Anwar chairs Madani Scholars' Forum discussing future of public transport
PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim chaired the 6th Series of the Malaysia Madani Scholars' Forum (FIM) on Wednesday (June 4) night, which discussed issues related to public transport.
The forum, held at Prasarana Tower here, deliberated on the topic "Transport for the People: Balancing Affordability, Quality and Sustainability of Public Transport".
Also participating as panellists were Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Prasarana Malaysia Berhad Group President and Chief Executive Officer Mohd Azharuddin Mat Sah and Universiti Putra Malaysia Vice-Chancellor Datuk Prof Dr Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah.
The Higher Education Ministry organised the forum.
During the forum, panellists and the audience shared their views on the need to improve the public transport network, particularly in addressing issues of congestion, reliability and access for low-income groups.
The periodically organised forum serves to integrate the perspectives of stakeholders, policymakers and academics on public policies. – Bernama

National Youth Day celebration to showcase elements of Asean
KUALA LUMPUR: The National Youth Day (HBN) celebration on June 13-15 will be unique as it will showcase elements of Asean, in line with Malaysia's Chairmanship of Asean 2025. The HBN secretariat said the programme for the celebration at Dataran Merdeka includes the Asean Pavillion and Asean Concert to create the spirit of the Asean community and strengthen the culture of Asean countries among the youth. This theme also aligns with the Madani government's efforts to empower youths through various strategic initiatives as well as the values of confidence within the Madani framework,' it added. With the targeted presence of 4 million visitors, the Youth and Sports Ministry, through the National Youth and Sports Department (JBSN), has activated the HBN celebration at the grassroots level by implementing the Semarak HBN initiative in 113 districts nationwide since May 15. At the national level, the Semarak HBN initiative has been further enlivened by the inclusion of the National Youth Convention; eSports games and activities; career and technical and vocational education and training (TVET) carnivals; as well as programmes on fitness, leadership, arts, music and culture and awareness of mental health and cyberbullying. Other programmes include the Suara Belia (Voice of the Youth) podcast; the recitation of the Malaysian Youth Pledge at various levels; the 2025 HBN Special Islamic Affairs Premier Forum; and the implementation of Special Friday sermons nationwide through the collaboration of the Islamic Development Department of Malaysia (Jakim) and State Islamic Religious departments. "Conceptualised as a festival and based on 15 segments/ports, it is an initiative with a 'youth for youth' approach that is designed to meet the needs and wants of today's youth. Malaysia supports June 14 Thailand-Cambodia border talks, says Anwar
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said he had spoken with his Thai and Cambodian counterparts and supported the measures they have taken. PUTRAJAYA : Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim says Malaysia supports the measures taken by Thailand and Cambodia in addressing the border dispute involving both countries. Anwar said that Malaysia, as the Asean chair in 2025, is prepared to follow the development of the negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia that is slated for June 14, in addition to providing the cooperation required in the talks. 'I spoke with both the prime ministers (of Thailand and Cambodia) and they have taken several measures that we support, namely the June 14 talks regarding the Thailand-Cambodia border dispute. 'I'm ready to participate and provide the cooperation required. So far, both governments have taken the stance of continuing negotiations amicably,' he told the media after performing the solat sunat Aidiladha with about 15,000 congregants at Masjid Putra here today. On May 28, Thai and Cambodian troops were involved in a brief skirmish in Thailand's Ubon Ratchathani province which borders Cambodia's Preah Vihear province. A Cambodian soldier was reportedly killed in the incident. Cambodia has since announced its intention to bring the border dispute to the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Thailand, meanwhile, has reportedly reiterated its commitment to resolving the issue peacefully in accordance with international law, as well as existing agreements and memoranda with Cambodia. Following the tension, the two neighbours have agreed to discuss the issue through the Joint Boundary Commission scheduled to be held in Phnom Penh on June 14. This is expected to be a crucial step towards a peaceful long-term resolution between the two Asean neighbours.
