
‘Absolutely insane': Germany's second division outdraws La Liga, smashes €1b barrier
BERLIN, May 1 — Driven by huge crowds, unpredictable results and some of Germany's biggest clubs including Hamburg and Schalke, the Bundesliga 2 broke through the billion-euro revenue barrier last season to become Europe's wealthiest second division.
According to figures from the German Football Leagues (DFL), midway through the 2024-25 season, the second-tier average attendance of 30,329 was greater than the Spanish and French first divisions.
La Liga games averaged crowds of 29,875 with those in France's Ligue 1 attracting 27,173 spectators per game.
On one matchday in February 2024, the Bundesliga 2 averaged more fans than the German top flight — the best attended of any football league in the world — for the first time, a feat which has since been repeated on several occasions.
World Cup-winning striker Jurgen Klinsmann played 61 games in the German second division for Stuttgarter Kickers, scoring 22 times, before moving to first-division rivals Stuttgart.
Now living in California, Klinsmann still keeps up with the German second division, calling the atmosphere 'absolutely insane'.
'The second Bundesliga is really fun to watch,' Klinsmann told AFP from his Los Angeles home.
'I watch it quite a lot.'
'Completely unpredictable'
In the 2023-24 season, the total revenue of the 18-team Bundesliga 2 crossed the €1 billion (RM4.87 billion) mark for the first time, easily generating more money than any other second-division league.
The Championship, the 24-team English second tier, made £749 million in 2022-23, the last season for which figures are available.
With 947 goals scored last season in the German second division, the most in 22 years, fans get plenty of bang for their buck.
In the Bundesliga, Bayern are on course for their 12th title in the past 13 seasons. In the Bundesliga 2, there have been 10 different champions in the past decade.
Manu Veth, a Canadian-German journalist for Forbes and Transfermarkt, told AFP 'the football is very good and the league is completely unpredictable,' but also cited structural factors in football-mad Germany.
'Germany is Europe's most populous country with the largest economy by a big margin. With just 18 clubs (in the top flight), big clubs from major cities are stuck in the lower divisions.'
Hamburg and Schalke are joined in the second division by Cologne, Nuremberg, Kaiserslautern, Hertha Berlin, Hannover and Fortuna Duesseldorf — all former German champions who retain huge followings despite falling on harder times.
David Wagner, who coached Norwich City to a Premier League promotion as well as German giants Schalke, said the big names have boosted the second division's popularity.
'We've had a Bundesliga 2 season which perhaps we've never had before,' Wagner told AFP. 'With so many big, big clubs.'
'Enjoy the ride'
Klinsmann said fan loyalty among relegated clubs was also a major factor.
'Over the past 10 years, the second league became so interesting and so popular. You have these traditional powerhouses, who for whatever reasons got relegated, which of course is a disaster for them.
'But they have a fan base from over 100 years who sticks with them and is there for them. The identification with the teams is still so high, that fans just kind of enjoy the ride in the second Bundesliga.'
Klinsmann, who also played in England, Italy, France and the United States, said the culture was unique in Germany.
'I compare it to the Serie B, the Italian second league, because my son (Jonathan) plays for Cesena,' he said.
'They also have bigger teams who were in the first (division), but they don't have that fascinating aspect that the stadiums are packed still even if they're one league lower.
'But in Germany, the phenomenon is that even if you get relegated, the fans stick with them.'
Veth agreed.
'Fans in Germany are very loyal and they seem to come out in big numbers when clubs need them,' he said.
'Clubs are community or membership owned. That means they are embedded in the local communities and that creates momentum when times are tough.' — AFP

STUTTGART, Germany: Kylian Mbappe bagged a goal and an assist as France beat Germany 2-0 in the Nations League bronze-medal match in Stuttgart on Sunday. Mbappe wove his magic in a heavily changed France squad. Germany dominated the opening half but Mbappe provided the breakthrough just before half-time, carving a shot through a crowded penalty box to bring up his 50th goal in France colours. Late in the second, with the hosts desperately looking for an equaliser, Mbappe snatched a poor Germany pass on the half-way line and rampaged forward, before setting up Michael Olise. The French showed their incredible depth, while Mbappe again demonstrated his finishing and pace. For Germany, who lost two straight straight matches for the first time since 2023, questions remain over how much they have truly improved under Julian Nagelsmann. Unifor members at DHL Express Canada locked out after refusing to accept concessions
TORONTO, June 8, 2025 /CNW/ – Unifor members at DHL Express Canada were locked out by their employer after midnight on June 8, after the workers refused to accept concessions put forth by the company. 'We will not stand by while DHL locks out our members across the country and threatens to use scabs in an attempt to pressure our members to take concessions. Our members deserve respect and a fair contract,' said Unifor National President Lana Payne. 'We expect DHL to abide by the law on the books, passed unanimously by Parliament, which will come fully into force later this month. A law that bans the use of replacement works in a legal dispute. It is reprehensible that this company thinks they can bust our members' right to fair and free collective bargaining by using scab labour.' Some concessions the company is pushing include change driver pay system resulting in a loss of money, driving 100 km. to get to their routes or pick up their freight with no compensation. Other concessions involve proposing language that will allow the company to refuse accommodation, laying off employees, and proposing reducing drivers' daily guarantee. The company has also rerouted pickups across the whole country while reducing pay for owner operators. Hours before the deadline, the employer added numerous new proposals and concessions. The union's bargaining priorities remain improving working conditions—including access to clean and secure washrooms—securing fair wages, addressing surveillance and automation issues and recognition and respect for workers. The company filed its intention to lock out workers on June 4 – four days before the deadline to reach an agreement. 'By imposing a lockout, DHL is choosing confrontation over negotiation,' said Unifor Quebec Director Daniel Cloutier. 'This is a serious decision that deprives dedicated workers of their livelihoods. But let's be clear: our members will not be intimidated. They are united, standing strong, and determined to obtain the respect and working conditions they deserve.' Unifor DHL members voted 97% for strike action if necessary last month. Unifor represents over 2,100 DHL Express Canada workers who as truck drivers, couriers, warehouse and clerical workers across Canada, at Locals 114 in British Columbia, 700 in Quebec, 755 in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, 4005 in Nova Scotia, 4457 in Ontario and members in DHL Alberta. Unifor's legal department sent a letter to DHL, cautioning them of hiring scabs –– as anti-scab legislation, which the union campaigned diligently for, is set to come in on June 20. The union firmly believes the timing of the lockout notice is tied to the incoming legislation. The German-based parcel delivery giant's annual profit is roughly $3.3 billion Euro ($4.6 billion CDN) and revenue from its significant and growing North American enterprise is worth approximately ($9.4 billion CDN). And yet, the employer is demanding changes and concessions to working conditions that will negatively affect the pay of Unifor DHL members. Customers in Canada will likely be affected if they use other couriers, including UPS and Loomis, because of integrated contracts with other freight companies. DHL Express Canada has 50,000 customers, including Temu, SHEIN, Lululemon and Siemens Canada. The labour dispute could also potentially cause major disruptions to the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, June 13 to 15, due to DHL's responsibility for transporting Formula One vehicles. Unifor is Canada's largest union in the private sector, representing 320,000 workers in every major area of the economy.
