Pelicans F Trey Murphy III (shoulder) out for season
March 18 - New Orleans forward Trey Murphy III is out for the season after sustaining a right shoulder injury in the Pelicans' 127-81 home loss to the Detroit Pistons on Monday.
According to the team, Murphy underwent an MRI exam that confirmed a labrum tear and partial rotator cuff tear.
In the first minute of the game, Detroit's Ausar Thompson stole the ball from Murphy, and the two collided as Thompson headed toward the opposite basket. Murphy went down to the floor in pain and left the contest for good.
Murphy, 24, averaged 21.2 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.5 assists, all career highs, in 53 games (51 starts).
In four NBA seasons, all with New Orleans, Murphy is averaging 13.7 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 251 games (140 games).
When he returns next season, Murphy will start playing under a four-year, $112 million contract extension he received in October.
The Pelicans, who were eliminated from playoff contention last week, endured an awful night after Murphy exited. The margin of defeat matched the largest in franchise history.

Formal response just what Balding hoped for
Winner of her first two starts for the now retired Sir Michael Stoute, she is now with Andrew Balding but disappointed first time out for her new yard in the Fred Darling at Newbury. Supported into 9-4 joint-favouritism, Oisin Murphy tracked The Waco Kid until breezing to the front early in the straight, beating Saqqara Sands by a length and a half. 'I thought she ran well in the Fred Darling, but it was a funny race and she got impeded at a vital stage and didn't give her true running,' said Balding. 'It made our decision easy and we skipped any idea of a Guineas and rebooted and this became the obvious choice. It's a relief to see her win like that. 'She had been quite keen early doors at home and her work is very good at home, but we thought now she had the first run under her belt we would take the hood off. She travelled really strongly but didn't over-race.' He added: 'I think we'll probably wait for something like the Oak Tree (at Goodwood, July 30). I don't think we want to be squeezing races into her and that looks the right spot. After that we know she goes well on slow ground so we would have the whole autumn ahead of us. 'She looked quite good there, but we will take it step by step.' Richard Fahey's Ecureuil Secret turned the Betfred Nifty 50 Handicap into a procession under Oisin Orr. Sent off a 28-1 chance, the former Edward O'Grady inmate came home four lengths clear of the pack. 'When I saw what price he was I thought I must be doing something wrong, but the form was in the book,' said Fahey. 'He's a huge horse and he's only going to improve. The plan was a run before going for the Wolferton at Royal Ascot and this was the only race I could find.' Murphy made it a double on the day when he teamed up with David O'Meara's Mirsky to win the Trustatrader Handicap by a length and three-quarters. Sent off the 9-4 favourite having won at Thirsk last time out, the result never looked in any doubt. 'David O'Meara often gives me winners and I'm very pleased with this lad,' said Murphy. 'I took a pull to allow Flight Plan to go on and it meant I was able to give my lad an easier time of it.' David Loughnane's Partisan Hero (7-2) made all the running under Silvestre de Sousa to deny Fahey and Orr a big-priced double with Golden Mind in the Debenhams Handicap.

Retired Derek Carr: Didn't want to 'just take the Saints money'
June 5 - Derek Carr announced his retirement last month, a decision that saw him forgo $30 million by opting against shoulder surgery. Had he gone under the knife, the veteran quarterback still would have been paid by the New Orleans Saints despite being sidelined for the duration of the 2025 season. "That part was tough because I didn't want to have surgery and just sit there and -- it sounds crazy but -- just take the Saints' money," Carr told Front Office Sports in a story published on Wednesday. "I wouldn't have been able to play if I had the surgery. And then if I tried to play with it, I wasn't near 100 percent, and so that doesn't help them, either. I just felt like it was the right thing to do for myself and for the team." The Saints disclosed that Carr had a labral tear and "significant degenerative changes to his rotator cuff." Carr, 34, signed a four-year, $150 million contract with New Orleans in 2023. "I never played just for the money," he said. "I had a whole bunch of people tell me how crazy I was, and, 'Man, I would never have done that.' That's all cool, but I've gained all these things that the world has to offer, and it doesn't really do anything for your heart. I knew my heart was at peace, and that's really all that mattered." The Saints selected quarterback Tyler Shough in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft in April. They also have 2024 fifth-round pick Spencer Rattler and 2023 fourth-round selection Jake Haener on the roster. Carr was 14-13 as the starter in New Orleans over two seasons, although he was limited to 10 games in 2024 due to injuries. A four-time Pro Bowl selection, Carr threw for 41,245 yards and 257 touchdowns against 112 interceptions in 169 games for the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders (2014-22) and Saints. He was selected by the Raiders in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft out of Fresno State. --Field Level Media

Police reportedly find man responsible for McCullers death threats
McCullers claimed that he received the messages after the game, threatening to "find [his] kids and murder them." "I understand people are very passionate and people love the Astros and love sports, but threatening to find my kids and murder them is a little bit tough to deal with," McCullers told reporters. The Astros granted McCullers and his family 24-hour security, and finally, the man behind the threats has been discovered. ESPN reports that the Houston Police Department has identified the person behind the threats. The man in question has remained unnamed and is described as a sports bettor located overseas. A spokesperson for the department claimed that the man admitted to sending the messages after he had been gambling on an Astros game, and lost money. The man claims he was intoxicated. The spokesperson did add that the man has since relayed an apology to McCullers and his family. Charges are still being considered and the case remains open. MLB News: Diamondbacks' Corbin Burnes to undergo MRI on elbow after ominous early exit Noticeable uptick in death threats to MLB players "I think over the last few years it's definitely increased," Milwaukee's Christian Yelich said, via ESPN, in reference to the threats he's received. "It's increased to the point that you're just, 'All right, here we go.' It doesn't even really register on your radar anymore. I don't know if that's a good or a bad thing. You're just so used to that on a day-to-day, night-to-night basis. It's not just me. It's everybody in here, based on performance." Just last month, Boston Red Sox reliever Liam Hendriks revealed that he'd also received such threats. "Threats against my life and my wife's life are horrible and cruel," said Hendriks. "Comments telling me to commit suicide and how you wish I died from cancer is disgusting and vile. Maybe you should take a step back and re-evaluate your life's purpose before hiding behind a screen attacking players and their families." Sports betting's impact on threats In an interview with ESPN, head of integrity services and athlete well-being for MLB partner Sportradar, said that while the popularization of sports betting has certainly played a factor, these messages have been coming to athletes since long before gambling became so widespread. "It is broader than just sports betting," Brown claims. "Yes, sports betting is a factor, but we see it in all forms, whether racism, transphobia, doping, geopolitical, misogyny. The abuse is insane." Sports gambling is currently legal in 38 states in the U.S., with 30 states enabling gambling from a person's mobile phone. Keep in mind though, the person who sent the threats to McCullers was located overseas. MLB News: Royals call up minor league slugging sensation Jac Caglianone
