New Zealanders Take 3 Million Overseas Trips

Scoop13-05-2025

New Zealand residents arrived back from 3.01 million short-term overseas trips (of less than 12 months) in the March 2025 year, according to data released by Stats NZ today.
March 2025 is the first annual period to exceed 3 million arrivals by New Zealand-resident travellers since March 2020 (3.05 million), and was up from 2.84 million in the March 2024 year.
'The number of short-term overseas trips by New Zealand residents climbed 6 percent in the March 2025 year, compared to the year before,' international travel spokesperson Sarah Drake said.
'The increase was mainly driven by more trips to Australia, as well as Indonesia, China, and Japan.'

New movie to be filmed at Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park

Aoraki Mount Cook. Photo: Supplied/Les Molloy Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park will provide the backdrop for a movie about Sherpa Tenzing Norgay's world-first summit of Mount Everest with Sir Edmund Hillary. The Department of Conservation (DOC) approved filming on Malte Brun Pass near the Tasman Glacier and near the Hochstetter Icefall on the eastern side of the mountain, which would double as Everest base camp and the famous Hillary Step on the world's highest peak. DOC ranger Ray Bellringer said while the sites had previously been used for Everest-related documentaries and films, the movie's producers had to adhere to strict rules. "All filming activities are subject to strict environmental conditions to ensure the protection of the natural landscape. DOC staff will be onsite daily to monitor compliance," he said. "This is an incredibly special place and it's our role to protect it." Bellringer said New Zealand and Nepal had a long relationship through the Himalayan Trust, particularly since 70 Nepalese students including many Sherpa had come to study nature-based tourism and community conservation at Lincoln University since 1953. "Sir Edmund Hillary dedicated much of his life after 1953 to supporting Nepalese communities. It is fitting that this project recognises the life and contributions of Tenzing Norgay and we are proud to provide a setting that supports this storytelling," he said. The company will co-produce the film with production company See-Saw Films for worldwide release on streaming platform Apple TV+ at an unknown date. BAFTA-nominated director Jennifer Peedom has a pre-existing connection to the Norgay family, who contributed to her documentaries Miracle on Everest and Sherpa . The script has been written by Luke Davies, known for the 2016 film Lion, which landed him an Academy Award nomination for best screenplay. Genden Phuntsok is to star as Norgay in Tenzing , while Hollywood star Tom Hiddleston will play Sir Edmund. Academy Award nominee Willem Defoe has been cast as English expedition leader John Hunt. The production is expected to bring a significant economic boost to the region, with a large production crew and cast staying at the village. Filming has concluded in Nepal and will begin in New Zealand next month. Tourism NZ launches new 100% Pure New Zealand global campaign

Tourism New Zealand has launched a new global campaign with a familiar twist, inviting the world to find their 100% Pure New Zealand. It's the first new global brand campaign since 'If You Seek' was launched in 2022 and aims to encourage travellers to book now with snapshots of the iconic landscapes and experiences on offer. Tourism New Zealand chief executive René de Monchy said this was a rejuvenation for the 100% Pure New Zealand brand that has been running for over 25 years. "This is our call for people around the world to be totally connected, present, inspired and fulfilled in one of the world's most breathtaking destinations," he said. The campaign complemented Tourism New Zealand's aim to grow tourism by $5 billion over the next four years by attracting more visitors outside of summer, de Monchy said. "The fact that we're encouraging people to find their 100% Pure New Zealand - we can tailor that to being 'what does it look like in the winter?' 'What does that look like in the autumn?' 'What does that look like if you're interested in the cycle trails or interested in fine dining?" It included a new experience planner to help people create their own 100% Pure New Zealand itinerary by choosing images of what they would like to experience and developing a custom itinerary. That could include telling them if they were 40 percent iconic New Zealand, 30 percent fine dining and 30 percent culture, which they could take to a travel agent to inspire their travel plans, he said. Tourism New Zealand has launched a new global campaign with a familiar twist. Photo: YouTube / 100% Pure New Zealand "You can flick through and go to and find all the different operators that sit under each of those categories, whether it's adventure tourism or fine dining," de Monchy said. "So it's really a tool that we've created to try and make it easier for you to make the booking and not just dream about it." The campaign cost about $5.45 million, launching across global social media channels and paid media in the United States on Thursday. The campaign was developed alongside agency TBWA Auckland and collaboration with iwi, regional tourism operators and the wider industry. It also included templates for regions and operators to create their own ads and showcase what they have on offer. "We're inviting the world to discover that New Zealand isn't just a place you visit, it's a place which fosters deep connection with the locals, with those you're travelling with, leaving you totally fulfilled" de Monchy said. "We know a trip to New Zealand is about more than just landscapes and landmarks. "There truly is something for everyone, whether that's adventure seeking thrills, finding - total rejuvenation in nature, or enjoying our world-class culinary scene". There were 155 million people actively considering a New Zealand holiday and he said the campaign encouraged them to make their booking now. Tourism New Zealand received two $13.5 million funding boosts from the government in recent months, aimed to boost marketing in the short and medium term. Aratere passengers stuck on board for hours because of electrical fault

Some Thursday morning sailings of the Aratere ferry have been cancelled. Photo: RNZ / Samuel Rillstone Passengers on the beleaguered Aratere ferry were stuck on board for hours overnight after it broke down on its way to Wellington. KiwiRail said the ferry left Picton at about 8.50pm, but then "experienced an unexpected issue with its propulsion drive" while sailing. That issue was fixed at about 1am and the vessel resumed its trip to Wellington, with a new expected arrival time of about 5am on Thursday. "Unfortunately, we will have to cancel the 6.15am Thursday morning sailing from Wellington to Picton and the 11.00am Picton to Wellington return sailing while we undertake further testing," a spokesperson said. "Interislander's customer service teams are currently amending bookings due to these cancellations. All affected customers will be offered an alternative sailing. If the alternative sailing is not suitable, passengers are welcome to reschedule for no additional cost. "We apologise for the inconvenience ." Seven commercial vehicle drivers and four foot passengers were on board the ferry while it was anchored for hours, waiting for a specialist electrician to arrive. "We are looking after the customers on board and once the vessel returns to port, we will transfer them to alternative sailings," the spokesperson earlier said. It was initially expected the vessel would need to return to its Picton berth and a tug was on stand-by to provide assistance. In April, another electrical fault on the Aratere, with a hydraulic pump, saw a Wellington to Picton crossing and its return journey cancelled. The Aratere made headlines when it ran aground last year. It beached in Titoki Bay, near Picton, on 21 June, after its steering autopilot was mistakenly engaged and staff were unable to switch it off. It was refloated on 23 June. Last month, KiwiRail announced the ferry would be retired by the end of August to make way for the construction of new port infrastructure in Picton. The ferry - which can hold 650 passengers, 230 cars and 28 rail wagons - is the only rail-enabled ferry in Interislander's fleet, and requires specialised loading and unloading infrastructure. Two new rail-enabled ferries are not due to arrive until 2029. Announcing its retirement, Rail Minister Winston Peters said it would have cost $120 million to keep the Aratere in service. "We will not waste one tax dollar on shuffling infrastructure to keep the vessel in service for the sake of it or add any infrastructure risk to our objective of completion in 2029."
