Markwood played football for the South Allegheny Gladiators and, during his senior year, was named team MVP.
Upon graduating, he went on to play football at Walsh University in Ohio, and in 2023, he transferred to Wheeling University in West Virginia, where he appeared in five of the team's 11 games as a linebacker.
In response to the incident, team Chairman Bob Nutting said the Pirates community is 'deeply saddened and truly heartbroken.'
'It was one of the most difficult moments many of us have ever experienced,' Nutting
'In times like these, we must come together, support one another, and keep him and his loved ones in our prayers.
'We also want to thank and appreciate the efforts of the first responders who rushed to Markwood's attention and provided him with compassionate care.'

In a recent interview with The Athletic, Sanders said that he had no idea the heart attack was coming. As a former athlete who worked out consistently and stayed in shape, he was not aware of other factors or habits that could have led to the cardiovascular event. Even when he had suffered the heart attack, he was not aware it had happened. Sanders told The Athletic that it felt like a similar sensation to heartburn, but he eventually drove himself to the emergency room when it wouldn't go away. Sanders said his goal with this new documentary is to educate more people about the potential risks that can lead to – and the warnings that precede – heart attacks. He also wanted to explore why "the system, including healthcare professionals and patients, aren't catching the signs early enough." With the offseason arrival of Bill Belichick as UNC's next head football coach, football recruits – both in the transfer portal and those still in high school – are taking notice of Chapel Hill. North Carolina shaped its 2025 roster primarily through the portal, adding the likes of top-ranked transfers Thaddeus Dixon and Gio Lopez. The Tar Heels also solidified their 2025 recruiting class with commitments from a pair of 4-stars: in-state quarterback Bryce Baker and South Carolina running back Jaylen McGrill. Russell Westbrook declines player option with Nuggets, will become free agent: Report
Russell Westbrook has declined his player option for next season with the Denver Nuggets, and will become an unrestricted free agent on June 30, according to Marc Stein. Westbrook's player option was worth $3.5 million. The nine-time All-Star spent just one season with the Nuggets, playing in 75 games and averaging 13.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game.
