Two Sabah assemblymen, businessman plead not guilty in RM350,000 bribery case
PETALING JAYA: Two Sabah assemblymen and a businessman pleaded not guilty at the Special Corruption Court in Kota Kinabalu today to charges involving RM350,000 in bribes related to mineral prospecting licence applications.
Sindumin assemblyman Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob, Tanjung Batu assemblyman Datuk Andi Muhammad Suryady Bandy, and Selangor-based businessman Datuk Albert Tei Jiann Cheing appeared before Judge Jason Juga under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009.
All three denied the charges.
According to The Star, Dr Yusof was the first to be called, followed by Andi Muhammad and Tei. The trio arrived at the courthouse separately in the morning, with Tei entering at 8.40am, Andi at 8.46am, and Dr Yusof at 8.48am.
The charges stem from alleged offences committed in 2023. MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki had earlier confirmed the arrest of a state assemblyman and a businessman on June 18 over suspected bribery involving RM200,000.
Sources indicated the assemblyman, in his 60s, and the businessman, in his 30s, were accused of offences between 2023 and 2024.
On June 23, Azam announced the arrest of another assemblyman, believed to have solicited and received RM150,000 in bribes in the same case. The second suspect, in his 40s and holding an assistant minister position, is also accused of offences spanning 2023 to 2024.
The businessman was released on RM100,000 bail with two sureties, while the two assemblymen were granted RM50,000 bail each with one surety after their statements were recorded.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court today sentenced a former investment banker to two years' jail and a RM1mil fine, or six months' jail in default, for securities fraud involving RM201,000. In a statement, the Securities Commission (SC) said Ruwan Amaresh Shaun Ponniah, a former associate director at CIMB Investment Bank, was sentenced by Sessions Court judge Norma Ismail after pleading guilty to a charge under Section 179(b) of the Capital Markets and Services Act 2007. The court also took into consideration nine other similar charges under section 171A of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC). Ruwan had falsely represented to seven investors that he would invest their monies in shares listed on the Malaysian and foreign stock exchanges. The monies were instead utilised for other purposes without the investors' knowledge. Ruwan also pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 58(1) of the CMSA for unlawfully holding himself out as a licensed fund manager. The court sentenced him to two years imprisonment and ordered for the jail term to run concurrently with the first offence. Fund management is a regulated activity under Schedule 2 of the CMSA. The offences took place between October 2018 and June 2020. Ruwan's plea was made in pursuant to his application for a plea bargain under section 172C of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC). He was first arrested and charged by the SC on Sept 18, 2024. He claimed trial to all the charges and was granted bail at RM210,000 with one surety. On Feb 5, 2025, the High Court reduced Ruwan's bail to RM105,000 following his application. However, he failed to post bail and has been held at Sungai Buloh Prison since. The court ordered his jail term to begin from the date of his arrest. KOTA KINABALU (June 30): Kota Kinabalu Member of Parliament cum Deputy Minister of Plantation and Commodities, Datuk Chan Foong Hin, has allocated over RM100,000 this year to reward 367 high-achieving students who excelled in the 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination. This marks the second consecutive year the Kota Kinabalu Parliamentary Office has hosted the 'Anugerah Kecemerlangan SPM MADANI' awards ceremony, which celebrates academic excellence and encourages students to continue striving for success. The ceremony took place on Saturday at SJKC Chung Hwa Likas. Students who achieved between 6As and 11As received cash awards of RM250 to RM300 each. Among the recipients, 113 students scored 9As or above. Special awards were also presented for Best Male Student, Best Female Student, and Best Performing School. Notably, both the top male and female students were from Tshung Tsin Secondary School: Soh Yim Qin scored 10A+, while Mohammad Arif Mohammad Adam achieved 9A+ and 1A. He reaffirmed that quality education is a right for every student, regardless of race, religion, or socioeconomic status.
