Islanders unhappy late goal was disallowed in shootout loss against Blue Jackets

NEW YORK (AP) — With the clock winding down in regulation in a tie game, the Islanders appeared to get the go-ahead goal against the Columbus Blue Jackets. However, it was immediately waved off by officials, and New York ended up losing 4-3 in a shootout.
Islanders forward Kyle Palmieri redirected a shot from Alexander Romanov past Blue Jackets goalie Elvis Merzlikins with about 9 seconds remaining. After officials waved it off for goaltender interference, the situation room in Toronto reviewed the play and confirmed the no-goal call on the ice.
'If Toronto is afraid to overturn calls made by their referee, we don't need Toronto,' Islanders coach Patrick Roy said. 'That's all I want to say.'
Shortly before the deflection, Palmieri skated in front of the the crease and Merzlikins came forward and bumped into him.
According to the league's explanation, 'Palmieri impaired Merzlikins' ability to play his position in the crease prior to the goal.'
Palmieri didn't like the call.
'He said there was contact initiated in the crease,' Palmieri said of a conversation with the referee. 'And I guess the goalie needs five minutes to get reset and ready for the shot, and it looked like he couldn't wait to wave it off.'
With one point earned for the shootout loss, the Islanders pulled into a tie with the New York Rangers, one point behind Montreal for the second wild card in the Eastern Conference. Columbus is another point back.

Spain hopes for Bonmati recovery at Euro 2025 and bids for 'historic generation' status

MADRID (AP) — Spain's final preparations for the Women's European Championship have been upended. Again. Three years ago, Alexia Putellas tore an ACL days before the competition. This time, a different Ballon d'Or-winning midfielder's tournament is in question after Aitana Bonmatí was hospitalized with viral meningitis. Bonmatí came down with a fever during practice Friday and later checked in to a Madrid hospital. The team planned to travel to Switzerland on Sunday for the tournament, where it is considered one of the favorites after winning the 2023 World Cup, even though it has never reached a Euros final before. Spain coach Montse Tomé revealed after Friday's 3-1 victory in a friendly against Japan that the 27-year-old star tested positive for viral meningitis. 'The word is scary, but the doctor tells me that she is under control. She will remain in the hospital and we don't know for how long," Tomé said. Stability after Rubiales scandal Bonmatí's setback aside, Spain had been enjoying some peace and stability now that the Luis Rubiales scandal is behind them. Spain is arriving for Euro 2025 just a few months after Rubiales was convicted of sexual assault for an unsolicited kiss on player Jenni Hermoso during the 2023 World Cup awards ceremony. The conviction helped end one of the worst chapters in the history of Spanish soccer. The kiss sparked outrage and marred the nation's celebrations of the team's first major title in women's soccer. It ignited an unprecedented crisis that left the Spanish federation and women's soccer in turmoil. Spanish society called for more support for women, and sports officials ultimately were forced to review outdated protocols and improve the conditions for the women's team that is among the main title favorites at Euro 2025. 'I remember when I used to come to play for the national team and I didn't enjoy it. I just wanted to go home, to be honest,' playmaker Bonmatí, a two-time Ballon d'Or winner, said a few days before falling ill. 'It was tough to play here. The situation wasn't good. But now everything is better, there is more stability for everyone and that benefits the group.' The crisis prompted by the kiss on Hermoso — who was not called up by Tomé for the Euro 2025 squad — helped expedite changes that players had been demanding for a long time, including by some who refused to play for the national team even before the World Cup. "The conditions have changed a lot,' said Putellas, another two-time world player of the year. 'Especially in terms of travel, nutrition, training. Things have changed radically. Now we are enjoying conditions that are at the top level of the men's team. It's something that has taken a lot of effort and work by many people.' Putellas said it's clear that the structure provided for the women's team is much more professional now, including in areas such as marketing and communication. 'We are finally where we wanted to be for some time,' she said. 'Because we have pushed for it, and also because a lot of people have helped us. Now we are just ready to compete and enjoy it.' Rubiales was convicted in February and ordered to pay more than 10,000 euros ($11,700) in fines. He was prohibited from approaching Hermoso or communicating with her for a year. Prosecutors had asked for a prison sentence. Rubiales was acquitted of a charge of coercion for allegedly trying to make Hermoso downplay the kiss on the lips. Tomé left out Hermoso from the squad saying that 'there's a lot of competition in her position.' Spain established itself as one of the powerhouses in women's soccer by winning the World Cup and following it up by lifting the trophy of the inaugural Women's Nations League in 2024. It then just missed out on a medal by finishing fourth at the Paris Olympics, when it lost to Brazil in the semifinals and to Germany in the bronze-medal match. Spain still a favorite Spain has never reached a final at the European Championship. Its best result was a last-four appearance in 1997. It was eliminated in the quarterfinals at each of the last three Euros. Still, it's a team that includes Barcelona and Real Madrid stars — and they've been playing well. In early June, Cláudia Pina scored twice in Spain's 2-1 victory over defending European champion England in the Nations League. 'We have been carrying the 'favorite' tag for a few years now, since we won the World Cup," Bonmatí said. 'We are used to it and we take it with responsibility. There are other top teams and we need to respect them.' Even if Bonmatí needs time off, Spain will feel confident in the group stage. Spain had a 4-0 record this year against Portugal and Belgium — all in the group stage of the current Nations League edition. That included a 7-1 home victory over Portugal in April. 'Winning the European title would come as a confirmation that this is a historic generation for Spain's women's soccer,' Bonmatí said.

