Alabama is providing big support for big ideas
As a high school senior, Lonnie Johnson won a 1968 science fair at the University of Alabama with a three-and-a-half-foot robot powered by compressed air and a remote control unit fashioned out of parts from a walkie-talkie. It was the first time he was publicly recognized for what would become a decades-long dedication to innovation, including projects in the U.S. Air Force's stealth bomber program and at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory—not to mention the blockbuster invention of the Super Soaker water gun, which sold millions starting in the 1990s.
Johnson—a recent inductee into the National Inventors Hall of Fame —has more than 150 patents to his name, considered to be second only to George Washington Carver among African Americans. Today, he's the founder and chairman of Johnson Energy Storage (JES) with a new focus on commercializing the solid-state batteries he's been developing for the past quarter century. JES's all-solid-state lithium batteries are lighter, safer, and cheaper than lithium ion batteries, thanks to a glass electrolyte separator Johnson developed. Car and Driver magazine calls solid-state batteries the 'holy grail' of energy storage. In addition to providing a huge boost to electric vehicles, solid-state batteries also could be used to power anything from remote sensors and RFID tags to entire electrical grids.
It's no surprise, then, that companies—including many automakers—are investing billions to get the technology to market. That competition doesn't worry Johnson. 'A lot of companies out there are working with materials that we worked on in the past. We know the limitations of those materials because we passed on them,' he says, noting that he enjoys going up against deep-pocketed rivals. 'It's classic David and Goliath—I really like taking on the big guys and beating them at their game.'
JES recently got a boost in those efforts from InvestAL, a venture capital program funded with $98 million from the U.S. Department of the Treasury State Small Business Credit Initiative (SSBCI). InvestAL made a $1 million investment in JES's Series A round alongside investors including NBA Hall of Famer Magic Johnson and NFL All-Pro defensive end Myles Garrett.
Launched by Innovate Alabama, InvestAL aims to spur economic development by matching private investments in high-growth Alabama-based companies in exchange for an equity stake. 'At some point, Dr. Johnson and his company are going to have some sort of liquidity event,' says Charlie Pond, executive director of SSBCI at Innovate Alabama. 'Then those resources will be poured back into our ecosystem to help support founders for generations to come.'
A THREE-PRONGED PLAN
In 2020, the state of Alabama kicked off an ambitious effort to supercharge entrepreneurship and technology growth in the state. Governor Kay Ivey engaged the Hoover Institution, a Stanford University think tank headed by former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, to research the best ways to support the local innovation ecosystem through public policy. Innovate Alabama was created to put the group's recommendations into action and focus on three key areas: talent development, access to resources, and lifestyle and recreation.
Pond is a passionate believer in Innovate Alabama's mission—and in the power of each of its three pillars to drive the success of the others. Alabama's natural beauty, for example, is an underutilized resource that the state's economic development leaders believe will appeal to the kind of innovators it wants to attract, allowing them to thrive personally and professionally.
Another goal is to keep more students in Alabama after they receive their diploma. In addition to the University of Alabama and Auburn University, Alabama is home to dozens of other colleges, including 13 historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). 'A lot of people come in and stay for four years, and then they leave,' Pond says. 'So, it makes sense to build out entrepreneurship programs within our universities and get students building businesses. We can help those young entrepreneurs grow roots in the state and then retain them.'
FUNDING A VIRTUOUS CYCLE
That retention happens in part through funding, including partnering with private lenders to extend credit to small businesses and entrepreneurs. With the InvestAL program, the goal is to both create jobs and catalyze private investment. 'We don't want to invest $98 million and be done,' Pond says. 'We want to build out a self-sustaining program that can continually invest in both the small businesses on the debt side and in venture-ready, high-growth, scalable companies.'
For JES, that means critical support for its Alabama operations. The company recently announced the establishment of the Dr. Lonnie Johnson Technology Research & Incubation Center on the campus of Tuskegee University. Johnson, who earned both bachelor's and master's degrees from Tuskegee, is excited about bringing the large-university research model to an HBCU and providing opportunities for Tuskegee students to work alongside the JES scientists developing cutting-edge battery technology.
It's all part of the vision that he and Innovate Alabama share for a virtuous cycle of investment and innovation that drives the state forward. 'We have a number of junior engineers who have equity in the company. I'd like to see them go off and launch companies themselves and have greater economic impact,' Johnson says. 'There's nothing like really, really ambitious goals to drive things and motivate people to put their best foot forward.'

