company is looking to improve its existing menu in little ways, possibly in an attempt to avoid the menu items that failed so spectacularly in the past. Another aspect of McDonald's glow up is customers getting more bang for their buck. In November 2024, McDonald's announced it was bringing a new type of value to its restaurants, the McValue menu. Starting in January 2025, customers at any McDonald's location can pay an extra dollar to add another menu item of equal or lesser value to the one they purchase at full price. Between this and local and in-app exclusive deals, customer value is a key element of McDonald's 2025 glow-up. Want more food knowledge? Why McDonald's CosMc's closure might not be the brand fail you think it is

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. It's splashdown for McDonald's CosMc's brand. The surprising space-themed offshoot has been scrubbed, and its remaining five stores and app will shut this month only a year and half after it launched into orbit in Ohio and then Texas. Described as a "bold new beverage concept from the McDonald's universe", CosMc's took off with as much fanfare as a SpaceX rocket launch, attracting long lines at the initial flagship store in Chicago when it opened. It had been widely billed as a potential Starbucks rival with strange retro-futurist sci-fi branding, so its closure is now being seen as a brand fail for the fastfood giant. But is it mission aborted or mission complete? CosMc's was a strange proposition. The name was lifted from a long-forgotten piece of McDonald's lore: CosMc was an alien who appeared as a fleeting side character in McD's ads back in the late 80s and 90s. The company resuscitated the name to pilot a chain of small-format stores that offered unusual, customisable drinks, from turmeric spiced lattes to churro frappes and a prickly pear-flavored slushy with popping candy alongside token McDonald's snacks like the McFlurry and McMuffin. The aim was to lure afternoon snackers from the likes of Starbucks, Dutch Bros and Dunkin' Donuts. Image 1 of 2 Image 2 of 2 But the end of CosMc's may not be the failure it's being painted as. It's probable that it was never intended to rollout as a permanent brand. As one designer pointed out to us at the time, even the CosMc's logo felt odd and unfinished. A blend of Cadbury's and storage facility colours, like it was a temporary pop-up. Like other brand offshoots such as KFC's Saucy, CosMc's was a laboratory that allowed McDonald's to experiment with things that would have been risky to try under its core identity, including creative flavours and new tech, such as drive-thru lanes that manage traffic according to order complexity and evolving menus that could be quickly edited based on customer feedback (perhaps McDonalds should have used CosMc's to test its AI drive-thru before rolling it out at its own restaurants). CEO Chris Kempczinski described the project as a 'learning lab' through which McDonald's had "discovered some interesting learnings" including about consumers' customisation preferences and interest in new, emerging beverage categories. It might seem like an expensive experiment, but McDonald's has the resources to run this kind of innovation incubator, and the lessons learned can create new value in its main brand. The fastfood giant now has a dedicated category team focused on beverages and says it will test CosMc's most popular drinks in select McDonald's locations later in the year. So some of those wild combinations could end up entering orbit on the main McDonald's menu, continuing the company's battle for the specialty drink market withing the galaxy of the main brand.
