Independent28-02-2025

Bernd das Brot, a perpetually pessimistic German bread puppet, is celebrating 25 years on TV.
Initially a children's show character, Bernd gained a cult adult following after his show was aired during late-night hours.
Known for his gloomy demeanour and catchphrase 'I would like to leave this show', Bernd's popularity stems from his relatable pessimism and dry humour.
Bernd even won the prestigious Adolf Grimme Prize in 2004 for 'representing the right to be in a bad mood'.
KiKA, the German children's channel Bernd calls home, is celebrating his anniversary with new episodes and online activities.

Who is Romeo Beckham's rumoured flame Caroline Daur - huge net worth and Victoria's seal of approval

Romeo Beckham has sparked new romance rumours after being spotted with German model Caroline Daur, 30, just weeks after his split from Kim Turnbull Speculation has been abuzz once more about the Beckham clan as Romeo Beckham was spotted out in public with a potential new flame. It comes just weeks after the 22 year old is said to have split with ex, Kim Turnbull. Romeo was seen spending quality time along with German fashion model Caroline Daur, 30. The blogger even appears to already have the seal of approval from mum Victoria Beckham, who has admired her work. ‌ The Spice Girls star's Facebook account asked Caroline for an image of her wearing one of her designs back in 2018. Caroline has also been spotted at various fashion shows for the Victoria Beckham brand, as reported by the Mirror. ‌ But what is her background? She revealed previously she credits her success to being "self-made". She said: "I don't have an agent, manager or assistant. I do everything by myself." Caroline emerged in the industry in 2010 with a fashion blog which has only continued to grow in success. It has so far amassed 4.6million Instagram followers. She also has over one million people follower her TikTok account. The model is now believed to have a net worth of around €4 million (£3.4million). Not only dabbling in the fashion world, but she's also branched out into the television industry. She starred as a guest just on the German version of Next Top Model. Caroline also launched a series of work out videos which were available to follow online. The German model is also set to appear on the small-screen for a new German Netflix series, She Said Yes. Elsewhere in her personal life, Caroline has also candidly opened up on her struggles with ADHD after recieving a diagnosis later in life. "It didn't surprise me," she confessed after revealing the condition. "And it didn't surprise anyone around me either. The diagnosis came late, but it explained so much." ‌ She continued: "'My brain is like an internet browser with 47 tabs open. Sport is the only way I can calm it down. This morning I worked out at 7am, even after a short night. Without it, I just don't function." It's so far not been disclosed how Romeo's famous family brood will react to a romance between the pair. He has found himself wrapped up in the alleged ongoing family feud after eldest son Brooklyn, 26, snubbed dad David's 50th birthday celebrations. ‌ Brooklyn was said to have been 'uneasy' about Romeo dating his ex Kim, with the pair previously being close pals. He reportedly felt his parents were 'favouring' his younger brother, who was seen beaming in snaps from David's birthday. Amid the fallout, Romeo and Kim ended their partnership and now appears to be getting cosy with the German model. The pair were spotted in Paris together, having reportedly bonded over their love of Tennis. Both were attending the Men's Singles Semi Final at the French Open on Friday.

The Day of the Jackal author Frederick Forsyth dies aged 86

The best-selling author was known for a number of crime thrillers, including The Day of the Jackal, which was recently adapted into a Sky TV series. He was described as "one of the world's greatest thriller writers", in a tribute. He was surrounded by his family as he died at home on Monday morning. A statement by Jonathan Lloyd, Forsyth's agent, said: 'We mourn the passing of one of the world's greatest thriller writers. 'Only a few weeks ago I sat with him as we watched a new and moving documentary of his life – In My Own Words, to be released later this year on BBC1 – and was reminded of an extraordinary life, well lived. 'After serving as one of the youngest ever RAF pilots, he turned to journalism, using his gift for languages in German, French and Russian to become a foreign correspondent in Biafra. 'Appalled at what he saw and using his experience during a stint as a secret service agent, he wrote his first and perhaps most famous novel, The Day of the Jackal (1972), and instantly became a global bestselling author. 'He went on to write more than 25 books (many of which were made into films) that have sold over 75 million copies. 'He will be greatly missed by his family, his friends, all of us at Curtis Brown and of course his millions of fans around the world – though his books will of course live on forever.' Forsyth was born in Kent, and was best known for various crime thriller novels, such as The Day of the Jackal and The Odessa File. He has sold millions of copies of his books and was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 1997 New Year Honours list for services to literature. Forsyth previously resided in a manor house in Hertfordshire before moving to Buckinghamshire in 2010. He is survived by two sons, Stuart and Shane, whom he had with Cunningham.
