Portable 'tiny house' RVs are cheap and fun

Yahoo17-02-2025

SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – Have you ever considered selling everything and buying a tiny house? If so, would you consider traveling part-time in an RV first?
The United States is undergoing a social movement that promotes the use of tiny homes that offer eco-friendly and lower-cost lifestyles. But with many tiny house companies charging big prices for small spaces, it's difficult for some Americans to make the switch to tiny house living.
That's where RVs come into the picture. A used RV can cost a fraction of the price of a new tiny home, and the portability of a small RV can help potential tiny-home buyers practice tiny-space living before they fully commit to the lifestyle.
There are many reasons to choose a lightweight RV as your portable tiny home, including:
Fuel efficiency: Lightweight RVs can easily be towed by small SUVs or small trucks. The lightweight RV setup is easier to maneuver than a heavy motorhome, which can be more expensive than lightweight RVs to move and operate.
Smaller camping spaces, that are not options for motorhomes and larger SUVs, are no problem for small vehicles and lightweight RVs.
Lightweight RVs are budget-friendly, with some gently used models selling online for less than $10K.
Lightweight RVs, particularly those with solar capabilities, are easier to take with you to explore backroads and off-grid campsites.
If you're interested in learning more about lightweight RVs, the following campers can give you a glimpse into the world of small-scale but big-picture living.
Airstream Basecamps are one of the most attractive lightweight RVs on the market. According to Airstream's website, the Basecamp is made for 'those who want to see the world.'
And the basecamp is a tough little RV, too. Light filters into the RV through wrap-around windows, and an outdoor shower is ideal for those who want to thrive in nature without going full-scale hunter-gatherer.
The Basecamp is available in a 16'3″ or 20′ model. It is 7′ wide and 8'8″ tall and weighs 3,500 pounds before you fill it with your hiking and fishing gear. It also includes a 21-gallon freshwater tank and a 24-gallon graywater tank.
The 10′ version of the RV sleeps up to four people.
Prices on used Basecamps can be as inexpensive as $23K or as high as $73K, so do your homework before buying.
If you're looking to spend around $10K for a small, used RV, consider buying a Braxton Creek Bushwacker. Braxton Creek has been recently rebranded to Bontrager Outdoors, but it still has the same quality and adorability.
The Bushwacker series featured trailers 10-12′ long, which is perfect for vehicles with a lower towing capacity. The Bushwacker Plus trailers, however, were between 15 and 17′ feet long. Bontrager Outdoors will have new lightweight models available soon if you're only interested in purchasing a new RV, but the recent rebranding may be an excellent opportunity to score a good deal on lightly used Bushwackers.
It should be noted that Bushwacker RVs are small even by tiny-home standards.
Bushwacker models can weigh as little as 1300 pounds. And did we mention that used Bushwackers are budget-conscious?
Starcraft is owned by Thor Industries. Their 19BH model weighs less than 3500 pounds, sleeps four, and costs around $20K new.
You can buy a gently used Autumn Ridge for under $15K, and the new base models start off at the same price. They weigh around 3,000 pounds.
If you're looking for a Texas-made, lightweight RV, the Casita might be just the camper for you.
The ultra-lightweight and water-resistant fiberglass body has helped the company develop a cult following, and the high resale prices prove that investing in a Casita may be wise.
At the time of this article's publication, a used 2021 Heritage Deluxe Casita was listed on rvtrader.com for $28K, while a new Casita Independence (2025 model) was available for $26K. Even a 2018 Casita had an asking price of $24K.
So yes, Casita's hold their value.
Casitas weigh less than 2500 pounds and have a maximum capacity of 2-3 people.
And did we mention that they're manufactured in Rice, Texas?
Sales prices are as low as $14K for the 2025 Forest River Cherokee Wolf Pup 17EV, which compares to the 2025 Keystone Coleman 13B that lists for $10K. And yes, they're both brand new.
The Coleman weighs less than 2500 pounds, while the Wolf Pup weighs around 3000 pounds. They are bare-bones basic, but if you're planning to spend most of your time outdoors while you're camping, these basic campers are a bargain.
If you're ready to sell it all and live a bigger version of tiny, why not consider a destination trailer? These RVs are surprisingly posh, with two-story options available, and they're not that expensive when compared to high-end tiny homes.
Destination Trailers are meant to give their owners the ability to live their RV life in a more residential home-styled design.
Check out this brand new Forest River Salem Villa Grand 42View if you want to completely rethink everything you thought you knew about tiny houses and RVs. But don't get too attached if you're on a super tight budget, though, because this bad boy lists at just over $80K and weighs in at more than 13000 pounds before you load it down with hiking boots, bicycles, groceries, and your husband's baseball card collection that he refuses to part with as you're downsizing.

