Army Chief Gen Upendra Dwivedi on Friday presented the Badge of Sacrifice and the Certificate of Honour to the next of kin of several army personnel, who have laid down their lives in the line of duty. The awards -- a deeply symbolic tribute to valour and supreme sacrifice -- were conferred to honour officers, junior commissioned officers and other ranks who were killed in enemy and terrorist action while serving the nation, a senior official said.Instituted in July 1999, the Badge of Sacrifice and Certificate of Honour have since been bestowed upon the families of bravehearts from conflicts dating back to 1947. The first official presentation was held on Vijay Diwas on December 16, 1999, marking a significant milestone in the army's continued commitment to remembering its bravehearts, he added.The presentation ceremony at the Manekshaw Centre took place a day after the formal Defence Investiture Ceremony, which was conducted at the Rashtrapati Bhavan here.Gen Dwivedi presented the Badge of Sacrifice and Certificate of Honour to the next of kin of Colonel Manpreet Singh, Major Aashish Dhonchak, Captain Deepak Singh, Havildar Rohit Kumar, Naik Dilwar Khan, Rifleman Ravi Kumar, Sepoy Pradeep Singh and also to the next of kin of Deputy Superintendent of Police Himayun Muzzammil Bhat (Jammu and Kashmir Police) and Vijayan Kutty G (Border Road Organisation).The Badge of Sacrifice, a 24-carat gold-plated insignia, is individually engraved with the army number, rank and name of the soldier. On the reverse, the Indian Army insignia is inscribed, symbolising eternal remembrance, the official said.The Certificate of Honour is equally distinguished -- crafted on permanent-finish 24-carat gold foil and set within a gold-plated frame. Designed by the Directorate of Indian Army Veterans, these honours reflect both the aesthetic dignity and enduring respect the army holds for its fallen heroes , he added.The Indian Army continues to uphold its deep-rooted traditions of honour, duty and sacrifice, ensuring that every fallen soldier is remembered with dignity and reverence, the official said.

Now, India is preparing to launch another highly potent weapon which is an indigenous 155mm artillery shell developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). This homemade 155mm artillery shell will not only add more muscle to the might of the Indian Army but also serve as a warning to China as it could strengthen India's battlefield edge from the mountains of Ladakh to the Line of Control (LoC). Four variants of this next-gen artillery ammunition have been successfully developed and tested by the DRDO over the past two years. This is a massive step forward in India's journey toward self-reliance in defense manufacturing. For a long time, India had largely relied on Russia and Israel for artillery shells, but with its own advanced 155mm ammunition nearly ready, that dependency may soon end. Nearly two feet long, these shells weigh approximately 45 kg each and their range is about 32 km. The user trials are scheduled for November this year. Upon clearance, mass production will begin for deployment across India's armed forces. Apart from enhancing India's military infrastructure, this project is also a showcase of public-private partnership in defense. Under DRDO's Development-cum-Production Partner (DCPP) model, two companies, Jai Ammunition Ltd (a Reliance Infrastructure subsidiary) and Yantra India Ltd, a state-owned firm, have been shortlisted to co-develop and mass-produce the shells. Both the companies have worked closely with DRDO over the past two years, and will now produce prototypes for the Indian Army's evaluation. If approved, it could generate large-scale orders and help reduce India's massive import bill on defense supplies. Over the next decade, India's artillery ammunition market is projected to be worth over Rs 10,000 crore. Also, given their superior technology, the shells will be considered for exports. India's reputation as the developer and manufacturer of world-class weapons at reasonable price could make India a sought-after player in the global arms market.

