Sharmistha Panoli granted interim bail by Calcutta High Court

The Calcutta High Court on Thursday granted interim bail to influencer Sharmistha Panoli , arrested for allegedly posting video on social media with communal comments. The court had denied bail to the student on Tuesday. Panoli, a 22-year-old Pune law student, was arrested in Gurugram by Kolkata Police on Friday night after a social media post allegedly containing derogatory remarks went viral. The video, posted on Instagram, triggered widespread backlash for allegedly insulting a religious community and the Prophet Muhammad, despite Panoli issuing an unconditional apology and removing the content. On Saturday, a Kolkata court sent Panoli to judicial custody till June 13. On May 14, she posted a video in response to a Pakistani social media user who had questioned India's stance following the Pahalgam terror attack. Live Events In the clip, she sharply criticised Bollywood celebrities for remaining silent on Operation Sindoor—a major military response following the attack. Panoli's video, initially intended as a political reaction, quickly spiralled into controversy. Several viewers, especially from Muslim communities in India and abroad, said she made offensive remarks about Islam and the Prophet Muhammad. The backlash was immediate and intense. Hashtags like #ArrestSharmistha began trending, and she reportedly received rape and death threats. Despite deleting the post and issuing an apology the following day, the situation had already escalated legally. She posted on social media on 15 May, 'I do hereby tender my UNCONDITIONAL APOLOGY. Whatever was put are my personal feelings and I never intentionally wanted to hurt anybody. So anybody is hurt, I'm sorry… Henceforth, I will be cautious in my public posts.' Multiple complaints were filed in Kolkata. Police say they attempted to serve legal notices to Panoli and her family, but she was allegedly untraceable. A senior police officer explained, 'The case pertains to an Instagram video by a woman named Sharmistha Panoli that hurt the religious sentiments of members of a particular community.' With no response to the notices, a court in Kolkata issued an arrest warrant. Panoli was detained in Gurugram and brought to Kolkata on transit remand. Police also seized her phone and laptop for forensic analysis, looking for evidence of further offensive or manipulated content. In response to criticism of the arrest, Kolkata Police stated, 'All legal procedures were duly adhered to. All attempts were made to serve notice, but she was found absconding on every occasion. Consequently, a warrant of arrest was issued by the competent court… We urge all concerned to refrain from spreading unverified or speculative content and to rely on authentic sources.'

'She manhandled him during confrontation': Paan Singh Tomar's granddaughter booked for assaulting junior engineer in Jhansi; officer was on duty for meter installation

JHANSI : The granddaughter of the late Chambal rebel and ex-army man Paan Singh Tomar has been booked for allegedly assaulting a junior engineer from the power department, police said on Thursday. The incident occurred on Tuesday in Punjabi Colony, under Babina police station limits, when a team led by junior engineer Vaibhav Rawat was installing smart meters as part of a rural power distribution upgrade. According to SHO Tulsi Ram Pandey, when the team tried to replace the electricity meter at the house of ex-serviceman Shivram Singh Tomar, his teenage daughter Sapna Tomar resisted the move. She allegedly manhandled the engineer during the confrontation. A case has been registered against Sapna Tomar under IPC sections pertaining to assault and obstructing a public servant from performing official duties. The case attracted public attention after a video of the incident, allegedly recorded by a power department staff member, surfaced online. The footage appeared to show Sapna engaging in a physical altercation with the engineer. Interest in the case has intensified as Sapna is said to be the granddaughter of Paan Singh Tomar, the Indian Army soldier-turned-dacoit whose life inspired a 2012 Bollywood biopic. Tomar was killed in a police encounter in Morena nearly 40 years ago. Police said an investigation is underway and further action will be based on the findings.

Ex-serviceman who shot son dead, injured wife often used to threaten to kill them: FIR

The 55-year-old ex-serviceman, Baljinder Singh, who allegedly shot dead his son and left his wife injured at their residence in Buani village of Ludhiana district late Tuesday night, would often threaten the mother-son duo to kill them after getting drunk. A police complaint was also registered against him in this connection earlier, his brother-in-law (wife's brother), Takwinder Singh, told Khanna police. An 'inebriated' Baljinder allegedly opened fire from his 32-bore licensed pistol at his wife, Balwinder Kaur, 52, and son Jagmeet Singh, 26, following a heated argument. Jagmeet suffered three bullet injuries in his chest and stomach and died on the spot, while Balwinder is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Ludhiana and is stated to be stable, police said. Khanna police booked Baljinder Singh for murder under section 103 of the BNS and section 27 of the Arms Act at the Doraha police station on the statement of Balwinder's brother, Takwinder Singh of Jassar village. Takwinder stated in his complaint that Balwinder married Baljinder over 30 years ago, and the couple had two sons, another being Manpreet, 28. 'They never had a pleasant relationship, as Baljinder mostly used to stay out during his service in the Army. However, after his retirement 7-8 years ago, he started a private school bus business,' the complainant said. 'While staying with his family after retirement, he would get drunk daily and fight with his wife and younger son, threatening to kill them with his pistol. In 2024, a police complaint was filed, and Doraha police initiated preventive action against him. But he started abusing his wife and son again,' the complainant alleged. Takwinder alleged that Tuesday night, his sister told him over the phone that Baljinder was again misbehaving with them. 'I visited them immediately and found Baljinder furious and misbehaving with everyone. I tried to pacify him, and when I was about to leave their house, Baljinder again took out his weapon and said that he would finish his wife and son. He opened fire, targeting them before my eyes. Jagmeet suffered bullet injuries in his chest and stomach, while Balwinder got bullets in her back. They were rushed to a hospital in Ludhiana while Baljinder fled the scene. Jagmeet died,' the complainant stated. Doraha police station SHO Inspector Akash Dutt said, 'Earlier too, action was taken against Baljinder and he was detained on his wife's complaint as he used to threaten and abuse them after getting drunk. The accused is absconding and is yet to be arrested. His son's autopsy will be conducted on Thursday, and his wife is stable now.'
