‘May his soul rest in peace': Sick post after pigeon attacked with golf club by trio of Western Australian men

WARNING: Distressing content
A trio of men have been fined for their roles in the 'despicable' bashing of a pigeon with a golf club, with a court being told a vile video of the ordeal was published online.
The sick clip which became the subject of an RSPCA WA investigation depicts one man, 25, hitting the bird with the club, launching it more than a metre through the air.
A screenshot from further in the video shows the attacker mid-swing as he brings the golf club down on the defenceless bird as it flaps its wings.
The 25-year-old hit the bird four times, with its feathers falling out with each subsequent hit.
After the assault, the pigeon was picked up, still alive, and tossed into a nearby skip bin.
The 25-year-old was fined $48,000 for his role, while the two other offenders – both 30-year-old men, were fined $39,000 for their part in producing the video.
The trio were all working on a gold mining project in Western Australia at the time of the 2023 offence.
The video, posted to one of the offender's Snapchat stories, was captioned 'May his soul rest in peace' followed by a crying laughing emoji.
The pigeon was alive throughout the sinister attack, and the men could be heard laughing throughout the video.
The men were sentenced on Monday in the Kalgoorlie Magistrates Court where magistrate William Yoo labelled the attacker's 'abominable' conduct as a 'disgusting and despicable thing to do'.
He said the act 'was absolutely disgusting, vile and reprehensible,' and the 'innocent and vulnerable' pigeon's distress was evident throughout the assault.
Mr Yoo described the men as having 'egged each other on' and betraying their 'own humanity'.
RSPCA WA inspector manager Kylie Green said the behaviour of the men in the video was disgusting.
'There is never an excuse to torment or abuse an animal,' she said.
'The fines handed down today are profoundly significant and it is hoped the message is loud and clear to those who think that cruelty towards animals is OK.'

Spain upholds fine against Rubiales for Hermoso forced kiss

A Spanish court on Wednesday confirmed the 10,800-euro fine disgraced former football federation chief Luis Rubiales received for forcibly kissing Jenni Hermoso, a sentence feminist groups condemned as too lenient. The Audiencia Nacional said in a statement that it rejected the appeals of Rubiales's defence team and prosecutors who had sought a prison term over the kiss at the 2023 Women's World Cup in Australia. After a keenly awaited trial that gripped Spain, the court in February found Rubiales guilty of sexual assault for the kiss but cleared him of a separate accusation of coercion for allegedly forcing Hermoso to downplay the incident. Rubiales maintained the kiss was a consensual "peck" between friends celebrating during the medal ceremony after star forward Hermoso had just helped Spain beat England in the final in Sydney, denying any coercion. Prosecutors had sought two-and-a-half years in jail for Rubiales, one year for sexual assault and 18 months for the alleged coercion. The court also confirmed on Wednesday that Rubiales, former women's national team manager Jorge Vilda and two former senior federation officials, Albert Luque and Ruben Rivera, were cleared of the coercion charge. A separate request by the prosecutors to rerun the trial, notably due to doubts over the judge's impartiality, was dismissed. The court also maintained a ban on Rubiales from going within a 200-metre radius of Hermoso and from communicating with her for one year. The kiss sparked a global uproar that forced Rubiales to relinquish his post, saw him banned from all football-related activity for three years and plunged the federation into a prolonged period of turmoil. The affair also made Hermoso, the all-time top scorer for the national women's team, an icon of the fight against sexism and macho culture in sport.

Man, 18, charged with affray after alleged vicious stabbing outside Westfield in Mt Druitt, Sydney

A man has been charged over an alleged stabbing incident outside a Sydney Westfield shopping centre which left two hospitalised. Emergency services were called to the centre at Mt Druitt on about 5.15pm on Tuesday following reports of a group of men fighting. A NSW Police spokesperson said police were told a group of males, believed to be known to each other were involved in a brawl before the injuries were inflicted. Officers attached to Mount Druitt Police Area Command attended and found a 17-year-old boy and a 22-year-old man had suffered stab wounds. They were treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to hospital where they remain in a stable condition. Police quickly established a crime scene in the aftermath of the incident. Following inquiries, an 18-year-old man was arrested in North Rooty Hill at around 4pm on Wednesday. NSW Police said the man was arrested by detectives from Strike Force Leeman before he was taken to Mount Druitt Police Station. The man has since been charged with affray and will front Parramatta Local Court on Thursday. Police will allege in court the 18-year-old man was known to the boy and the man who sustained stab wounds.

Lisa Wilkinson appears in surprise cameo on The Project as the show celebrates its best celeb interviews

An unexpected face made a brief appearance on Wednesday's episode of The Project as the show continues to celebrate its last week on air. A number of archive clips featuring Lisa Wilkinson were included in a segment looking back at the show's most memorable celebrity interviews. It included vision from Wilkinson's 2020 interview with Robbie Williams that saw her ask the rocker if there was anything he hadn't tried yet that he'd like to. Williams' answer was bleeped, with Wilkinson laughing: 'I can't use that'. Despite briefly appearing in the montage, Wilkinson wasn't mentioned first-hand by any of the panellists. Wilkinson quit The Project in November 2022, but remained with Network 10 for another two years despite never returning to air. Her appearance, even in clips, may be surprising to some viewers considering the former Ten star had been locked in a legal battle with her former employer until earlier this year. Back in February, Channel 10 were ordered to pay an additional $590,000 – and a total of $1.15m – to cover her legal costs for the Bruce Lehrmann defamation trial. Justice Michael Lee last year dismissed Lehrmann's high-stakes lawsuit against Ten and Wilkinson after he found — on the civil standard of the balance of probabilities — that the former political staffer had raped Brittany Higgins inside Parliament House in March 2019. Lehrmann sued Ten and Wilkinson, claiming he had been defamed by a The Project interview in which Higgins alleged she was raped by a colleague after a night out drinking in Canberra. Ten and Wilkinson were at odds over her legal bill and how much the network should reimburse her after she hired outside counsel, prominent barrister Sue Chrysanthou SC, to defend her separately to the network during the trial. Ten had already paid $558,548 of Ms Wilkinson's legal bill. She had initially sought $1.8m. And the remainder of her costs were examined by a referee. Justice Lee in February made an order in the Federal Court that Ten pay Wilkinson an additional of $591,000 before March 19. It took the total amount to be paid by Ten to its former start to $1.15m Justice Lee last year ordered that Lehrmann pay Ten $2m, after finding in favour of the broadcaster.
