Sampdoria ‘no longer relegated from Serie B' with iconic club ‘revived' just four days after they were doomed

The Sun18-05-2025

SAMPDORIA will no longer be automatically relegated from Serie B – just four days after they were doomed to life in Italy's third tier.
The iconic club set European football alight in the late 80s and early 90s, culminating in Serie A glory in 1991.

The same period also saw Sampdoria clinch four Italian Cups and a European Cup Winners' Cup thanks to the prowess of stars like Gianluca Vialli and Roberto Mancini.
But their fortunes have since steadily declined, eventually resulting in a shock relegation to Serie B in 2023.
However, the club has endured even more pain in the lower leagues.
And just four days ago, Sampdoria fans' worst fears were realised as they finished 18th to suffer automatic relegation to Serie C.
Yet in a shock twist, they have now been handed a dramatic lifeline.
Fellow Serie B strugglers Brescia finished 15th this term, just two points ahead of Sampdoria.
But they have now been deducted four points as a penalty for financial issues, sending them to 18th place instead.
It means Sampdoria moved into 17th, and therefore have qualified for a relegation play-off against Salernitana, now in 16th.
Sampdoria take the place of Frosinone, who are the main beneficiaries of Bresca's points deduction and have confirmed their survival with a 15th-place finish.
But it gives Sampdoria a second bite of the cherry, with a two-legged tie now taking place to determine their fate.
It is certainly an ending dramatic enough to match their disastrous season, which has seen four managers enter the dugout.
Italy legend Andrea Pirlo was sacked in August after taking just one point from Sampdoria's opening three games.
Andrea Sottil and Leonardo Semplici were also given their marching orders, while Alberico Evani could now stay should the playoffs go his way.
Sampdoria used an incredible 38 players this season, including five different goalkeepers.
But they will be hoping star players like ex-Liverpool striker Fabio Borini and former England U21s ace Ronaldo Vieira can finally step up to the plate.

'Overwhelmed' Wassell relishing return to Scotland squad

Emma Wassell says the gallows humour of the Scotland dressing room is keeping a smile on her face during what she describes as an "overwhelming" return to the international major surgery to remove a tumour that was found in her chest last September, the 30-year-old lock is now targeting August's World Cup in England after being included in the initial 38-woman training she readjusts to the demands of international rugby, the former Loughborough Lightning star admits she's enjoying some lively locker-room banter."They keep me very, very humble shall I say," Wassell said."I get a lot of grief" Any time the tumour's brought up everyone's like; 'oh, she had a tumour? Who knew?', we joke about it a lot. "There's a lot of banter around and any time I don't get my way, I try to say; 'guys, I had a tumour', and they're like 'shut up!', so it's pretty light-hearted."The fact she can now laugh about it all shows not just how far she's come physically, but also mentally. Not that the reintroduction to international-level training has been easy."Something I've found quite overwhelming - given I've trained for three or four months myself – is to now be put back in this environment where all the girls are pushing each other and there's a level of pressure around you. "It's been a little bit overwhelming but in the best way possible. "Her aim now is making the final World Cup squad for a tournament she thinks could be a game-changer for Scottish rugby."It's the closest I'll definitely get to a home World Cup and I just think it could be huge for women's rugby in general," she added."For Scotland, it will really push us on a bit more in terms of growing the game."

What could Gittens bring to the Chelsea flanks?

Chelsea are interested in a talented young winger - far from the first time that storyline has appeared during a transfer latest name on their lips is Borussia Dortmund's Jamie predominantly left-winger, 20, has caught the eye after a breakthrough 2024-25 season in the Bundesliga where he scored 12 goals and provided five assists across 48 games in all purple patch came over Christmas, scoring or assisting in six out of seven games between November and January - but, notably, did find the net just once more after the amount of recruitment in attacking areas for Chelsea in recent seasons, fans might well be thinking - in the words of DJ Khaled - 'another one'?However, with Jadon Sancho returning to Manchester United after his loan spell, Mykhailo Mudryk's future still unclear and Raheem Sterling likely to be heading for the exit, it does leave the Blues light on that side of the pitch before a campaign where they will need more depth to cope with Champions League Chelsea choosing against signing Sancho permanently, it seems Gittens is the replacement, but how does he compare? When it comes to output, Gittens just comes out on top for combined goals and assists, with 17 compared to Sancho's 15. However, they were equal in their goalscoring efficiency, with both having a shot conversion rate of 15.6%.Sancho's strength lay in what he did for others, creating more chances than Gittens playing more passes into the box and winning possession in the final third more often, according to on the other hand, was particularly strong on what he did with the ball at his feet. The England Under-21 international proved higher for dribbles completed (3.6 to 2.2), 10 or more progressive carries (181 to 133), duels won per 90 (7.2 to 3.6) and then winning over half of those duels (50.1% as opposed to Sancho's 44.7%).In Enzo Maresca's time at Chelsea, wingers have been interchangeable, with players often switching positions during matches. The right-hand option has generally been Noni Madueke and he has excelled with his output in goals and assists per 90 edges out Gittens at 0.6 compared with 0.5, while he had also more shots per 90 (3.5) and more shots on target per 90 (1.5) than both Gittens and 2024-25 also featured more touches in the opposition box per 90 than the other two (8.6 compared to 6.0 and 6.5).The numbers suggest there is still room for improvement in Gittens' game, and the drop-off towards the end of the season that saw him start only three of the final 10 matches could be a Chelsea often favour potential over ready-made and, at just 20 years old, he has time on his side to become to become a top-level talent.

Tottenham star Yves Bissouma reveals emotional private messages with Ange Postecoglou after his Spurs sacking

Yves Bissouma has posted on social media the private messages he shared with Ange Postecoglou after the Aussie manager was sacked by Tottenham last week. Postecoglou was relieved of his duties on Friday, just 16 days after leading Spurs to their first trophy in 17 years as they beat Manchester United in the Europa League final. Many of the Tottenham squad - including captain Son Heung-min and James Maddison - were quick to post emotional messages of gratitude to Postecoglou, and Bissouma has now revealed his own text exchange with his former manager on Snapchat. The conversation begins with Postecoglou writing: 'Hi Biss. Sorry I missed your call. I am very proud of you. It was an honour to share a dressing room with you and appreciate how much you believed in what we were trying to achieve. 'I wish you only the best for the future. I will always be following. Much love from my family to yours.' Bissouma replied: 'Thank you gaffer and thank you really much for everything on and off the pitch I'll always be grateful. The way you believed me and trusted me was incredible. 'I'm gonna miss you but it's football life. Got a lot to be said but I think you know what I'm thinking about you already so I'm just wishing you all the best for the future and may God protect you and your family. #bigboss love.' The exchange ended with Postecoglou responding: 'Always by your side Biss'. The heartfelt farewell message from Bissouma indicates how popular Postecoglou was with his players who are reportedly furious with the decision to sack him. Spurs finished down in 17th and suffered 22 league defeats in the 2024-25 season, but many felt Postecoglou deserved a chance to put their domestic form right after their Europa League triumph in Bilbao. However, chairman Daniel Levy opted to axe Postecoglou, and the search to find his successor is gathering pace. Mail Sport understands that the north London club are closing in on appointing Brentford boss Thomas Frank as their new manager after positive talks. Spurs will have to pay a hefty compensation fee for the Dane, but appear ready to finalise a deal as they look to move on from Postecoglou quickly.
