Habitat for Humanity Williamson-Maury nets $46,500 state grant, plans two new builds
Williamson-Maury Counties chapter of Habitat for Humanity recently announced it has received a $46,500 grant from the Tennessee Housing Development Agency (THDA).
The funds will be used to build two new homes in Maury County during the coming year, officials say, noting that the money is part of a larger $500,000 statewide grant.
'THDA is a vital partner in making homeownership attainable for more Tennesseans,' said Colleen Dudley, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Tennessee. 'This grant is an investment in families who are working hard to achieve homeownership. It also strengthens local economies by fostering stability and growth, ensuring that communities continue to thrive.'
THDA was first created in 1978 with the goal of promoting affordable housing for low to moderate-income individuals and families in Tennessee.
The agency also supplies grants to different programs helping with housing assistance. To that end, the agency has directed more than $117.3 million in grants to housing assistance programs in Tennessee since 2006, figures show.
'We are truly grateful for THDA's support," Habitat for Humanity of Williamson-Maury Counties chapter CEO Kim Randell said. "This grant represents hope, security and the promise of new beginnings for these two local families. THDA's loyal generosity reminds us of the power of partnerships, and we are honored to have them join us in this life-changing work."
Habitat for Humanity has been active in Tennessee since 1978, starting with Appalachia Habitat in Scott and Morgan counties. Over the past 47 years, the organization has grown to include 36 affiliates serving more than 60 counties.
The Williamson-Maury chapter welcomed its last family into a new Maury county home in March 2023.
No specific build plans or dates have been announced for the two new homes to date.
Habitat for Humanity homeownership applicants must complete a program that includes budget coaching, lending a hand on the build site and homebuyer education classes.
Construction for the home is funded through tax-deductible financial contributions; in-kind donations from local businesses, churches, civic organizations and individuals; and profits generated from each affiliate's ReStore.

While a Costco membership has multiple perks, including bulk discounts and savings on gas, there are a few things the card can't provide. For example, access to board domestic flights or certain federal facilities, unlike the REAL ID. Since the May 7 implementation date, travelers in Tennessee and across the United States have relied on REAL ID — or other acceptable forms of identification — to pass through security and travel domestically. When people try to use their warehouse club cards at airports, for instance, it could lead to delays and travel headaches, she added. A REAL ID is not necessary to drive, vote, purchase alcohol or cigarettes, access hospitals, visit the post office, access federal courts or apply for or receive federal benefits such as social security or veterans' benefits.
