UFC commentators stunned as main event cancelled after Maycee Barber suffers reported seizure

New York Post2 days ago

The UFC world has been left stunned after the Vegas 107 main event was cancelled at the last possible moment after Maycee Barber suffered a seizure.
Barber was supposed to be returning after a 14-month layoff due to several health issues to face rising contender Erin Blanchfield.
However, she never made it to the UFC Octagon after suffering a seizure as she started to make the walk.
Barber missed weight ahead of the card as concerns about her health lingered but no one would have expected what happened on Sunday.
After the UFC broadcast played the pre-main event video package, no fighter emerged much to the confusion of the commentators.

After half a minute of silence, Brendan Fitzgerald informed fans Barber was 'not prepared to walk.'
'I'm still getting details but all I know is that she is not walking to the Octagon right now,' Fitzgerald said.
'This is truly unprecedented and for me, for a main event prepared to make the introductions and she's not there to walk right now.'
The broadcast team quickly cut to an ad break before returning to confirm the main event had been cancelled due to a 'health event.'

That health event was later confirmed to be a seizure, as fighters quickly sent their well-wishes to the 27-year-old.
'Seizures! Woah, that's very serious. Hopefully, she is able to recover and fight again. Prayers to her,' Australian UFC fighter Casey O'Neill wrote on X.
'Prayers up to Maycee Barber,' one fan added.
While another wrote: 'All the best Maycee Barber. My thoughts are with you.'

Arman Tsarukyan Willing To Be Backup For UFC 317 Or UFC 318 Main Event

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - APRIL 13: Arman Tsarukyan of Georgia prepares to fight in a lightweight fight ... More during the UFC 300 event at T-Mobile Arena on April 13, 2024 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images) If the UFC needs a backup fighter for the main event of the UFC 317 or UFC 318 pay-per-view cards, Arman Tsarukyan is willing and able to step in on short notice. Tsarukyan (22-3) is the No. 1 fighter in the UFC lightweight rankings. The 28-year-old was to face Islam Makhachev for the UFC lightweight title at UFC 311, but he was forced from that fight after when he sustained an injury during his weight cut. Instead, Makhachev faced Renato Moicano on that pay-per-view card, defending his title via first-round submission. Tsarukyan has not competed since he earned a split-decision win over Charles Oliveira at UFC 300 in April 2024. 'I am not sure if that's needed, but if they offer me that, I will definitely back it up,' Tsarukyan recently said. 'I will be ready. I am flying back to the U.S. now and will be staying there in case anyone is injured and [if] the UFC asks me if I am ready, I will say yes.' 'I need to take chances now," Tsarukyan added. "I got injured and this injury got misinterpreted. The doctor didn't let everybody know what really happened, so some people still think I ducked that fight. 'Now I just need to get back on track, so I'm going to do whatever the UFC tells me to do.' ABU DHABI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES - OCTOBER 21: Islam Makhachev of Russia reacts after his knockout ... (Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images) The main event of UFC 317 will crown a new lightweight champion. In the lead-up to UFC 316, the speculation was if Belal Muhammad retained his UFC welterweight title with a win over Jack Della Maddalena, then UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev would remain at 155 pounds and defend his title against Ilia Topuria. The reason for this thinking being that Makhachev and Muhammad have trained together and that they would not be willing to face each other inside the Octagon. However, with Jack Della Maddalena defeating Muhammad, that opened the door for Makhachev to move to welterweight. The thinking now being that he will get an immediate title shot against Maddalena in the freshly crowned champ's first title defense. Makhachev's manager Ali Abdelaziz spoke to MMA Junkie about the situation. 'If Belal were to win, Islam was never going to fight Belal, and he's going to stay in the (lightweight) division. But now Jack wins,' Abdelaziz said. 'Islam has beaten everyone in this division, literally. Dan Hooker, Arman (Tsarukyan), Charles Oliveira, he's on a 15-fight winning streak, finished nine of his last 10 opponents. (There's no one who) deserves to go fight for a second title than Islam, and the reason he wasn't going to do it because Belal was the champion.' UFC CEO Dana White has announced the plans for Della Maddalena vs. Makhachev, but did not announce a date for the 170-pound title fight. With that, the UFC lightweight title will most likely become vacant the moment the UFC 317 main event, which pits former UFC lightweight champion Ilia Topuria against Oliveira, begins. UFC 317 takes place on Saturday, June 28 from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. ATLANTA, GA - APRIL 11: Max Holloway and Dustin Poirier face-off for the media during the UFC 236 ... More Ultimate Media Day at Hyatt Regency Atlanta on April 11, 2019 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Josh Hedges/Zuffa LLC/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images) Dustin Poirier will close out his UFC career in a main event matchup against Max Holloway at UFC 318. Holloway's BMF title will be on the line in the lightweight matchup, which marks the third meeting between the two future UFC Hall of Famers. UFC 318 takes place on July 19 at Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. We will have more on Arman Tsarukyan, UFC 317 and UFC 318 as news becomes available.

