The Blitzboks have one last chance to show what they're made of when they take part in the World Championship in Los Angeles this weekend.
It's a 'winner-take-all' tournament — that is, whoever wins the tournament will be regarded as champions for the 2024/25 season.
The top eight teams throughout the season qualify for the World Championship. The Blitzboks, after a topsy-turvy campaign, finished fourth in the standings.
Philip Snyman's team will take on Olympic champions France, Great Britain and series winners Argentina in their pool. The top two teams advance to the semi-finals. The other group consists of New Zealand, Australia, Spain and Fiji.
The action takes place on Saturday, with the knockout games on Sunday.
'Every individual will have to be on point'
Snyman said this weekend's results would define the Blitzboks' season.
'We can look back at the regular series where we had a mixed bag of results, but this effort here in Los Angeles will define the season,' said Snyman.
'There were brilliant moments, average moments and some poor moments, but we are looking towards this weekend, not behind us. We had our review of the series and know what we were good at, or not. Our fourth place in the series was an improvement from the previous year, but we want to be remembered by more than that.
'To be successful this weekend, we approach this as a complete team effort where every individual will have to be on point when it comes to roles and responsibilities and to make sure that his job gets done. I believe our system is such that we will be successful if we manage that.'
'New energy'
Snyman said their preparations went well and he was pleased with the trio of Ronald Brown, Mfundo Ndhlovu and Quewin Nortje, who joined the squad for this trip.
'We needed some new energy, given the short turnaround from Singapore, where we did not deliver,' said the Blitzboks coach.
'I am happy to say we got that from them. Overall, it will be a weekend of enjoyment, effort and energy and each of those players are able to provide that. We are in a good space.'

Blitzbok star Zander Reynders scores big in rugby and engineering

Blitzbok rugby player Zander Reynders is proving you can chase your dreams both on the sports field and in the classroom. The 24-year-old recently graduated with a degree in computer engineering from the University of Pretoria (UP), just a few days after helping South Africa win gold at the 2025 HSBC SVNS World Championship in Los Angeles. Reynders received his degree during the autumn graduation season in May. He studied in the faculty of engineering, built environment and information technology while playing for UP-Tuks and later the Blitzboks. 'Being part of this squad, standing on that podium in LA, it's everything I dreamt about when I used to watch these games with my family during December holidays,' said Reynders. South Africa beat Spain 19-5 in the final. Reynders was playing in only his third tournament as a fully-fledged member of the team, showing that hard work and determination can really pay off. Reynders made his Blitzbok debut in Cape Town in December 2024 after a training camp in Stellenbosch. 'Standing alongside someone like (Blitzboks co-captain) Impi (Visser), who's represented both UP and the country with such distinction, inspires me to uphold the same standards,' he said. He believes that his studies helped him improve as a player. 'Engineering taught me to stay calm under pressure and think critically. In a final like that, it's not just about fitness — it's about mental clarity,' said Reynders. Balancing sport and studies was not easy but Reynders says it helped him grow. 'That mindset helps on the rugby field too, whether it's solving a defensive puzzle or executing a set piece,' he said. Now, with two international titles and a degree, Reynders wants to make a difference on and off the field. 'My goal is to live a life of impact,' he said. 'I want to keep contributing to the Blitzboks and embrace every chance to represent South Africa with pride. But I'm also passionate about using my engineering background to drive innovation — especially in areas like sustainable development and conservation.' He hopes his story inspires other students. 'Whether you're in the lecture hall, on the rugby field, or simply figuring out who you are, I hope my journey shows that hard work, consistency, and support from the right people can take you far,' said Reynders. Reynders still feels proud to be part of the UP community. 'The world needs your energy and your courage. Keep dreaming boldly and acting bravely,' he said. His message to young people is simple: 'Make the most of every opportunity, big or small. Don't underestimate the power of consistency. Show up every day with purpose and discipline. Surround yourself with people who challenge and support you. Run your own race and trust the process.'

