Sampdoria ‘no longer relegated from Serie B' with iconic club ‘revived' just four days after they were doomed

The Sun18-05-2025

SAMPDORIA will no longer be automatically relegated from Serie B – just four days after they were doomed to life in Italy's third tier.
The iconic club set European football alight in the late 80s and early 90s, culminating in Serie A glory in 1991.

The same period also saw Sampdoria clinch four Italian Cups and a European Cup Winners' Cup thanks to the prowess of stars like Gianluca Vialli and Roberto Mancini.
But their fortunes have since steadily declined, eventually resulting in a shock relegation to Serie B in 2023.
However, the club has endured even more pain in the lower leagues.
And just four days ago, Sampdoria fans' worst fears were realised as they finished 18th to suffer automatic relegation to Serie C.
Yet in a shock twist, they have now been handed a dramatic lifeline.
Fellow Serie B strugglers Brescia finished 15th this term, just two points ahead of Sampdoria.
But they have now been deducted four points as a penalty for financial issues, sending them to 18th place instead.
It means Sampdoria moved into 17th, and therefore have qualified for a relegation play-off against Salernitana, now in 16th.
Sampdoria take the place of Frosinone, who are the main beneficiaries of Bresca's points deduction and have confirmed their survival with a 15th-place finish.
But it gives Sampdoria a second bite of the cherry, with a two-legged tie now taking place to determine their fate.
It is certainly an ending dramatic enough to match their disastrous season, which has seen four managers enter the dugout.
Italy legend Andrea Pirlo was sacked in August after taking just one point from Sampdoria's opening three games.
Andrea Sottil and Leonardo Semplici were also given their marching orders, while Alberico Evani could now stay should the playoffs go his way.
Sampdoria used an incredible 38 players this season, including five different goalkeepers.
But they will be hoping star players like ex-Liverpool striker Fabio Borini and former England U21s ace Ronaldo Vieira can finally step up to the plate.

Leaving Cert Irish Paper 2 'very manageable' with no surprises at either level

The Leaving Cert Irish Paper 2 will have had students breathing a sigh of relief, according to Irish teacher at Moyle Park College, Dublin, Stephen Doyle. The Studyclix subject expert said that there is "no doubt" the paper would have been well received. Advertisement 'The two reading comprehensions were well chosen - the first text focused on Rory Gallagher and music while the second passage about Sport in Ireland was very relevant and easy to relate to," Mr Doyle said. "Both were very manageable. The grammar threw up no surprises while the 6b questions were a bit more specific than in previous years. "A sigh of relief could be heard as the long awaited Hurlamaboc made an appearance in the prose section. Students were expecting it last year but it didn't appear; thankfully this year it did. Students had an option between Hurlamaboc and Oisín i dTír na nÓg with the questions being very straightforward with no surprises. 'Again students would have been happy with the choice of poems in the poetry section. An Spailpín Fánach and Colscaradh appeared on this year's paper. There were no difficult or tricky questions. Any student who had prepared these poems will be very happy with the questions asked." Advertisement The final section of the paper, Litríocht Breise, offered "good variety and plenty of choice," according to Mr Doyle. "The question on An Trial and A thig Ná Tit orm was straightforward and focused on the case of the main character. While the questions on Gafa and Canary Wharf focused on the relationships between the characters," he said. 'This paper rewarded students who had studied their texts well and could write clearly about what they had learned. Students will be happy with this one.' The "student-friendly" Ordinary Level Paper 2 also had no surprise questions, Mr Doyle added, and it covered the basics well. "The reading comprehensions focused on the Olympics and the Phoenix Park (nature), topics that were accessible and relatable for students. The prose section offered a choice between Dís, Oisín i dTír na nÓg and Hurlamaboc, which was expected and gave students good options," he said. 'The poetry section included Mo Ghrá-sa, An tEarrach Thiar and Colscaradh, with straightforward questions that tested students' understanding of the main themes and content. There were no surprise questions. Overall, this paper provided ordinary level students with plenty of opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge successfully.'

Twice Superbike champ Razgatlioglu to ride for Pramac in MotoGP in 2026

June 10 (Reuters) - Twice World Superbike champion Toprak Razgatlioglu will make the switch to MotoGP in 2026 after agreeing to join the Prima Pramac Racing team, Yamaha announced on Tuesday. Razgatlioglu, the first Turkish Superbike world champion who is known for his showmanship and has 63 wins, won his first title with Yamaha in 2021 before making the switch to BMW, winning the title again in 2024. Pramac made the switch from Ducati bikes to Yamaha this season. Razgatlioglu is currently second in the 2025 Superbike championship. "Toprak, the most victorious Yamaha rider of all time in Superbike, has proven to be an exceptional talent, securing the WorldSBK Title twice, which is no mean feat," Paolo Pavesio, the managing director of Yamaha Racing, said in a statement. "His transition to MotoGP is both a 'homecoming' and an exciting new challenge that's been set up with the clear goal of progressive growth over time." Razgatlioglu had previously tested the Yamaha bike in 2023. Pramac currently have Jack Miller and Miguel Oliveira as their riders this season, with Yamaha saying the 2026 lineup will be confirmed in due course. Current WorldSBK leader Nicolo Bulega is also set to join Ducati's MotoGP test team next year ahead of a potential switch in 2027 when MotoGP's new regulations come into effect.

F1 calendar 2026: out goes Imola, in comes Madrid

F1 calendar 2026: out goes Imola, in comes Madrid Farewell idyllic racetrack, hello yet another street circuit… Skip 1 photos in the image carousel and continue reading Turn on Javascript to see all the available pictures. The 2026 F1 calendar has been announced, and as expected Imola has fallen by the wayside and been replaced by that new street track in Madrid. Anyone else hear crickets chirping? The only asterisk (literally, as you'll see from the calendar below) is that the new race in the Spanish capital is 'subject to FIA circuit homologation'... recent reports have suggested that building work is, er, behind schedule. Uh oh. Still, they've got until September next year for all that concrete to set. Advertisement - Page continues below Meanwhile there's been a victory for common sense as Miami and Canada finally go back-to-back (albeit with a three-week gap), with no trip out to Montreal in the middle of the European leg. That's been made possible by Monaco and the Spanish GP (yep, Barcelona has survived) slipping back into June. Local suncream sales will surely skyrocket. Belgium begins its new life as F1's first rotational race mid July, while the Dutch Grand Prix makes its last bow before its contract expires. Zandvoort, we'll miss your banked corners and orange flares. Finally, the title run-in will be held over two triple headers: the US, Mexican and Brazilian Grands Prix, followed by Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi three weeks before Christmas.
