Rugby sevens given reality check as Ireland disbands its men's team

The World Rugby Sevens Series has received a blow with news that the Irish union has decided to discontinue its men's programme at the end of this season.

The decision followed a review after last year's Olympics, and was 'part of a broader strategic effort to ensure long-term financial sustainability and focus on key initiatives', the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) said.
It came after the release last November of its financial results, which showed an €18 million (US$20.2 million) deficit for the 2023-24 season.
The union said it had found that the men's sevens programme did not contribute as a development pathway for the 15-a-side game, with current academy structures in the provinces offering greater opportunities on that front.
However, the IRFU confirmed that the women's sevens programme would remain in place as a development pathway for the women's 15s team.

Earlier this month, global governing body World Rugby announced plans to slash the number of teams in the elite sevens series to just eight, from 12 previously and from 16 before that. Its plans also included the creation of a second and third division.

Welcome to Wrexham, that'll be US$475 million please. Hollywood pair looking to cash in

Wrexham AFC, the Welsh football club co-owned by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, are reportedly looking to sell a stake in the team that would set the franchise's valuation at US$475 million. Sources said the club was looking for an investor to join the Hollywood stars, who bought Wrexham for US$2.5 million in late 2020. Since then, the team have become the subject of a popular documentary series on FX – Welcome to Wrexham – and have earned promotion through England's system for a record three straight years. Internal talks were focused on how to raise capital to help Wrexham compete in the Championship next season, one step below the Premier League, with the latter arguably the top football league in the world. The projected value would represent a nearly 19,000 per cent jump in the team's worth in less than five years. Rob McElhenney (left) and Ryan Reynolds bought Wrexham in late 2020. Saudi clubs reportedly chasing Son Heung-min, but Spurs want ‘significant fee' for skipper

Son Heung-min could leave Tottenham this summer and is a target for clubs in the Saudi Pro League, according to various reports in the British media. Having failed to land No 1 target Bruno Fernandes, Al-Hilal remain in the market for attacking players and would likely be among the front runners to sign the South Korea captain. The Telegraph report Son is of interest to clubs in the Saudi Pro League, while PA suggested Spurs would only allow their skipper to leave should they receive a significant fee. Son was linked with a move to Saudi Arabia two years ago but rejected advances to stick around for the start of Ange Postecoglou's tenure. Postecoglou subsequently named Son as Spurs captain and last month the South Korean forward led the team to Europa League success to claim his first piece of silverware with the club. Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes turned down a move to Al-Hilal. Photo: Reuters Speculation over Son's future has been rife during his 10th season at Tottenham and whilst the club triggered a 12-month option in his deal in January, he is set to enter the final year of his contract in July.
