Pelicans F Trey Murphy III (shoulder) out for season
March 18 - New Orleans forward Trey Murphy III is out for the season after sustaining a right shoulder injury in the Pelicans' 127-81 home loss to the Detroit Pistons on Monday.
According to the team, Murphy underwent an MRI exam that confirmed a labrum tear and partial rotator cuff tear.
In the first minute of the game, Detroit's Ausar Thompson stole the ball from Murphy, and the two collided as Thompson headed toward the opposite basket. Murphy went down to the floor in pain and left the contest for good.
Murphy, 24, averaged 21.2 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.5 assists, all career highs, in 53 games (51 starts).
In four NBA seasons, all with New Orleans, Murphy is averaging 13.7 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 251 games (140 games).
When he returns next season, Murphy will start playing under a four-year, $112 million contract extension he received in October.
The Pelicans, who were eliminated from playoff contention last week, endured an awful night after Murphy exited. The margin of defeat matched the largest in franchise history.

June 5 - Derek Carr announced his retirement last month, a decision that saw him forgo $30 million by opting against shoulder surgery. Had he gone under the knife, the veteran quarterback still would have been paid by the New Orleans Saints despite being sidelined for the duration of the 2025 season. "That part was tough because I didn't want to have surgery and just sit there and -- it sounds crazy but -- just take the Saints' money," Carr told Front Office Sports in a story published on Wednesday. "I wouldn't have been able to play if I had the surgery. And then if I tried to play with it, I wasn't near 100 percent, and so that doesn't help them, either. I just felt like it was the right thing to do for myself and for the team." The Saints disclosed that Carr had a labral tear and "significant degenerative changes to his rotator cuff." Carr, 34, signed a four-year, $150 million contract with New Orleans in 2023. "I never played just for the money," he said. "I had a whole bunch of people tell me how crazy I was, and, 'Man, I would never have done that.' That's all cool, but I've gained all these things that the world has to offer, and it doesn't really do anything for your heart. I knew my heart was at peace, and that's really all that mattered." The Saints selected quarterback Tyler Shough in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft in April. They also have 2024 fifth-round pick Spencer Rattler and 2023 fourth-round selection Jake Haener on the roster. Carr was 14-13 as the starter in New Orleans over two seasons, although he was limited to 10 games in 2024 due to injuries. Police reportedly find man responsible for McCullers death threats
McCullers claimed that he received the messages after the game, threatening to "find [his] kids and murder them." "I understand people are very passionate and people love the Astros and love sports, but threatening to find my kids and murder them is a little bit tough to deal with," McCullers told reporters. The Astros granted McCullers and his family 24-hour security, and finally, the man behind the threats has been discovered. ESPN reports that the Houston Police Department has identified the person behind the threats. The man in question has remained unnamed and is described as a sports bettor located overseas. A spokesperson for the department claimed that the man admitted to sending the messages after he had been gambling on an Astros game, and lost money. The man claims he was intoxicated. The spokesperson did add that the man has since relayed an apology to McCullers and his family. Charges are still being considered and the case remains open. "It is broader than just sports betting," Brown claims. "Yes, sports betting is a factor, but we see it in all forms, whether racism, transphobia, doping, geopolitical, misogyny. The abuse is insane." Sports gambling is currently legal in 38 states in the U.S., with 30 states enabling gambling from a person's mobile phone.
