Alonso says Aston Martin's big bet on 2026 F1 season will weigh heavily on his driving future

Alonso says Aston Martin's big bet on 2026 F1 season will weigh heavily on his driving future

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Fernando Alonso says that Aston Martin's all-in bet on next season will play a large part on the looming decision of when he definitely calls it quits from Formula 1.
'It will be very important,' Alonso told reporters on Thursday ahead of the
Spanish Grand Prix
. 'I need to see how motivated I am.
'Every year has its own mood and feeling, how competitive and motivated you are to keep your fitness at a high level,' he said. 'Your personal and family situations, all these things play a role. I know that very important decisions will come when I stop racing.'
After winning two F1 titles back in 2005 and 2006, Alonso eventually stepped away from F1 in 2018 when his stint with Ferrari failed to deliver more successes. Seeking new challenges, the Spaniard tried his hand at the
24 Hours Le Mans
,
Indy 500
and the Dakar rally race, only
to return
to F1 in 2021.
'For 40 years I have had a steering wheel in my hand and I know that one day I will have to stop,' Alonso said. 'I did stop F1 once in 2018 and I did come back because I needed it, and the next time I do that I will have to be sure.'
The former Renault champion is enduring one of the worst seasons of his long and topsy turvy career. He has failed to finish three races, including
last weekend's Monaco GP
, and has yet to finish in the top 10. The last time he failed to score a point through the first eight races was 2015.
The context matters, however, and Alonso and his Aston Martin team lowered expectations from the start of the season. They are all concentrated on working with former Red Bull top designer
Adrian Newey
to put all their energies into making a good car under the rule changes coming for 2026.
But sacrificing a year is a big ask for a driver who turns 44 in July and has little tolerance for teams that don't give him a competitive car.
The last time Alonso won an F1 race, he did so right here on the same track back in 2013 with Ferrari when he claimed victory No. 32. He also won the Spanish GP in 2006 with Renault.
Aston Martin had given him a good car in 2023, when he arrived to the Spanish GP with hopes of winning that allusive 33rd race, but
it was not to be
. This time he realistically is just hoping to be in the points with his green car struggling and McLaren and Red Bull far, far ahead.
That said, this year can't be a total wash, according to Alonso.
'The focus is on 2026, but in order to be confident with 2026 you have to build momentum in 2025 and deliver some parts on track to make the car faster,' Alonso said. 'The biggest steps can only happen in 2026. That is where the hopes are.'

Oscar Piastri's telling comments about rival as Aussie clings to slim F1 lead

Oscar Piastri has topped the practice session in Barcelona after his setback in Monte Carlo but admitted Red Bull rival Max Verstappen is looking fast ahead of the Spanish GP. Piastri would have been disappointed having watched his lead cut to just three points lat week with McLaren teammate Norris closing the gap. However, Piastri laid down the marker on Friday setting a quickest time of 1 minute 12.760 seconds to eclipse Norris. His McLaren teammate had earlier set a best of 1:13.718 in first practice. Verstappen is heading into the Spanish GP as last year's winner and was second and third respectively in the sessions. However, Piastri had an eye on Red Bull's car having admitted they look extremely dangerous in Barcelona. 'Our competitors look quick,' Piastri said. 'I think Verstappen's been quick all day. It's going to be a tight battle tomorrow, I think. I think we definitely expected Red Bull to be quick, so that's not a big surprise. We're just trying to make the car a bit faster.' And in telling signs, Verstappen was upbeat after the practice session and felt Red Bull had more to add for qualifying. 'We've had worse Fridays!' he said. 'I felt a bit happier with the car. 'We're still not I think where we want to be, but it's definitely a bit more positive. I still want a better feeling from the car, but I've also had Fridays where we were completely out of it. it's a bit more in the middle.' Teams are practicing with the new front wings introduced for the Spanish GP. However, Red Bull boss Christian Horner feels it's not making a big difference. "I think it's going to take more than one session to see if there is an impact. Or if so, how it's affected the different cars," said the Red Bull team boss. "It didn't sound from the drivers' comments too different to a normal Friday." Horner also addressed McLaren's two drivers who are leading the standings. "You have got to say that McLaren have to be favourite, they have looked incredibly strong throughout the early races," he said. "We have got to make sure to keep in touch, and to beat them you have to start taking points off them." Lewis Hamilton was one of the most frustrated drivers of the day having finished in 11th place ahead of qualifying. Hamilton didn't show any enthusiasm having suggested it was a disappointing result. 'Not fun,' he said. 'You arrive on a Friday and you're hoping for a good day, but then it doesn't go well … honestly, I thought the car was going to be good today. It wasn't too bad in FP1, but in FP2 it was quite a lot worse. Naturally that's frustrating for everyone.' His teammate, Charles Leclerc finished in fifth and showed more optimism heading into the weekend. 'It's been a bit more positive than what we expected coming here, so that's good,' he said. 'There's more performance in the car, which I hope we will unlock tomorrow for quali. There's still quite a bit of work to be done, but I don't think we are too far out.'

Ohtani outduels Judge with 2 homers and the Dodgers rally to beat the Yankees 8-5

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Shohei Ohtani hit two home runs, including a solo shot leading off a four-run sixth inning when the Dodgers rallied to take the lead, and Los Angeles defeated the New York Yankees 8-5 in their World Series rematch on Friday night. Aaron Judge and Ohtani became the first reigning MVPs to homer in the first inning of a game. Judge's 19th homer of the season traveled 446 feet into dead center off Tony Gonsolin (3-1). Ohtani answered with a 417-foot shot on his first pitch from Max Fried. Advertisement Austin Wells homered and Trent Grisham added a two-run shot in the second, giving New York a 4-1 lead. Paul Goldschmidt, another former MVP, homered leading off the third, making it 5-2. But just like in Game 5 of last year's World Series, the Yankees blew the lead. Ohtani's homer keyed the offense in the sixth, when the Dodgers batted around. Teoscar Hernández and Will Smith singled before Freddie Freeman's RBI double chased Fried. Andy Pages followed with a game-tying RBI single off Jonathan Loáisiga (0-1). With the bases loaded, Tim Hill walked Michael Conforto on six pitches, forcing in Pages with the go-ahead run to make it 6-5. Advertisement The Dodgers tacked on two more in the seventh. Will Smith singled, Freeman doubled and both scored on Pages' two-run single off Yerry De Los Santos. Freeman was safe in a close play at the plate after he made a wide turn into the grass coming around third. Alex Vesia pitched the ninth to earn his second save. The teams were meeting for the first time since the Dodgers beat the Yankees to win their eighth world championship. Key moment Dodgers reliever Tanner Scott came on with runners at the corners in the eighth and retired pinch-hitter DJ LeMahieu on a flyout to center for the third out. Scott has been rocky lately with blown saves. Advertisement Key stat Gonsolin gave up four homers, one shy of his team record set on Aug. 18, 2023, against Florida. Up next Yankees RHP Will Warren (3-2, 4.09 ERA) starts Saturday against Dodgers RHP Landon Knack (2-2, 5.22). ___ AP MLB: Beth Harris, The Associated Press