Flight passengers complain about maskless coughing on planes as summer travel heats up

As summer travel kicks off, many Americans are taking to the skies to reach their destination. One traveler is sounding off about the passing around of summer sicknesses, calling out "sick people" with "no masks" — and igniting plenty of debate and input from others. Posted in the "r/delta" forum on Reddit, the message reads, "Currently on a plane, and one of the guys in the row behind me is absolutely hacking up a lung with no mask." "I've had this happen quite often recently. These people are totally inconsiderate scummy individuals. We are all in super-close quarters on flights — just wear a freaking mask," the user writes. Redditors took to the comments section to discuss the issue of flight passengers wearing masks on board. "I have lung disease and occasionally I get a coughing fit. I'm not sick or contagious. Could be the case here," suggested one user. Another user wrote, "You're never going to get the U.S. to adopt a mindset that widely encompasses masks. You just aren't. And the thing is, prior to 2020 you would likely not have thought of masking for someone coughing either." "This is why I always wear a mask on planes because I can't control if other people wear them," commented a Redditor. "I don't trust others to have common sense." One user said, "I carry a mask and wash my hands before (and after) I use the bathroom. I don't trust others to have common sense or minimal decency." Another person said, "If you go out in public, there will be germs. Accept it. Move on. Protect yourself however you wish. Or stay home." Another comment read, "Keep your mask on. Take an airborne or other Vitamin C pill. More than likely you won't get sick. Relax and move on. You cannot do anything." Recirculated air passes through high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters that capture 99.97% of particles such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi ≥0.3 µm in diameter, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The agency says that wearing a "high-quality" and "well-fitting mask" can be "effective in reducing the transmission of respiratory pathogens." "Close proximity of passengers increases the risk of person-to-person airborne spread before contaminated air can be removed from the breathing zone and exhausted or filtered," the CDC notes. Wearing a mask can be especially helpful during the boarding and deplaning process.

Hiker Gets Back to Car Without Keys—Video Reveals What Really Happened

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A video about a hiker's unfortunate realization after losing some car keys during a hike in the United Kingdom has gone viral on TikTok. The clip was posted by Jazelle (@jazelleberryx) and has garnered over 451,000 views since it was shared on June 2. The video shows a man walking down some steps against the scenic backdrop of a sprawling outdoor landscape. The man is on the Cuilcagh Boardwalk Trail, also known as the "Stairway to Heaven," in Northern Ireland, according to a hashtag shared with the caption of the post. The caption says: "When you can't find your keys back in the car park and that night you look at the video to see this." The footage features the hiker merrily hopping down the steps. A closer shot of him later reveals his keys had fallen out of his pocket while walking down the trail. The viral post comes after over 61 million people in the United States were reported to have engaged in hiking activities at least once in 2023. This was the highest number recorded in the U.S. since 2010, marking a growth of around 89 percent from the figure reported that year, according to data compiled by Statista, the global data firm. Participation in outdoor recreation rose by 26 percent during the pandemic, with people looking for safe, socially distant ways to stay active and connect with nature, according to the Outdoor Industry Association (OIA). By 2021, more than 164 million Americans aged six and older were reported to have participated in outdoor recreation at least once, the highest number on record, according to the OIA. However, "despite increases in the number of participants, total outdoor outings are declining significantly," the OIA noted, adding that "outings have been in decline for the past decade and the increased number of participants are not stemming the tide." 'I Feel Your Pain' Viewers on TikTok were sympathetic towards the hiker's dilemma, with some highlighting the silver linings to it. Naomi McCartney simply said: "Oh no!" and user irish#astard wrote: "I feel your pain." Iris Black noted: "awe jez imagine walking the whole way back to the car park and realizing this." Eroberer said: "At least you know where they are." Rachael Harrison noted: "So the lost keys are no longer a winning situation for me." Newsweek has contacted the original poster for comment via TikTok and email. This video has not been independently verified. Elon Musk Urges Americans Take Action to ‘Kill' Trump Tax Cut Bill

