Alert issued for UK households buying strawberries at major supermarkets

Daily Mirror19-05-2025

Households are being warned of a so-called 'giant' bumper crop of strawberries in the UK this summer as growers say shoppers may struggle to fit the fruit in their mouths
Brits have been issued a bizarre warning over strawberries following an unexpectedly sunny spring. Whether you love to dip them into sugar, drown them in double cream, or blend them into a smoothie - strawbs are one of the nation's favourite fruits - and a clear sign that summer is just around the corner,
Supermarkets including Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Asda and M&S, have already started filling their shelves with the popular food this month - but shoppers may have noticed a slight change. This year, the fruit seems to have had a huge growth spurt.

Speaking to The Guardian, UK producers have revealed 'perfect' weather conditions have resulted in a crop of 'giant' strawberries that are 'too big to fit in your mouth. Operations director at the Summer Berry Company Bartosz Pinkosz says the fruit is between 10-20 per cent bigger than usual, admitting that he's 'never seen anything like it' in his 20-year career.

"We had the darkest January and February since the 70s but then the brightest March and April since 1910," Bartosz said. "From March onwards it was really kind of perfect for tunnel strawberries. The berries are between 10 per cent and 20 per cent larger."
Along with record-breaking levels of sunlight, the UK has also witnessed several mini heatwaves - with temperatures exceeding 25C. However, in classic British fashion, downpours of rain are expected to quash the heat in the coming days.
According to Birmingham Live, some of the strawberries from this year's crop weigh a whopping 50g. The announcement will be well-received by tennis fans heading to Wimbledon this year, where a staggering 1.92 million strawberries are served every year.
British Berry Growers' chair Nick Marston said the giant strawberries have 'really great flavour and sugar content' - but confirms that not all punnets will include huge berries that are 20 per cent bigger than average. "The slower the development of the fruits, the more time to expand the cells and create the bigger berry," he added.
"What we are now seeing is something I have never seen in 19 years, which is consistently larger berries." Nick confessed he'd never witnessed a harvest 'produce such large berries consistently' - with some strawberries growing to the size of plums and kiwis.

While everybody knows how delicious strawberries are, there health benefits are often overlooked. The fruit, which originated in Europe in the 18th century, are a great source of vitamin C and manganese - and are reach in antioxidants which could help control your blood sugar levels.
"Fibre comprises around 26 per cent of the carb content of strawberries," explains Healthline. "One 100g serving of strawberries provides two grams of fibre — both soluble and insoluble. Dietary fibres are important to feed the friendly bacteria in your gut and improve digestive health. They are also useful for weight loss and can help prevent many diseases."

Met Office warns Brits monster storms pose 'danger to life'

The Met Office has issued two yellow weather warnings as storms are set to batter parts of the UK today but this weather could potentially pose a 'danger to life' in some areas Brits have been warned about huge storms that are set to rip through parts of the country and could pose a "danger to life". This weeks hot and sunny weather is set to be moved on by monster storms that could dump heavy rain and bring thunder to certain parts of the nation today. The Met Office has warned this extreme weather could lead to some disruptions and has advised affected Brits on how to stay safe. Forecasters have issued two yellow weather warnings to parts of northern England, southern and eastern Scotland and the east of Northern Ireland for Saturday. ‌ ‌ Major cities that have been hit by this yellow weather warning include Newcastle, Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Belfast. The Met Office warning has been put in place until 6pm on Saturday. The yellow weather warning for the north of England and parts of Scotland has warned residents to be careful on the roads due to spray and sudden flooding. It has even said there is a "small chance" some communities could become cut off due to floods. Travellers using trains or buses have been told lightning strikes could lead to delays and possible service cancellations. Homes and businesses could also be affected by the lightning as there is a slight chance that power cuts could occur. The Met Office also warned Brits these storms could pose a "danger to life", and said: "There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life." Forecasters added: "Further areas of heavy rain and some thunderstorms will move north during Saturday. "Rainfall will vary across the warning area and some places will avoid the heaviest rain. However, 15-30 mm of rain is likely in places with some areas perhaps seeing 30-50 mm falling in a few hours. Event rainfall could reach 60-80 mm in some locations." ‌ A second yellow weather warning, for the eastern side of Northern Ireland, has also issued the same "danger to life" message about "fast flowing or deep floodwater". This warning echoed many of the messages from the other alert, including the risk of travelling on the roads due to potential flooding. This warning, however, added: "There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds." The Met Office added: "The rain will turn more showery in the afternoon and there will be a risk of thunderstorms. Rainfall will vary across the warning area and some places missing the heaviest rain. "However, where heavy rain occurs, 15-30 mm of rain is likely and a few areas may perhaps see 30-50 mm falling in a few hours." The Met Office has shared a list of 100 places that are set to be battered by violent thunderstorms today. Most of the UK will be engulfed by low pressure, which will cause to up to 80mm (3.1 inches) of rain to fall in just a few hours

There will be an incredible ceremony at the Horse Guard Parade and an airshow by the Red Arrows. King Charles and Queen Camilla will soon arrive and wave to the crowds from a carriage, as the monarch is still undergoing his weekly treatments for cancer. Following them will be the horse-riding trio Princess Anne, Prince Edward and Prince William. Kate Middleton and the kids - Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, nine, and naughty Prince Louis, six - are yet to arrive. This year will be Charles' third Trooping the Colour parade. The Coldstream Guards are on display for the world to see, dressed in full military regalia, alongside a huge number of supporting staff. Over 1,400 officers and soldiers, 400 musicians, 200 horses and 10 bands are taking part in the Trooping the Colour event. King Charles asked royals to wear black armbands in remembrance of those killed in the Air India plane tragedy. Those wearing the bands will be the Prince of Wales, Colonel of the Welsh Guards, the Princess Royal, Colonel Blues and Royals, and the Duke of Edinburgh, Colonel Scots Guards. A spokesperson said this is "a mark of respect for the lives lost, the families in mourning and all the communities affected by this awful tragedy". There will also be a minute's silence at the event following Thursday's devastating crash which killed at least 241 people. The parade today is almost five months before King Charles' actual birthday. Charles was born on November 14, though the reigning British monarch has two birthdays. The sovereign's birthday, which is celebrated through the Trooping the Colour, usually falls in the summer months. Notably, the King's youngest son and his family are not present. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were not invited last year either. The late Queen used to invite the extended Royal Family onto the balcony, but this was later changed so that only working royals are allowed. Trooping the Colour dates back to the 17th Century, when it was first held by King Charles II. The ceremony takes its name from each regiment showing off their battle colours, which made them easier to identify when at war. Fans can either stream the event or attend live, though Central London is expected to be extremely busy. 8 Cheerful royal fans have gone all out in Union Jack clothing for the event Credit: Goff 8 Preparations are underway for Trooping The Colour 2025 Credit: George Cracknell Wright
