Acas finds what makes Scots workers angry

Colleagues not doing their jobs properly, staff taking credit for other peoples' work and over-demanding bosses are the things most likely to make Scots employees angry according to figures just released.
The poll, commissioned by workplace relations experts Acas, asked employees to consider what three things made them the most angry in the workplace.
Half (50%) of Scots who took part cited people perceived not to be doing their job properly, while 43% pointed at others claiming credit for their work.
An over-demanding boss (41%), having too much work to do (38%) and rude customers or staff (34%) made up the top five things that made employees' blood boil.
Over a quarter of Scots (26%) cited 'feeling excluded by others at work' and around one in six (16%) pointed to a lack of training or an induction.
The YouGov poll, conducted between March 27 and April 1, also found that 1% included being angered by fellow staff voicing opinions opposite to their own.
Stewart Gee, Acas' Head of Individual Dispute Resolution, said: 'It's clear from our poll that there's a range of issues that make people angry at work.
'Anger over a lack of recognition, rudeness, their boss or a colleague seen as not pulling their weight can impact productivity and escalate to conflict if left unresolved.
'It is important for workplace conflict to be addressed at the earliest possible opportunity.'
According to Acas, conflict at work is estimated to cost UK organisations £30 billion each year. They say dealing with conflict positively and quickly can build trust and improve relationships.

