Legal storm hits PM, Dr M unfurls 'big umbrella'
The Kuala Lumpur High Court has denied Anwar Ibrahim's bid to suspend his ex-aide Yusoff Rawther's civil suit in relation to a sexual assault allegation.
Ordering that the trial proceeds on June 16 as scheduled, the court further ruled that the eight constitutional questions the prime minister sought to refer to the Federal Court did not meet the required threshold.
Anwar has insisted that his bid to suspend the lawsuit was never about seeking personal immunity from litigation but 'concerns the integrity of our constitutional system and the need to ensure that high public office is protected from litigation that may be strategically timed, politically motivated, or institutionally disruptive'.
Adding to the prime minister's list of political headaches, his age-defying nemesis, Dr Mahathir Mohamad - now well into his wizard years - has unveiled another grand scheme to unseat his former apprentice and 'save the Malays'.
The politician, who is just a month away from blowing out 100 birthday candles, unveiled a new Malay secretariat committee - pitched as a 'big umbrella' for the community.

Daim's dynasty under fire, his widow fires back
The MACC has secured approval to seize Daim Zainuddin's Ilham Tower once again, much to the frustration of the late former finance minister's lawyers, who have accused the commission of 'playing musical chairs with the law'.
This development follows closely after the Kuala Lumpur High Court granted permission for the commission to seize seven properties belonging to Daim's family.
Among the assets seized through an ex parte application are three luxury homes in London and a bank account reportedly valued at RM758.2 million.
Daim's widow Na'imah Abdul Khalid has vowed to challenge the seizure and 'to not bow down to bullies'.
'A line has been crossed. If we do not resist, there may soon be no lines left at all, then no Malaysian will be safe from the reach of unchecked power,' she emphasised.

Rafizi in green, trading blows with Anwar?
Former law minister Zaid Ibrahim has expressed a desire to see former PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli go head-to-head with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in the next general election.
He has urged PAS to make every effort to court Rafizi - who recently resigned as economy minister - and nominate him to contest the prime minister's parliamentary seat in Tambun, Perak.
The ex-law minister also encouraged the Islamist party to approach former PKR vice-president Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, suggesting that he contest in Bentong, which is DAP MP Young Syefura Othman's seat.
Both Rafizi and Nik Nazm resigned as ministers after failing to defend their respective party positions in the PKR polls.
Previously, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan clarified that while the party has no plans to recruit the two leaders into Perikatan Nasional, it would not oppose their cooperation with the opposition bloc in Parliament.

PM Anwar seeks stronger Asean-GCC push to end Gaza atrocities

This picture taken from a position near Israel's southern border with the Gaza Strip shows smoke rising over Gaza on July 9, 2024. – AFP photo PUTRAJAYA (June 7): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for stronger cooperation between Asean countries and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) to end Israel's atrocities in Gaza. Speaking to reporters after performing Aidiladha prayers at Masjid Putra here today, Anwar said that regional and international collective efforts are crucial to ending the prolonged conflict and the suffering of the Palestinian people. 'We've conveyed our stance (through a Wisma Putra statement), but this cannot be the effort of just one country. As we saw in recent engagements with Gulf nations, there is a shared consensus. 'So Asean, the Gulf states, and a few other countries can come together to provide a clear message and exert strong pressure on the world to put a stop to it (Israel's brutality),' he said. He was responding to the United States' use of its veto power on a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) draft resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the lifting of restrictions on humanitarian aid. Malaysia has expressed deep regret and disappointment over the repeated failure of the UNSC to adopt a resolution calling for an immediate and lasting ceasefire, as well as the removal of restrictions on humanitarian aid to Gaza. In a statement last Thursday, the Foreign Ministry stressed that the UNSC's repeated failure to act on one of the worst humanitarian tragedies since World War II, due to the use of veto power, is truly regrettable and deeply disappointing. Anwar also said that the continued actions of countries supplying arms to Israel are unacceptable and run counter to the principles of international law. 'It's contradictory when they issue statements of condemnation, yet continue to supply or sell weapons to Israel. Such actions violate the principles of international law and humanitarian norms. 'We strongly condemn (the atrocities) and seek diplomatic avenues to support the Palestinian struggle and help them reclaim their legitimate rights, including in Gaza,' Anwar said. Separately, during Aidiladha phone conversations with leaders of other Muslim nations, including Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Shari, Anwar said each expressed concern over the violence committed by the Zionist regime. 'All of them conveyed a clear stance … and we have agreed to continue consultations to find a resolution to this crisis as soon as possible,' he added. – Bernama anwar ibrahim asean Gaza GCC palestine

India's Modi opens strategic railway in contested 'crown jewel' Kashmir

Modi launched a string of projects worth billions of dollars for the divided Muslim-majority territory, the centre of bitter rivalry between India and Pakistan since their independence from British rule in 1947. Nuclear-armed India and Pakistan fought a four-day conflict last month, their worst standoff since 1999, before a ceasefire was agreed on May 10. "Pakistan will never forget... its shameful loss," the Hindu nationalist premier told crowds a month since India launched strikes on its neighbour after an attack on tourists in Kashmir. "Friends, today's event is a grand festival of India's unity and firm resolve," Modi said after striding across the soaring bridge to formally launch it for rail traffic. "This is a symbol and celebration of rising India," he said of the Chenab Bridge which connects two mountains. New Delhi calls the Chenab span the "world's highest railway arch bridge", sitting 359 metres (1,117 feet) above a river. While several road and pipeline bridges are higher, Guinness World Records confirmed that Chenab trumps the previous highest railway bridge, the Najiehe in China. - 'Our troubles' - Modi said the railway was "an extraordinary feat of architecture" that "will improve connectivity" by providing the first rail link from the Indian plains up to mountainous Kashmir. With 36 tunnels and 943 bridges, the new railway runs for 272 kilometres (169 miles) and connects Udhampur, Srinagar and Baramulla. It is expected to halve the travel time between the town of Katra in the Hindu-majority Jammu region and Srinagar, the main city in Kashmir, to around three hours. The new route will facilitate the movement of people and goods, as well as troops, that was previously possible only via treacherous mountain roads and by air. Modi's Hindu nationalist government revoked Kashmir's limited autonomy and took the state under direct rule in 2019. Pakistan's foreign ministry in a statement said India's "claims of development... ring hollow against the backdrop of an unprecedented military presence, suppression of fundamental freedoms, arbitrary arrests, and a concerted effort to alter the region's demography". Around 150 people protested against the project on the outskirts of Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistan-administered Kashmir. "We want to tell India that building bridges and laying roads in the name of development will not make the people of Kashmir give up their demand for freedom," said Azir Ahmad Ghazali, who organised the rally attended by Kashmiris who fled unrest on the Indian side in the 1990s. "In clear and unequivocal terms, we want to say to the Indian government that the people of Kashmir have never accepted India's forced rule." More than 70 people were killed in missile, drone and artillery fire during last month's conflict. The fighting was triggered by an April 22 attack on civilians in Indian-administered Kashmir that New Delhi accused Pakistan of backing, a charge denied by Islamabad. Rebel groups in Indian-run Kashmir have waged an insurgency for 35 years demanding independence for the territory or its merger with Pakistan. Modi also announced further government financial support for families whose relatives were killed, or whose homes were damaged, during the brief conflict --- mainly in shelling along the heavily militarised de facto border with Pakistan, known as the Line of Control. "Their troubles are our troubles," Modi said. - AFP