Kristaps Porzingis trade draws mixed reaction on social media

The second domino fell for the Celtics when they traded Kristaps Porzingis to the Hawks in a three-team deal with Atlanta and the Brooklyn Nets. Boston also sent a second-round pick to the Hawks, while the Nets will get Terance Mann and the Hawks' No. 22 overall pick. The Celtics, meanwhile, will get Georges Niang and a second-round pick while being able to get out from under Porzingis' hefty contract, which got the team out of the second apron. Advertisement The trade, first reported by ESPN's Shams Charania, comes less than 24 hours after Boston traded Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers. Naturally, social media had plenty to say about the Porzingis trade between the Celtics losing another key piece to their team, and Niang — who's from Massachusetts — being the player who grabbed Jaylen Brown's knee from the bench in Game 7 of the 2023 Eastern Conference semifinal between Boston and the Philadelphia 76ers. Matt Vautour: Celtics' trades will test Joe Mazzulla's coaching ability

How good a coach is Joe Mazzulla actually? He's about to be tested. Mazzulla does deserve credit for his role in leading the Celtics to the NBA title in 2024. He didn't just roll the ball out. There is a definite skill to being able to get superstar players to jell, play defense and sacrifice for the greater good. Advertisement Phil Jackson and Red Auerbach usually had the most talent and they're celebrated for making it work. Mazzulla deserves more credit because he did it on the fly. When Ime Udoka's off-the-court misdeeds led to his firing right before the 2022-23 season, the Celtics were forced to hire Mazzulla, who'd been their No. 2 assistant the year before. But he made it work. With all his quirky bluntness and love of blood sports, he guided them to Banner 18 in Year No. 2. Whether or not Mazzulla deserves the blame for the Celtics' unravelling against the Knicks doesn't even matter now. After the Celtics traded Jrue Holiday just before midnight on Monday and Kristaps Porzingis just before dinner on Tuesday, Mazzulla has a new and very different assignment. Advertisement Brad Stevens' trades have been expected for months. He made moves to get under the second apron by unloading players, who won't be at their peak when Jayson Tatum is healthy again. And he managed to Jedi-mind-trick his way into getting a younger player and two draft picks for Holiday, who was older and more expensive. But while all of that was necessary for the long-term future of the franchise, it makes Mazzulla's short-term job much harder. No longer will he take the floor with the best roster almost every night. A team with Brown, Derrick White, Payton Pritchard and Sam Hauser can win games and probably make the playoffs. That's (unsafely) assuming that there aren't more trades still coming. But depending on how the rest of the offseason goes, there will be a handful of Eastern Conference teams with a clear talent edge, as well as several in the West. Advertisement Mazzulla, who has former chess prodigy Josh Waitzkin on speed dial, is going to have to employ some gambits in Year 3 on the Celtics bench. He's going to have to game plan and prepare better than he's ever needed to before. Mazzulla shouldn't be expected to keep the Celtics in contention for a championship. This is going to be a flawed roster. A playoff berth with a middle seed is a successful year in the standings. Without Porzingis and the statuses of Al Horford and Luke Kornet up in the air, the Celtics still need to sort out the makeup for their frontcourt. That might involve developing younger players or piecing it together. Advertisement The challenge will be making the 2025-26 season a valuable bridge to 2026-27 and beyond. Ideally, there will be players who make key improvements that will make them more ready to contribute when Boston has a presumably healthy Jayson Tatum and a better roster. Can Mazzulla coax more than offense out of Anfernee Simons? The former Blazer, who averaged a team-high 19.3 points per game, will likely fill some of the scoring void left by Tatum, Porzingis and Holiday, who averaged a combined 57.4. But Simons has been a lousy defender in Portland, despite a frame and wingspan that suggests he should be better. Payton Pritchard got better under Mazzulla. Sam Hauser, too. So, how much more does Baylor Scheierman have to give? Can Neemias Queta do more with more minutes? Advertisement How much is in there and can Mazzulla extract it? The answer will define the success of the Celtics next year and the perception of Mazzulla for much longer than that. More Celtics content Read the original article on MassLive.
