Ryanair and Aer Lingus travel bombshell as new hand luggage rule activated
Irish holidaymakers jetting off to the US this summer are being urged to adhere to strict updated luggage rules that could catch some Irish tourists unawares. Ryanair, Aer Lingus and other airline passengers are now being advised to double check their packing before heading to the airport, as a number of everyday electronic items are no longer allowed in checked baggage. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have confirmed that seven specific battery-powered items have been banned from being packed in the aircraft's hold on long haul flights. They say the reason is straightforward – safety. The newly prohibited items are all considered a fire hazard if placed in checked luggage, and must now be carried in hand luggage instead. In recent months, several airlines had already stopped travellers from placing portable chargers in their checked bags, but US authorities are now taking things a step further, reports Galway Beo. "Portable chargers could catch fire and are not allowed in checked luggage in the hope of preventing any deadly disaster." And it's not just portable chargers under scrutiny. The CAA, who are responsible for regulating and overseeing aviation safety, also warned of the dangers posed by certain types of batteries. They said: "Portable chargers could cause an intense fire which couldn't be dealt with if it happened in the hold." Holidaymakers are being warned to change their packing habits as new rules ban spare laptop batteries from checked luggage unless they're installed in the device, with the latest safety advice stating they must be carried in hand luggage and "protected from damage and short circuits". Extra lithium-metal batteries have also been added to the no-fly list for checked bags, meaning loose lithium batteries, such as those used in cameras, vapes, and other gadgets, now need to be transported in the cabin in separate protective covers. The update is set to shake up pre-flight prep for travellers jetting off from Ireland to the likes of New York, Boston or Orlando. Those setting off from Shannon, Dublin or Knock airports are being urged to review airline policies ahead of time and ensure any impacted items are stowed in hand luggage to sidestep any potential hold-ups or confiscations at the airport.

Guests at hotel blast 'chavs' & defend 'delicious' Greek food after gran's moan
Regular guests at the Corfu hotel lambasted by a British gran for its lack of so-called English grub have hit out at "pathetic chavs" leaving negative reviews. The Lido Corfu Sun Hotel on the Greek isle was thrust into the limelight this week following Susan Edwards, 69, moaning about the scarcity of chips and her frustration at constantly seeing rice. The hotel's management has since defended their menu, touting it as "generous and diverse", with a daily spread of "fresh salads, fruits, hot and cold dishes". In the wake of the controversy, guests have flocked to Tripadvisor and Google Reviews to champion the resort they adore, claiming Ms Edwards' gripes are unjust. One so incensed penned their inaugural Tripadvisor critique to label fellow holidaymakers as "pathetic chavs". This profile, freshly set-up this month apparently as a retort to the dispute, awarded the Lido Corfu Sun Hotel top marks. Their review states: "Don't listen to pathetic chavvy Brits and Poles who bought the cheapest 'all Inclusive' package in existence and demanded type of service only the most entitled and uncouth would. It's a fine, charming little place. Close to water, nice food and clean facilities. Thankfully, no British food!". Another commentator also sneaks in a sly jab at Ms Edwards' complaints, asserting the Greek cuisine is scrumptious. They, with apparent sarcasm, praised the way in which the hotel caters for Scottish visitors in their appraisal, posted mere hours after Ms Edwards' grievances hit the headlines, reports the Mirror. The traveller wrote: "Phenomenal hotel, very comfortable and well located for a relaxing holiday, we are regular visitors. Excellent all inclusive food and drink package, they really go out their way to cater for Scottish visitors. "We enjoyed draught Tennant's lager, Irn Bru was on tap (diet and full fat), square sausage on a roll at breakfast, scotch pies and bridies at lunchtime, and there was always a choice of haggis or mince 'n tatties at dinner. Tunnock's tea cakes and shortbread were available all day, along with Scottish Blend tea. The staff are lovely and cannot do enough for you. The Greek dishes are also immense, which is a bonus, as Corfu is in Greece." Praise continued on Google Reviews, where most pegged Lido Corfu Sun Hotel with top marks - five stars. One of the recent glowing reviews stated: "The food is delicious. The service is great. We arrived at 4am and at 8am we got a room and wristbands and we could use everything. On the day of departure after adding the key to the transfer itself we could use all the facilities and food. We sincerely recommend." Ms Edwards, a gran from Westerhope, Newcastle, described her holiday as "horrendous" from the moment she and her family arrived, including her two cousins, second cousin, and daughter. TUI responded to the fiasco by offering the guests €120 in holiday vouchers, with a spokesperson expressing their regret: "Our priority is to ensure customers have the best possible holiday experience, so we are sorry to hear that Ms Edwards felt dissatisfied with her holiday. We have been in touch directly with Ms Edwards to come to a resolution."

Ryanair passengers injured on 'dangerous' flight after plane hits 'supercell'
Ryanair passengers were left shaken last night after a flight with 185 people on board was forced to make an emergency landing in Germany during a violent thunderstorm. German Authorities said nine people, including a two-year-old child and a crew member, were injured on the plane which had departed Berlin and was en route to Milan. Flight FR8 encountered extreme turbulence over southern Germany and was battered by a severe storm which experts believe was a "supercell" - a highly dangerous rotating thunderstorm. Supercells can span up to 50km across, with tornado-like winds inside. Flightradar24 data shows the jet abruptly changed course mid-flight, veering south to Memmingen as the situation escalated. The dangerous conditions prompted the pilot to abandon the original flight path and divert to Memmingen Airport in Bavaria, where an emergency landing was made. One terrified passenger described the scenes on board as "chaotic and dangerous". Among the nine injured was a toddler who sustained bruising, another woman who suffered a head injury and one person who was treated for back injuries. Three were taken to hospital and emergency services rushed to the aircraft once it landed. The German weather service had issued warnings for severe storms across the region, with threats of hail and storm gusts. In the nearby city of Ulm, a tornado ripped the roofs off houses in multiple streets, Mirror UK reports. The flight was grounded after landing and unable to continue due to weather-related restrictions. Irish airline Ryanair arranged buses to help passengers complete their journey to Milan. German police and Ryanair are expected to release statements today.
