St. Thomas Aquinas barrels its way into the Class 6A state baseball final

Miami Herald16-05-2025

Teams can sometimes succumb to jitters when it's their first time playing at the state final four.
Not St. Thomas Aquinas' baseball team.
The Raiders were itching to get on the field Friday at Hammond Stadium.
And when they did, they barely stopped hitting.
Aquinas unleashed an offensive barrage in its first trip to state since last winning a championship in 2018, and routed Valrico Bloomingdale 15-0 in four innings in a Class 6A semifinal.
The Raiders (28-6-1) will next take on Gainesville Buchholz in the 6A state championship game on Saturday at 2. Aquinas is seeking its fourth state title all-time.
'We looked to this game with anticipation,' Aquinas coach Joey Wardlow said. 'We had a long last week after that regional final and during the week as we ramped up, we could feel the adrenaline.
'When we stepped out in that first inning, it went well on defense and well on offense and it took away any jitters we might have had.'
Junior center fielder Nico Sabatino was the tone-setter for the onslaught, roping a leadoff double to left off Bloomingdale starter Hayden Porter to start a five-run first inning.
Sabatino would later hit his eighth home run of the season on a solo blast to right field.
'My job is to get the team going,' Sabatino said. 'I saw that fastball and I took it. I was just in that flow state and now the offense is ready to go.'
Aquinas' power was a major reason it made it to Fort Myers this season as it hit 67 home runs entering the state final four.
'We kind of look at baserunners and barrels,' Wardlow said. 'If we get baserunners, somebody is gonna barrel up a ball. If they stay in the middle, they'll open it up. If we can get out front and just stack up one and another, we can hold teams down.'
Cole Lasher, who has seven homers this season, went 2 for 2 with a double and three RBI.
Andrew Alvarez, who has 13 home runs, went 3 for 3 with two doubles and two RBI.
And Zack Malvasio, who has hit a team-high 16 home runs, went 2 for 4 with two RBI.
'We just had to put it on them early and not let up,' Alvarez said. 'We had to keep that type of energy and not let up.'
Senior Thomas Giltner did the rest as he gave up two hits over four shutout innings and struck out two, sparing Aquinas from having to use any more pitchers before Saturday's final.

Former Raiders GM Makes Admission About Jayden Daniels, Bo Nix

Former Raiders GM Makes Admission About Jayden Daniels, Bo Nix originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Las Vegas Raiders hired Pete Carroll and John Spytek to lead the franchise this offseason, which marks the third straight year that the team has both a new head coach and general manager. Advertisement Antonio Pierce and Tom Telesco only got one year at the helm of the Silver and Black, and while the results were disastrous, Telesco actually added several solid pieces to the roster. In the first three rounds of the 2024 NFL Draft, he grabbed First-Team All-Pro tight end Brock Bowers, All-Rookie lineman Jackson Powers-Johnson, and starting right tackle DJ Glaze. Unfortunately, Telesco was still fired this offseason after a four-win campaign in 2024. Denver Broncos QB Bo Nix (10) and former Las Vegas Raiders RB Ameer Abdullah (8).Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images Many wanted the Raiders to be aggressive and target a quarterback of the future in last year's draft. Telesco was quite selective, however, which netted them Bowers in the first round and no young signal-callers to show for it. Advertisement His failure to grab a quarterback was not entirely in his control, however. Telesco was featured on an episode of "Check the Mic" on Thursday, and he talked about both Jayden Daniels and Bo Nix. 'Other than Jayden Daniels, (trading up for a QB) was a non-starter," Telesco said. "Bo Nix, his background of work, his durability, his movement skills, that would've been a good possibility (at 13)." Unfortunately, the Raiders' roster was not in a position to trade up for Daniels, and the Commanders did not want to move back anyway. Nix also came off the board just one pick ahead of Las Vegas, when their AFC West rival, the Denver Broncos, selected him at No. 12 overall. Both players had strong rookie seasons, as Daniels led the Commanders to the NFC Championship Game and won the 2025 NFL Rookie of the Year Award. Nix also led the Broncos to 10 wins and finished third in the Rookie of the Year award voting, behind Daniels and Bowers. Advertisement Ultimately, this is water under the bridge considering Telesco is now out of a job and there is a new regime in place in Las Vegas. However, Raider Nation cannot help but imagine what could have been if things went a bit differently in the 2024 NFL Draft. Raiders Reportedly Using Ashton Jeanty in Unique Role at OTAs

Raiders Reportedly Using Ashton Jeanty in Unique Role at OTAs originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Las Vegas Raiders had the worst rushing attack in the league during the 2024 NFL season. Led by Zamir White and Alexander Mattison, the Silver and Black mustered a league-low 79.8 yards per game on the ground. Advertisement After winning just four games last season, in large part due to the team's lack of ground success, owner Mark Davis cleaned house this offseason. Davis hired Pete Carroll and John Spytek to be the team's next head coach and general manager. Their first draft selection was Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty, who comes to Las Vegas after a 2,601-yard, 29-touchdown campaign at Boise State. He and new offensive coordinator Chip Kelly will be tasked with reviving the Raiders' rushing attack in 2025. Las Vegas Raiders RB Ashton Jeanty (2).Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images Many expect Jeanty to be the workhorse back for the Raiders immediately as a rookie. While that is certainly shaping up to be the case, reporter Levi Edwards added that Jeanty has been utilized in a unique role during the team's OTAs. Advertisement "It seems Kelly is placing Jeanty all over the field, giving him more opportunities to get the ball in open space in last week's practices," Edwards wrote. "This included screen passes and getting the ball to the running back out in the flat." Las Vegas added veteran Raheem Mostert during free agency, who led the NFL in rushing touchdowns during the 2023 season. But it seems that the new brass is investing heavily in their No. 6 overall pick instead of using a committee approach. Jeanty was a slot receiver for a season in high school, and he showed off his pass-catching prowess during his second season at Boise State. During that year, he caught 43 passes for 569 yards and five touchdowns. Any way that Kelly and the Las Vegas staff can get the ball into Jeanty's hands is sure to help the Raiders' offense. With a solid passing attack led by Geno Smith, Brock Bowers and Jakobi Meyers, Jeanty's running ability should keep defenses honest. Advertisement However, if he is going to be used a pass-catching threat as well, then this could cause headaches for opposing defensive coordinators. It has been a long time since Las Vegas has had a high-end dual-threat running back, but it already appears that they have one in Ashton Jeanty.
