New group takes over former Black Swan wedding venue, offering to honor old bookings

Yahooa day ago

Milwaukee-based hospitality group 41Fork is taking over a venue once operated by wedding company Black Swan MKE, which shuttered abruptly earlier this year.
Black Swan was ordered to vacate from its Third Ward wedding venue known as Plant No. 4 in December 2024, but customers only found out in March — leaving dozens of couples scrambling to save their wedding plans.
On May 23, 41Fork announced on its Facebook page that it signed a lease for the venue and is offering a 30-day window for former clients to reclaim their reservations.
Online court records show that the owners of the Plant No. 4 property sued to evict Black Swan MKE in November and that the eviction was granted in December.
In April, the property owners filed a separate lawsuit against Black Swan seeking more than $238,000 in unpaid rent, maintenance costs, and storage fees, alleging the venue failed to meet its obligations under the lease, according to court records.
Although Black Swan's owner acknowledged receipt of the lawsuit in late April, no formal response had been filed by the May 19 deadline, according to court records.
Black Swan is also being sued by the Wisconsin Department of Revenue for more than $7,000 in unpaid sales tax, court records show.
The company was run by father and son duo Peter and Stephen Sheperd, who have not responded to requests for comment.
41Fork is a collective of hospitality brands offering catering services, mobile bars and event venues. The group also operates at the following Milwaukee locations:
Noble Catering and Events, a catering company located at 400 E. Wisconsin Ave., Suite 102
Vault, a cocktail lounge located at 111 E. Kilbourn Ave., Suite 210
River Center Market, a food hall located at 111 E Kilbourn Ave., Suite 110
Until June 20, the company is inviting former Plant No. 4 clients who had previously booked events to reinstate their reservations.
41Fork said it will honor any payments those customers made to Black Swan, with the understanding that clients will be required to use NEAT, 41Fork's in-house bar service.
Owner Kaelyn Cervero said 41Fork will not book new clients until June 23 to honor the former contracts and avoid double bookings.
Affected clients can contact 41Fork by email at events@41fork.com, or through the contact form on its website.
Multiple consumers who filed complaints with the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection have received refunds from Black Swan, according to department spokesperson Caleb Kulich.
One of them was Brooke Moder, who paid a $6,025 deposit in July in hopes of having her wedding hosted by Black Swan.
Moder filed a complaint with the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection on March 21. The agency said on April 4 that Black Swan had agreed to issue a refund. Moder received a check for the full amount three days later.
Moder noted the check appeared to come from the wife of Black Swan's owner, which she called "a bit odd."

German chancellor to travel to US to meet with Trump

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will travel to Washington next week for his first visit since taking office, where he is scheduled to meet with US President Donald Trump. Source: Politico, a Brussels-based politics and policy news organisation, citing the German government press service, as reported by European Pravda Details: Merz will travel to the US on 4 May for his first visit under the new German government. His meeting with Trump is set for Thursday 5 June, followed by a joint press conference. At the meeting with Trump, they will discuss the Russo-Ukrainian war, the situation in the Middle East and trade issues. Background: Merz has repeatedly engaged in public disputes with the US administration, particularly after criticism from Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance regarding the classification of the far-right Alternative for Germany party as right-wing extremist. Merz stressed that neither Germany nor he personally interfered in the US election campaign or supported any candidate, and he expects the same attitude from the American administration. This week, the German chancellor stated that Europe is ready to fight for its fundamental values – freedom and democracy – thus responding to repeated criticism of the EU by the Trump administration and, in particular, Vice President Vance's infamous speech at the Munich Security Conference. UN agency says 77 trucks with aid goods were stormed in Gaza

A large number of starving people in the Gaza Strip have stopped, stormed and looted 77 trucks carrying aid goods from the UN World Food Programme (WFP) on their way to distribution centres, the Rome-based agency posted on the platform X on Saturday. "After nearly 80 days of a total blockade, communities are starving - and they are no longer willing to watch food pass them by," the statement said. "To restore hope, ease fear and prevent further chaos, we must flood the communities with food - now. Only consistent large-scale aid can rebuild trust," the WFP wrote. The WFP stated that it is capable of doing so: "WFP has enough food to feed all 2.2 [million] people for 2 months," the post on X further stated. However, this requires safe transport routes in the Gaza Strip, faster approval procedures on the Israeli side and ultimately a ceasefire in the Gaza conflict, which has been ongoing for almost 20 months. After a blockade of aid deliveries lasting several months, Israel has been allowing a small amount of goods into the sealed-off coastal strip for a few days. The blockade was intended to increase pressure on the Palestinian Islamist Hamas movement to release the remaining hostages it is holding in the Gaza Strip. Additionally, the government accused Hamas of stealing aid goods to make money, which Hamas denies.

Norfolk-based USS Gravely captures hundreds of pounds of cocaine worth over $13 million

The Norfolk-based USS Gravely last week seized more than 850 pounds of narcotics while in the Caribbean Sea. The ship's search and seizure team had boarded a 'vessel of interest' on May 25 and found 19 bales of cocaine, according to a news release from the Navy. A spokesperson for the Navy said the drugs had a street value of $13.6 million. 'Seamless integration of U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard maritime assets (are) integral to border protection — this is an excellent example of that teamwork,' said Vice Adm. Doug Perry, commander of the U.S. 2nd Fleet. 'Border security is national security.' The USS Gravely has been in the gulf since March 15 and works with Coast Guard personnel to target drug trafficking, illegal immigration and transnational crime.