Woman Maoist operative on the run for 15 years arrested in Bihar
Patna: In a significant breakthrough in the ongoing anti-LWE operations, the Jamui Police in Bihar on Saturday arrested Sarita Soren a.k.a. Sita Soren, a female Maoist operative who had been absconding for the last 15 years. The arrest took place near Karma village, an official said. The development marks the second major success within three days for the district police as the force on Thursday nabbed another long-absconding Maoist operative involved in serious cases from as far back as 2005. Jamui Superintendent of Police Madan Kumar Anand confirmed the arrest and said that Sarita Soren had been on the police radar for years but consistently evaded capture. Acting on an Intelligence input, a joint team comprising Jamui Police, STF personnel, and officers from the technical cell launched a swift operation and surrounded her maternal home in Karma, successfully apprehending her. "Sarita Soren was involved in the 2010 Maoist attack in Chakai which claimed two lives. She also served as a key member of the female Maoist squad," SP Anand stated. Several cases, including charges under the Arms Act and murder, are registered against her. Her prolonged evasion and strategic role within the Maoist ranks made her one of the most wanted operatives in the region. The police consider her arrest a major blow to Maoist activities in the Jhajha-Chakai belt. Earlier on Thursday, Jamui Police arrested Naresh Ravidas a.k.a. Patal Ravidas, a notorious Maoist operative and former area commander, from Teliyadih village under the Jhajha police station area. On January 5, 2005, he was allegedly involved in the ambush and killed then Munger SP K.C. Surendra Babu and five other police personnel in the Bhimbandh forest area. The deadly attack near Peshra village sent shockwaves across Bihar and exposed critical gaps in the state's security preparedness at that time. In 2008, he was also accused of being involved in a Maoist attack at Belhar village that claimed five lives of innocent civilians in Banka district. The back-to-back arrests reflect increased pressure on Naxalite groups in Bihar and reinforce the state police's commitment to dismantling remaining insurgent networks.

Amit Shah felicitates Chhattisgarh police officers for historic success in anti-Naxal operation
RAIPUR: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday met with Chhattisgarh's senior police and intelligence officers who played a pivotal role in recent anti-Naxal operations in LWE affected regions. Shah felicitated Chhattisgarh Director General of Police Arun Dev Gautam, Vivekananda Sinha, additional DG (Anti-Naxal ops), P Sundarraj, Bastar range inspector general of police and three SPs. The meeting took place in New Delhi, where Shah personally congratulated the team on what is being hailed as one of the most significant counter-insurgency successes ever in the fight against Left-Wing Extremism. Chhattisgarh chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai and deputy CM Vijay Sharma were present during the meeting. In a post on social media platform X, Shah wrote, 'Met the officers who played a crucial role in the recent anti-Naxal operations and congratulated them on the historic success of these operations. I am eager to meet the brave jawans who made these operations successful with their courage and will soon visit Chhattisgarh to meet them. Modi government is committed to freeing India from the menace of Naxalism.' Shah's remarks come in the wake of a major operation conducted from May 18-21 in Abujhmarh region — one of the most remote and challenging terrains in central India. In a critical encounter on May 21, security forces gunned down 27 Maoists, including the CPI (Maoist) General Secretary and Polit Bureau member Basavaraju alias Gaganna. He was one of the most wanted Maoist leaders in the country. A substantial cache of arms and ammunition was also recovered. Security forces involved in the operation included District Reserve Guard (DRG) units from Narayanpur, Dantewada, Kondagaon, and Bijapur districts, working in coordination under the leadership of top police officials. During the felicitation event, Shah also honoured Prabhat Kumar, SP Narayanpur, Jitendra Yadav, Bijapurand Shalabh Sinha, SP Bastar, in presence of CM Sai, state home minister Sharma, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, Director of Intelligence Bureau Tapan Deka, and several senior officers from the Centre and state security apparatus. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai in a message to Shah said, 'It is due to your strong resolve and inspiring leadership that historic success is becoming possible in the fight against Naxalism in Chhattisgarh. This battle to end red terror is at a decisive turning point, and by March 2026, the complete eradication of Maoism from both the state and the nation is certain. Our officers and brave personnel of the security forces are engaged in the mission to make the country free of Naxalism with unmatched courage and valour.