Liverpool bank on 'world-class' Wirtz after record deal

Here we go Germn midfielder Florian Wirtz is set to complete a move to Liverpool in the Premier League. Photo: Franck Fife/AFP Image: Franck Fife/AFP The golden boy of German football is set to become the new prince of the Premier League as Florian Wirtz prepares to join Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen for a club-record fee. Fresh from winning a 20th English top-flight title, Arne Slot's Reds have broken the bank to land a rising star already labelled as one of the world's best by former Reds midfielder and Wirtz's former coach Xabi Alonso. British media reported on Friday that the Premier League champions had agreed a club-record deal worth up to £116 million ($157 million) to secure the services of the attacking midfielder. Liverpool can now agree personal terms with a player coveted by a number of top European clubs. Get your news on the go, click here to join the IOL News WhatsApp channel. Video Player is loading. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Ad loading Wirtz's abundant potential as a teenager sparked a row between his hometown club Cologne and Leverkusen five years ago when Leverkusen, who are backed by pharmaceutical giants Bayer, swooped to sign him at 17. Cologne argued that a gentleman's agreement not to poach youth team players had been violated, but Leverkusen said Wirtz was a first-team signing and within months he had made his Bundesliga debut. His rise was interrupted by a cruciate knee ligament injury in March 2022 that forced him to miss the next 10 months. By the time he returned, Alonso had been installed as Leverkusen boss and together they would spearhead the club's greatest days. Leverkusen ended Bayern Munich's grip on the Bundesliga in stunning fashion, romping to the title and the German Cup without losing a single match in the 2023/24 season. Wirtz netted his first career hat-trick on the day the title was sealed against Werder Bremen, on his way to being crowned Bundesliga player of the year. "Flo is one of the top players in the world, he's world class," said Alonso, who compared his protege to Lionel Messi in terms of his understanding of the game. "Why is Messi so good? Because he knows how and when to play simple passes. Messi says: 'You're in a better position? Here, there you have the ball'," said Alonso, a hero of Liverpool's 2005 Champions League triumph. "It's not always about making the most brilliant move, but the best and smartest. Florian can do that. That's why he's so good." 'The full package' Both star player and coach committed to staying with the Leverkusen project for another 12 months, but defeat in the Europa League final to Atalanta to round off the 2023/24 campaign was a sign of things to come. Bayern restored their grip on the German game last season but could not convince Wirtz to follow the lead of many others in joining from their Bundesliga rivals. Instead, he made it clear his preference was a move to the Premier League champions and the chance to add his name to Liverpool's cast of legends. "A huge talent, huge future in front of him, so Liverpool is the place for him," said the club's former captain Steven Gerrard. Despite 57 goals and 65 assists in 197 games for Leverkusen, Wirtz will begin life at Anfield in the shadow of Mohamed Salah. But the Reds are banking on Wirtz's creativity to help maintain the 32-year-old's prolific goalscoring numbers and ease the burden of carrying the Liverpool attack. The club's previous record signing, £85 million recruit Darwin Nunez, has failed to deliver and could be sold to help recoup some of their major outlay on new faces. Liverpool will hope Wirtz can handle the pressure of his price tag and the physicality of the Premier League to ensure there is no second season slump under Slot. Former Germany head coach Hansi Flick is in no doubt about what the midfielder has to offer. "He's simply an outstanding technician, loves to play, is very creative, has a good shot, runs hard and is quick," he said. "He's the full package." Australia all out for 207, South Africa need 282 to win World Test Championship

JOB DONE South Africa's Kagiso Rabada (L) celebrates with Ryan Rickelton (R) after taking the wicket of Australia's Nathan Lyon on day three of the ICC World Test Championship cricket final, at Lord's cricket ground, in London, on June 13, 2025. PictureL Glyn Kirk/AFP South Africa bowled Australia out for 207 on Friday morning at Lord's, meaning the Proteas will need 282 to win the World Test Championship final. Kagiso Rabada was once again the star for South Africa, as he ended the innings with 4/59. Aussie number nine Mitchell Starc frustrated South Africa with 58 not out as shared in a final wicket stand of 59 with Josh Hazlewood (17). Since there have only been two sessions of the six so far in this Test, which has yielded less than four wickets, it's clear to see that the batsmen have simply not been able to hold their own. Rabada (5/51) and Marco Jansen (3/49) starred in the first innings for SA as Australia collapsed from 192/5 to 212 all out.