UFC 316 makes two new fights official days prior to event

UFC 316 makes two new fights official days prior to event UFC 316 is days away and the lineup is still being tinkered with. After independent reports in recent days, the promotion made official two new fights for Saturday's card at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. Khaos Williams, who needed an opponent after withdrawals from Uros Medic and Albert Tadevosyan. He will now fight Andreas Gustafsson, who was expected to fight this past Saturday, but who had his bout canceled when opponent Trevin Giles fell and hit his head on weigh-ins day. Front Kick Online first reported the bout. Williams (15-4 MMA, 6-3 UFC) and Gustafsson (11-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC) are bout strike-heavy fighters, which could make for an appealing matchup for violence seekers. Williams aims to bounce back from a submission loss to Gabriel Bonfim. Gustafsson looks to make the most out of his UFC debut after an impressive TKO win over Pat Pytlik on Dana White's Contender Series. Eurosport NL first reported the bout. Additionally, a lightweight bout between promotional newcomer Mark Choinski and MarQuel Mederos has been added to the card. Choinski (8-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) enters the promotion as the Anthony Pettis FC lightweight champion. Factory X's Mederos (10-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) aims to maintain his perfect career record after consecutive UFC victories over Landon Quinones and Austin Hubbard.

Demetrious Johnson reveals how Ilia Topuria could be exploited at UFC 317

Ilia Topuria has proven to be unbeatable so far, but Demetrious Johnson suggests one area where he could be exploited. Topuria (16-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) takes on Charles Oliveira (35-10 MMA, 23-10 UFC) for the vacant lightweight title in the UFC 317 main event on June 28 from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+). Advertisement Topuria poses threats with his boxing, grappling and jiu-jitsu. While Oliveira is also an all-around threat, Johnson advises the Brazilian to test him to an unfamiliar position. "I think somebody who is able to expose him – like he's very good at that range, of that slow, check, slow, check, and he gets in there, and he throws like five-punch combinations," Johnson said in an interview with Tim Welch. "But once somebody gets him in that clinch, that area, that's where I think we will see how he reacts, because when you get in that clinch. ... I feel like that area we haven't seen him fight, and if Charles can get him there – obviously if he grabs the clinch, he can go body, body, head. But, when he does body, body, head, you can still bang him with a knee so, it's a give and take. If Charles can get him there, it will be interesting to see what happens." Former UFC flyweight champion Johnson explained how he would fight Topuria. "If I was to fight Ilia, I would fight him in the clinch," Johnson added, "It's like, 'OK, outside he hits too hard, he's going to stalk me. If I shoot, he's going to defend, and then he's going to back up, or he might try to take me down. What would he do in the clinch?' Because I know he's going to go body, body, and I'm going to go elbow. That's where I'm like I want to see what he would do." Advertisement According to DraftKings, Topuria is currently a big -380 favorite over fellow former champion Oliveira, who's a +300 underdog.