It has been confirmed successful sea trials means that MV Isle of Islay - one of the first of the four ferries being built in Turkey in the wake of Scotland's ferry fiasco - is on target to be delivered sometime between next month and September. Meanwhile concerns have emerged that vital funding needed to have one key contract to build seven smaller ferries directly awarded to state-owned Ferguson Marine was not considered justified by ministers. Why did CMAL award ferry contracts to shipyards in Turkey and Poland? The Scottish Government -owned ferry and port owner CMAL awarded contracts to build ferries to Cemre Shipyard in Turkey and Remontowa Shipbuilding in Poland based on competitive procurement processes. These shipyards demonstrated the capability to deliver vessels that met technical specifications, timelines, and budgetary constraints. Remontowa was awarded a £175 million contract to build seven all-electric ferries, having received the highest score during the bidding process . The Turkish shipyard Cemre Marin Endustri was contracted to construct four new roll-on/roll-off passenger and vehicle ferries for Scotland's west coast ferry network. These vessels are intended to enhance services on routes to the Isle of Islay and the Little Minch corridor, which includes Skye, Harris, and North Uist. The deals together were worth £220m. Why was Ferguson Marine, the Scots state-owned shipyard firm not awarded these contracts? The Inverclyde firm had faced several challenges that affected its competitiveness in the bidding process. Firstly a lack of experience. The shipyard had not completed any ferries in the past five years, failing to meet the tender's requirement to show recent experience in building at least three similar ferries. Ferguson Marine's previous projects, such as the Glen Sannox and Glen Rosa, were significantly delayed and over budget, raising concerns about the yard's financial stability and project management capabilities. CMAL's procurement process emphasized technical and financial suitability. Ferguson Marine is understood to have not scored as highly as other bidders in these areas. What were the issues with the Glen Sannox and Glen Rosa projects? The issues with Glen Sannox and Glen Rosa has become known as Scotland's ferry fiasco. Glen Rosa and Glen Sannox's arrival to serve islands was scheduled to be online in the first half of 2018. Glen Sannox finally went into service on January but islanders are still awaiting the arrival of Glen Rosa. Costs of the entire project are currently expected to have multiplied at least five-fold from the original £96m price. The delays were down to design and construction flaws. Problems included inadequate planning, quality issues, and a lack of detailed construction plans with CMAL and Ferguson Marine blaming each other for failings. The contract also lacked adequate financial safeguards, such as a builder's refund guarantee, which would have protected public funds in case of project failures. What are the implications of awarding contracts to overseas shipyards? Awarding contracts to overseas shipyards has both advantages and disadvantages. Overseas shipyards like Cemre and Remontowa, it is felt, have demonstrated the ability to deliver vessels on time and within budget. These shipyards have experience building similar vessels, ensuring adherence to technical specifications. But the disadvantages are the economic impact on Scotland. Excluding domestic shipyards like Ferguson Marine can have negative effects on local employment and the Scottish shipbuilding industry. Ferguson Marine has previously indicated that losing ferry contracts had an effect on its ability to continue as a going concern. Asked in an exclusive interview with The Herald about new routes, taking into account how demand from travellers was developing, Gordon Dewar said: 'We think the Chinese and the Indian markets and other Asian markets are clearly things we should be working on, and we are.' While he said he was 'not going to speculate' on what would happen on this front, Mr Dewar added: 'The growth there demonstrates the opportunity. 'We just work quietly and we celebrate them [new routes] when they arrive.' He highlighted a major uplift in travel to destinations to which new, direct long-haul routes were launched. Mr Dewar said 'longer-haul new destinations add 30% to 50% to travel', noting direct routes meant journeys were 'less time-consuming". He highlighted Edinburgh Airport's success in winning direct flights between the Scottish capital and Beijing operated by Hainan Airlines, which revealed recently it was extending this service to year-round. Mr Dewar said: 'Hainan were one of many Chinese airlines we talked to. They were the one that responded first to really compelling data about why Chinese airlines will be very successful flying to Edinburgh." He flagged 'tens of thousands of Scots travelling between Scotland and Beijing…having to do it through other destinations' previously. Read more It was announced in late April that Hainan's direct service to Beijing would be increasing from seasonal to year-round. Edinburgh Airport has also enjoyed significant success in recent times in winning and building direct flights to North America, serving various key destinations in the US and Canada. It was announced in the spring that United Airlines is extending its service between Edinburgh and Washington DC to what the airport characterised as 'almost year-round'. In March, it was confirmed that Air Canada would launch a new direct route between Edinburgh and Montreal this summer. Mr Dewar said: 'We got a new Montreal route that was probably at least in part motivated by the reduction in traffic between Canada and America. We would have got Montreal at some point. I am not sure we would have got it this year if it hadn't been for that disruption.' In 2012, the year in which Mr Dewar took up the chief executive post at the airport, the passenger total was 9.19 million. Asked about the airport's capacity, in the context of its rapid increase in passenger numbers in recent years and the further expansion of flights projected, Mr Dewar replied: 'We have to build quickly…but we are not at the stage of being full yet. That has been true since 2012 where, apart from Covid, we have been in a constant build programme to keep up with that demand. 'We have got the space. We have got the funding. It is just a matter of getting it all lined up and making sure it lands the day before it is needed.' Mr Dewar highlighted the scale of the growth in the long-haul segment at Edinburgh Airport, and the general reduction in domestic traffic as things he did not foresee when he became chief executive. He underlined the extent to which overall passenger growth at Edinburgh Airport had been driven by international flights. Mr Dewar said: 'The ratio of international [traffic] we have is higher. All the growth is international. We have increased our proportion of inbound [passenger traffic]. The American routes – they tend to be stronger inbound demand.' Asked if he would in 2012 have envisaged passenger numbers being where they are now, Mr Dewar replied: 'We had a five-year plan [in 2012] which we slightly bettered.' 'Thirteen years later, the mix is slightly different from what I expected. No one would have seen the reduction in domestic and during Covid.' He declared that 'no one would have seen the growth in long haul'.

Scots bra tycoon Mone spent two years fiercely denying through an army of lawyers any involvement with the firm PPE Medro, which had earned over £200million worth of Government contracts to supply face masks and surgical gowns during the Covid pandemic. But in 2023 it was revealed that the Tory life peer and her three adult children had received £29million from the company via her second husband Doug Barrowman. That led to a 'Prince Andrew-style' TV showdown with the politics presenter on her weekly show Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg. Appearing alongside Barrowman, 60, Baroness Mone, 53, made the jaw-dropping confession: 'I can't see what we've done wrong. Lying to the press is not a crime.' And he confirmed he transferred £29million from the firm into a trust benefiting Baroness Mone and her three children. Mr Coad, 67, said: 'I did not advise her she should keep her involvement secret. "The suggestion she did so by taking the advice of her lawyers is just not true. "To have Baroness Mone make allegations against me of serious impropriety was potentially very damaging."
