Look up! There's a strong chance northern lights will put on a show this week
Heads up, skywatchers!
Scientists predict that the northern lights are about to put on a far-reaching show that should be visible across most of Canada, thanks to a coronal 'hole' in the sun that's sending a high-speed stream of charged particles toward Earth.
These intense auroras are expected to dance across the night sky on June 25 and 26, reaching all the way down into the northern United States.

'The aurora may become visible over some northern and upper Midwest states from New York to Idaho,' representatives for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) wrote in an update.

According to the SWPC, the Kp index, a measure of geomagnetic activity, is forecast to peak at 5.67. The Kp index ranges from zero to nine, and a higher Kp indicates a stronger chance for northern lights.

Often, the aurora oval is contained to more northern parts of Canada, but places like southern Ontario and Quebec, as well as states like Oregon, South Dakota and New York, will have a chance to glimpse them if the conditions are right.
To best view the aurora, it helps to get as far away from light pollution as possible and situate yourself in a north-facing vantage point, ideally so you can see the horizon. Of course, cloudy skies will always make a sighting less likely, as will the shorter summer nights, so your best chance to see them will be around midnight or into the early morning hours.

8 tornadoes confirmed in southern Saskatchewan on June 19, more under review
Environment Canada has confirmed that eight tornadoes touched down across southern Saskatchewan last Thursday, three of them in the Regina area. The weather agency is still reviewing other reports and says the final count could rise. While eight in one day might sound extreme, meteorologist Crawford Luke says the region typically sees up to 15 tornadoes over the course of a summer. Environment Canada is encouraging the public to report tornado sightings by tweeting with the hashtag #SKstorm or emailing the agency directly.

Tornado watch issued for eastern, central Alberta as thunderstorms expected
Parts of eastern and central Alberta along the Saskatchewan border were put under a tornado watch on Wednesday. Environment Canada said conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms which may produce tornadoes late Wednesday afternoon and evening. Severe thunderstorm watches were also issued for a broader area, as strong winds with gusts of up to 90 km/h, large hail of two to four cm and heavy rain are possible for much of eastern and northern Alberta. The national weather agency said most of the thunderstorms would be non-severe, with an exception of areas near the Saskatchewan border where supercell formation could occur. Fête nationale was hottest June day on record in Montreal
Tuesday's Fête nationale holiday was the hottest June day in Montreal since records started. Environment Canada says temperatures hit 35.6 C, breaking the all-time high for June set 61 years ago. The previous monthly high of 35 C was set on June 30, 1964, recorded at Montreal's Trudeau Airport, where records have been kept since 1942.
