Blundering Rangers referee let down by 'friends' as ex Premier League whistler insists VAR failed 'foolproof' test

Daily Record19-05-2025

Referee Nick Walsh and the match officials opted against giving a goal to the Light Blues at Easter Road - sparking fury from the Gers' players
Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher reckons the SFA ditched goal-line technology due to their belief in VAR.
But former Liverpool star Stephen Warnock reckons that the snub comes down to cost in the wake of Rangers star Nicolas Raskin 's no goal against Hibs.

The midfielder thought he'd doubled the visitors lead at Easter Road when his strike appeared to have crossed the line – but it wasn't spotted by ref Nick Walsh and David Gray's men immediately went up the other end to equalise.

VAR checked the incident but the SFA have since released guidance saying there was no conclusive evidence it did in fact go in.
After the game, interim boss Barry Ferguson branded it 'mind-blowing' and 'baffling' and in a scathing statement Rangers demanded to raise the of goal-line technology issue with the SFA.
And speaking to Sky Sports' Ref Watch, Gallagher offered man in the middle Walsh a defence stating: "[The referee] needed a little help from his friends.
"It does look over the line, there's no doubt about that. They haven't got GDS [goal decision system] because they feel they can incorporate it into the VAR system.
"But if you look at it, the answer was they had no conclusive evidence it was over the line, but it certainly does look over.
"What didn't help is they say it's not a goal and then it goes to the other end and Hibs equalise.

"They're doubly aggrieved because there's a two-goal swing, instead of being 2-0 it ends up 1-1 so they're massively, massively aggrieved."
Gallagher went on to offer an insight in the Hampden chiefs discussions over the technology with their English counterparts: "The Scottish FA came to the Premier League and looked at what was already in place, VAR, and they've got a slightly different system which isn't as complicated as the Premier League system.
"All I can think is they felt they could incorporate [goal-line technology] as part of their system and that the VAR would be able to see from pictures whether the ball was over the line. As it is, looking at that, it isn't as foolproof as people maybe thought."

But an unimpressed Warnock claimed the Premiership was missing a VAR "necessity" due to finances.
He added: "It's my favourite piece of kit, it's one that's black-and-white, it works, it's one that we very rarely question.
"When the referee points to his watch and gives it 'no' or 'it's a goal' we know exactly where we stand with it, it's very trusting.
"It's obviously just a case of cost, that's the only stumbling point of it. It's a necessity in any league to have that."

Arne Slot meets with Liverpool target as departing star speaks after exit

Arne Slot is wasting no time getting stuck into the transfer market after bringing in Jeremie Frimpong to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back, while Liverpool are also hopeful of signing Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Florian Wirtz Liverpool have a big challenge ahead of them this summer as Arne Slot looks to build on his Premier League title-winning squad to ensure the Reds remain in contention to retain their crown. The Dutchman enjoyed an incredible first season at Anfield as his side cruised to the title, beating nearest rivals Arsenal by 10 points. Slot has had challenges in this window after Trent Alexander-Arnold decided to leave Liverpool, but the Reds were able to get a transfer fee of around £10million for their boyhood talent. ‌ The club moved quickly to find his replacement as they snapped up Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen. ‌ Liverpool are also chasing more depth in midfield. Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz is top of Slot's wishlist while Lyon's Rayan Cherki has also been linked. Mirror Football has taken a look at the top Liverpool transfer news as the club continues to be active early in the window. Slot holds talks with Cherki Cherki is set to have huge interest in him this summer after his fantastic season with Lyon, where he registered 12 goals and 19 assists across all competitions. Liverpool's rivals Manchester City have also been strongly linked with signing Cherki as Guardiola looks for more quality further up the pitch. But the Reds are hoping to stay in the mix for Cherki in the event a move for Wirtz is blocked - with Leverkusen chasing around £125m for their star player. ‌ Slot is desperate for more depth in the No 10 role and according to the Athletic, he held talks with Cherki shortly after the club's final game of the season against Crystal Palace. Even though Wirtz is much higher up his wishlist, the discussions had been tabled before the possibility of signing him emerged, and Slot wanted to honour his word to speak to the France Under 21 star. Cherki remains a back-up option for Liverpool and the playmaker would have been a primary target had Wirtz resisted a move to Anfield. ‌ But with Wirtz receptive to the idea of joining Liverpool, City now look likely to sign Cherki after they themselves were turned down by the Leverkusen player. Kelleher speaks after Anfield exit Liverpool have confirmed their second major outgoing this summer after Alexander-Arnold's exit - with goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher leaving for Brentford. The Irishman has been forced to accept a back-up role at Anfield behind Slot's first choice Alisson, though he has impressed when given a chance to play in the Brazilian's place. ‌ Kelleher deputised 20 times for Liverpool this season after Alisson struggled on the sidelines with injury and he will now be looking forward to becoming a No 1 option for the Bees after they sold Mark Flekken. Speaking for the first time since signing for Thomas Frank's men, Kelleher said it was "not difficult" for him to leave Liverpool because of the lack of opportunities. ‌ "I'm buzzing, I'm really happy to be here. I don't think it was very difficult for me to leave [Liverpool]. I felt for my own career that the time was right for me to go, to be a no.1 and to play every week. "I heard of some interest a number of weeks ago. Once I knew Brentford was in for me, it was definitely one I was really excited about and wanted to do as quickly as possible. "When I come back for pre-season, all focus will be on what I want to do next year; to work on certain goals and what I need to improve on, and to have a really good season for Brentford." ‌ Neville stunned by Liverpool's Trent deal Alexander-Arnold joining Real Madrid came as no surprise to anyone - but what caught some people off guard was the fact the La Liga side decided to pay £10m for him, despite the player becoming a free agent at the end of the month. Madrid splashed the cash to ensure the England right-back was available for their Club World Cup campaign in the United States, which has a total prize of around £100m for the winner. Alexander-Arnold is set to slot straight into Xabi Alonso's team due to their lack of options at right-back, which is another factor why Madrid were so keen to wrap up the deal as quickly as possible. ‌ Gary Neville has led the baffled reaction over how Liverpool were able to collect such a fee despite most expecting the boyhood star to leave on a free transfer. "Honestly, no, I mean, I'm stunned by that really, that £10m has changed hands for, but there is £100m pounds at stake in this World Club Championship and Real Madrid have got a great chance of doing it," he said on the It's Called Soccer podcast on the US Overlap channel. ‌ "So you imagine if he plays in this tournament, they haven't got a right back that's playing there naturally at this moment in time. So it could be money well spent in four or five weeks. "I just find it crazy that you're spending £10m to have a player for five, six games. It's incredible."