(Bloomberg) -- Elon Musk is on a mission to block President Donald Trump's tax bill after he tried — and failed — to convince Republican lawmakers to preserve valuable tax credits for electric vehicles in the legislation, according to a person familiar with the matter. ICE Moves to DNA-Test Families Targeted for Deportation with New Contract The Global Struggle to Build Safer Cars NYC Residents Want Safer Streets, Cheaper Housing, Survey Says The Buffalo Architect Fighting for Women in Design The Tesla Inc. chief executive officer personally appealed to House Speaker Mike Johnson to save the tax credit, the person said, requesting anonymity to discuss a private conversation. The House version of the tax measure calls for largely ending the popular $7,500 electric car subsidies by the end of 2025 that Tesla has benefited from for years. Since losing that battle, Musk ratcheted up his offensive against the president's signature legislation on Wednesday, urging that Americans contact their lawmakers to 'KILL' the legislation, pinning his opposition to the bill's $2.4 trillion price tag. 'Call your Senator, Call your Congressman,' Musk wrote in a social media post. 'Bankrupting America is NOT ok!' The post came one day after Musk lashed out at the tax bill, describing it as a budget-busting 'disgusting abomination' as Republican fiscal hawks stepped up criticism of the massive fiscal package. Musk did not respond to a request for comment. NBC News reported earlier on Musk's overture to Johnson. The billionaire has also publicly railed against 'abruptly ending' the US's energy tax credits, which the EV maker has gained from over the last few years. Many congressional Republicans have pushed for the rollback of certain clean energy and solar tax credits as a way to minimize the impacts of the tax and spending bill. Last month, Tesla said in a post on X that 'Abruptly ending the energy tax credits would threaten America's energy independence and the reliability of our grid.' Representative Thomas Massie, a Kentucky Republican who voted against the measure, defended Musk, saying in a post on X: 'He knows if America collapses financially, we aren't making it to Mars. He's right.' Trump hasn't publicly responded to Musk's comments, but the White House put out a statement Wednesday saying the legislation 'unleashes an era of unprecedented economic growth.' Tensions between Musk and the White House have flared in recent days after the tech titan formally stepped down from his role leading Trump's federal cost-cutting effort, the Department of Government Efficiency. After a meeting with Trump and Republican senators at the White House on Wednesday evening, Senator Roger Marshall of Kansas told Bloomberg Television that 'Elon was not important at all as far as this conversation goes.' Earlier, Johnson told reporters that Musk was 'dead wrong' about the bill and that the tax cuts would pay for themselves through economic growth. Musk's public condemnation pits him against the president at a critical time as Trump is personally lobbying holdouts on the bill. His campaign against the legislation threatens to stiffen resistance and delay enactment of the tax cuts and debt ceiling increase. Musk has attacked the legislation days after leaving a temporary assignment leading the administration's Department of Government Efficiency initiative to cut federal spending. The Tesla Inc. chief executive officer's high-profile role in the Trump administration eroded his business brand and sales of his company's electric vehicles plunged. The House-passed version of the tax and spending bill would add $2.4 trillion to US budget deficits over the next decade, according to an estimate released Wednesday from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. The CBO's calculation reflects a $3.67 trillion decrease in expected revenues and a $1.25 trillion decline in spending over the decade through 2034, relative to baseline projections. The score doesn't account for any potential boost to the economy from the bill, which Johnson and Trump argue would offset the revenue losses. Johnson said Musk had promised to help reelect Republicans just a day before savaging Trump's bill, adding that he did not want to ascribe a personal motive. Musk did not respond to a request for comment. Separately, Jared Isaacman, a financial technology billionaire, appeared to suggest Trump withdrew his nomination to run NASA because of his close ties to Musk. 'There were some people that had some axes to grind, I guess, and I was a good visible target,' Isaacman said on an episode of the All-In Podcast released on Wednesday. His ouster was driven by Sergio Gor, the head of the White House Presidential Personnel Office, according to people familiar with the matter. Gor and Musk had butted heads during the billionaire's tenure running the Department of Government Efficiency, the people said, and Gor moved to have Isaacman's nomination withdrawn after Musk pulled back from the administration. A White House spokesperson said Trump ultimately makes the decisions regarding who will serve in his administration. Musk, the world's richest man with a net worth of about $377 billion according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, has become a crucial financial backer of the Republican party. After making modest donations most years, Musk became the biggest US political donor in 2024, giving more than $290 million. Most of Musk's political giving was aimed at electing Trump but he also supported congressional candidates. America PAC, the super political action committee that Musk largely funded, spent $18.5 million in 17 separate House races. Though that total pales in comparison to the roughly $255 million he spent backing Trump, the spending means a lot in a congressional election, where challengers on average raise less than $1 million. Control of the House will likely be decided by the outcome of fewer than two dozen close races in the 2026 midterm elections. The GOP's chances of holding their majority would suffer a major blow if Musk were to withdraw his financial support. --With assistance from Bill Allison, Kailey Leinz, Joe Mathieu and Ari Natter.
