Israeli troops fire ‘warning' shots near EU diplomats, sparking outcry amid Gaza pressure

Israeli troops fired warning shots during foreign diplomats' visit to the occupied West Bank on Wednesday, the military said, drawing condemnation as pressure mounted on Israel to allow aid into war-battered Gaza.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas urged Israel to hold accountable those responsible for the shooting near the city of Jenin, a stronghold of Palestinian armed groups and a frequent target of Israeli raids.
The Palestinian foreign ministry accused Israel of having 'deliberately targeted by live fire an accredited diplomatic delegation'.
The Israeli military said 'the delegation deviated from the approved route', prompting troops to fire 'warning shots' to keep them away from 'an area where they were not authorised to be'.
In a statement, the military said it 'regrets the inconvenience caused' by the shooting, which resulted in no injuries.
The incident came as international pressure mounted on Israel over the war in the Gaza Strip, where Palestinians waited desperately for vital supplies after the easing of a two-month total aid blockade.

Israel attacks Yemen's Houthi-held Hodeida port in first direct strike by navy

The Israeli navy attacked docks in Yemen's rebel-held port city of Hodeida on Tuesday, likely damaging facilities that are key to aid shipments to the hungry, war-wracked nation. The Israeli military said navy missile ships conducted the strikes, the first time its forces have been involved in attacks against the Houthi rebels. Tuesday's attack comes as the Houthis have repeatedly launched missiles and drones targeting Israel during its war on Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The Houthis announced the attack via their al-Masirah satellite news channel. They said the attack targeted docks there, without elaborating. Late Monday, Israel issued online warnings to Yemenis to evacuate from Ras Isa, Hodeida and al-Salif ports over the Houthis' alleged use of seaports for attacks. 'The port is used to transfer weapons and is a further example of the Houthi terrorist regime's cynical exploitation of civilian infrastructure in order to advance terrorist activities,' the Israeli military said in a statement on Tuesday.

Convoy sets off for Gaza from North Africa to protest against Israel's blockade

A convoy of buses and private cars departed for Gaza from Tunisia's capital on Monday as part of efforts to spotlight Israel's blockade on humanitarian aid to the territory, even as Israeli authorities stopped a high-profile flotilla from landing there. Advertisement The overland effort – organised independently but moved up to coincide with the flotilla – is made up of activists, lawyers and medical professionals from North Africa. It plans to cross Tunisia, Libya and Egypt before reaching Rafah, the border crossing with Egypt that has remained largely closed since Israel's military took control of the Gaza side in May 2024. The Tunisian civil society groups behind the convoy said their aim is to demand 'the immediate lifting of the unjust siege on the strip'. They asserted that Arab governments have not pushed enough to end the 20-month war between Israel and Hamas. After a two-and-a-half-month blockade of Gaza aimed at pressuring Hamas, Israel started allowing in some basic aid last month. Experts, however, have warned of famine in the territory of more than 2 million people unless the blockade is lifted and Israel ends its military offensive. Advertisement

Trump's new travel ban takes effect, citizens of 12 nations barred from US

US President Donald Trump's sweeping new travel ban came into effect early Monday immediately after midnight, barring citizens from a dozen nations from entering the United States and reviving a divisive measure from his first term. Advertisement The move is expected to disrupt refugee pathways and further restrict immigration as the Trump administration expands its crackdown on illegal entries. Many of the nations covered by the restrictions have adversarial relations with the United States, such as Iran and Afghanistan, while others face severe crises, like Haiti and Libya. In announcing his restrictions last week , Trump said the new measure was spurred by a recent 'terrorist attack' on Jews in Colorado. The group had been protesting in solidarity with hostages held in Gaza when they were assaulted by a man the White House said had overstayed his visa.