Man Utd 'agree' Bryan Mbeumo deal as summer transfer collapses

Manchester United are eyeing a move for Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford after already completing a deal for Matheus Cunha this summer as Ruben Amorim looks to strengthen his squad It's been a busy start to the transfer window for Manchester United. And perhaps it should be no surprise after a dismal 2024/25 season. Ruben Amorim has already added Matheus Cunha to their squad after activating his £62.5million release clause and now United look set to land another Premier League star. Bryan Mbeumo, fresh from bagging 20 goals for Brentford, is keen to make the move as the Red Devils move on after missing out on Liam Delap. ‌ It's not all been plain sailing as Bruno Fernandes ' futures sees plenty of speculation. The Portuguese star has turned down a move to the Saudi Pro League however. ‌ The club will hope to facilitate exits for the likes of Marcus Rashford and Antony however. And Jadon Sancho will likely be on the list of exits in the coming months too. Mirror Football Mbeumo 'verbal agreement' News broke on Monday evening that Bryan Mbeumo preferred a move to Manchester United over the likes of Newcastle and Arsenal, and not it appears the forward has an agreement with the Red Devils ahead of a move. Sky in Germany report that Mbeumo has made a verbal commitment to the club and United are 'optimistic' of getting a deal over the line with Brentford. Negotiations between clubs are said to get underway to finalise a deal. United monitor Donnarumma Manchester United are among a handful of clubs monitoring Gianluigi Donnarumma. The Paris Saint-Germain star continues to see contract talks drag on with the Champions League winners. ‌ Fresh from playing in PSG's triumphant Champions League campaign, which saw a 5-0 thrashing of Inter Milan in the final, Donnarumma's future appears to be up in the air. The 26-year-old's contract is set to expire next summer. Talks over an extension have already taken place and the club have tabled a proposal. Foot Mercato, via GFFN, however, reveal that Donnarumma has plenty of admirers among Europe's elite and they are lurkin in case the shot-stopper opts against signing a new deal. United are among those clubs and a move for Donnarumma would appeal given there are still doubts over Andre Onana following another mixed season for the Cameroon star. ‌ Sancho deal collapse Chelsea are set to pay Manchester United £5million after failing to reach an agreement to make Jadon Sancho's loan move permanent. Sancho spent the season on loan at Stamford Bride and the Blues were obligated to make the deal permanent after finishing higher than 14th in the Premier League. But the west London side did have a caveat in the deal which would allow them to renege on that commitment providing they cough up a £5m feel. That will now transpire. Chelsea are said to have wanted to retain Sancho's services but could not come to an agreement with the winger. The Blues did not want to match the salary he was earning at United.
