Fifteen victims of UPSI bus crash still being treated in hospital, says Perak health director
IPOH, June 10 — A total of 15 victims injured in the crash involving a bus carrying Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students and a Perodua Alza along Jalan Raya Timur-Barat (JRTB) near Tasik Banding, Gerik, yesterday are still being treated in hospital while 18 others have been discharged.
Perak state health department director Dr Feisul Idzwan Mustapha said 10 are in Taiping Hospital, two in Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital here and three others (from the family in the Perodua Alza) are in Baling Hospital, Kedah.
'Eighteen others have been discharged and allowed to return home,' he told Bernama today, adding that those hospitalised are in stable condition.
Also, nine mental health and psychosocial support teams have been mobilised to provide support to the crash victims and their families.
Yesterday's crash killed 15 UPSI students when the bus they were on overturned in the crash. Another 33 were injured, including the bus driver and attendant, and the Perodua Alza driver. — Bernama

RM3,000 aid for families of UPSI students killed in crash
KUALA TERENGGANU: The Terengganu government will provide financial assistance of RM3,000 to each family of the 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students who perished in a bus crash on the East-West Highway (JRTB) near Tasik Banding, Gerik, Perak. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar said RM1,000 of the amount had already been disbursed to the affected families. He said a separate RM1,000 in aid will also be channelled to each of the 33 individuals who were injured in the crash. 'The state government is deeply saddened by this tragedy and remains committed to assisting those impacted. We also call on all Terengganu residents to continue praying for the victims and for their families to be granted strength during this difficult time,' he said in a statement today. On Monday, 15 UPSI students were killed when the chartered bus they were travelling in from Jertih to the university's main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak overturned after colliding with a Perodua Alza on the JRTB. The crash also left 33 others injured, including the bus driver and attendant, as well as the driver and three passengers of the Perodua Alza. Speaking to reporters, Ahmad Samsuri said he would personally hand over the financial aid to the victims' families next Tuesday. He said the state government would also cover all medical and hospital-related expenses, including surgery costs, and provide counselling sessions for victims and their families. 'The role of communities under the JPKK (Village Development and Security Committees) is also vital, and they have stepped up to offer extra comfort to affected families,' he said after presenting certificates of appointment to the president, vice-president, council members and honorary commissioners of the Terengganu Scouts at Wisma Darul Iman today. Meanwhile, Ahmad Samsuri urged all relevant quarters, including ministries, to conduct audits covering all aspects, such as law enforcement, road safety and bus operations, to prevent similar incidents. 'If a comprehensive audit cannot be carried out all at once, it can be done in phases, focusing first on high-risk locations,' he said.

Sarawak General Operations Force foils attempts to smuggle contraband goods worth nearly RM12 million

KUCHING: The Sarawak General Operations Force (GOF) has foiled several smuggling attempts involving various goods worth RM11.93 million during 'Op Taring Alpha' and 'Op Taring Awas/Batas' carried out at multiple locations across the state. Its deputy commander ACP Rosdi Inai said in the first operation carried out at 4.30 am yesterday, the GOF detained two trailer lorries in Sri Aman suspected of transporting smuggled goods. Advertisement 'Checks on both vehicles uncovered 21,500 cartons of white cigarettes and 51,216 litres of liquor, believed to have been brought in without the payment of duties and valid permits. 'Two local men aged 44 and 50 were also detained, while the two trailer lorries along with four containers were seized. The seizure is estimated to be worth RM10.47 million,' he said in a statement here today. Rosdi said in the second operation on June 8 at about 9.30 pm, the GOF detained two lorries in Bau suspected of transporting rattan without valid documents, and arrested two local men aged 25 and 33. 'Inspections uncovered 15 tonnes of rattan, with the total seizure valued at RM620,000,' he said. Meanwhile, Rosdi said in two separate operations on June 6, the GOF seized frozen products in Bau district and arrested a 49-year-old local man. 'At the first location, a lorry carrying 7,800 kilogrammes of frozen meat without a permit was detained at 10.05 pm, with the seizure valued at approximately RM488,600. 'At the second location, at 6.10 am in Padawan, a 27-year-old man was detained. A Toyota Harrier SUV, reported to have been fraudulently obtained, was seized. The vehicle is estimated to be worth RM175,000,' he said.