Get a Free Marvel Rivals Future Foundation Skin and Hawkeye Skin in Season 2.5
Marvel Rivals season 2.5 is moving the Hellfire Gala afterparty to space -- our heroes are heading to the sentient planet Arakko to prevent Ultron's planet-exterminating plans from coming to fruition. Stopping a robot army is going to require a whole new wardrobe's worth of battle gear. Luckily for you, there are many ways to unlock some free skins in the hit hero shooter right now -- including a new seasonal pass that unlocks a free Mister Fantastic skin. This Combat Chest event is the debut of a secondary battle pass system in Marvel Rivals, and it's a fairly standard experience-based reward. Free-to-play gamers will be able to unlock sprays, emotes and other odds and ends but the big ticket item is the Mister Fantastic Future Foundation skin. Outside of the latest event, there are still other ways to earn free skins right now. Whether you're getting used to the new suite of team-up abilities or you're getting in more playtime on the latest addition to the Strategist roster by beaming down enemies with Ultron, season 2.5 has introduced a slate of free skins that you can use to deck out your favorite characters. Here's what you should know about the Combat Chest, the Cerebro Database Part 2 event and the rest of the free skin lineup at the beginning of Marvel Rivals season 2.5. The Combat Chest is a new type of battle pass -- it's a more traditional experience-based progression system. NetEase Games/Screenshot by CNET Get the Mister Fantastic Future Foundation skin during the first ever Combat Chest event A new type of experience-based battle pass launched at the beginning of season 2.5. The Combat Chest is a smaller, half-season battle pass that rewards consistent playtime over challenge completion. The free track contains one costume, while the premium Combat Chest (which costs 690 Lattice, or roughly $7) has two additional costume rewards. It contains 24 reward tiers and each reward tier requires 1,800 experience points to unlock. Players can earn a maximum of 7,200 experience points every day so it's theoretically possible to earn every Combat Chest reward in six days. The free Mister Fantastic Future Foundation skin is on tier 18 of the Combat Chest so it will take the most enterprising players four days to unlock the new addition to the body-bending hero's wardrobe. Premium skin rewards include Storm Ultimate Wind-Rider on tier 6 and Magneto Binary Sword on tier 24 of the Combat Chest. The first version of this shortened alternate battle pass will disappear July 11 at the end of season 2 but any players who purchase the premium version can continue unlocking any remaining tiers after that date. If you want to complete the Future Foundation skin collection, you'll have to hold your horses -- and get ready to shell out some cash. The Invisible Woman Future Foundation and Thing Future Foundation skins are included in an in-store bundle that will be released on June 13, and while we don't yet know how much they'll cost, you can expect to spend several thousand units on them. A Spider-Man Future Foundation skin is likely to appear sooner than later, but has not yet been officially revealed. Hawkeye is infected by Ultron's biomechanical virus in the new Binary Arrow skin. NetEase Games/Screenshot by CNET Get the Hawkeye Binary Arrow skin free in the Cerebro Database Part 2 event The Cerebro Database event is live now. It began with the launch of the season 2.5 patch on May 30 and ends on June 27. While this event is fairly easy, the presentation might confuse some players. As with any Marvel Rivals event, you'll need to complete challenges to earn rewards. In this event, though, each featured character (Iron Man, Black Widow, Magneto and Ultron) has nine unique challenges arranged in a 3x3 board. The new Cerebro Database event plays out just like the previous one -- including the annoying time-gated challenges. NetEase Games/Screenshot by CNET You don't need to complete all 36 challenges to receive all of the event rewards. Instead, you need to complete enough challenges to make three separate horizontal, vertical or diagonal lines on all four boards to finish the event. Basically, you're playing tic-tac-toe to quickly make three lines on all of the boards to earn your rewards as efficiently as possible. Like most Marvel Rivals events, several characters' boards are time-gated, which means that the most enterprising players have only been able to unlock the Hawkeye Binary Arrow skin starting on June 11. If you aren't gunning to complete all four sets of challenges, you can still earn Chrono Tokens, units, sprays and gallery pages. How can I get free skins during Marvel Rivals season 2.5? Players who link their Twitch account to their Marvel Rivals account right now can nab a free Emma Frost skin. But if you only care about rewards you can earn in-game, a different Emma Frost skin and an Ultron skin are available by progressing through the competitive ladder and new Iron Fist and Magik looks are available free on the season 2 battle pass. What a Spiral in the Oort Cloud Could Mean for Life on Earth
A routine planetarium show at New York's Hayden Planetarium just triggered a potentially historic discovery in astrophysics. While curating scenes for 'Encounters in the Milky Way,' a team of scientists and animators stumbled across something surprising: a spiral structure hidden within the data modeling the Oort Cloud, which is one of the most mysterious regions in our solar system. The Oort Cloud, theorized to be a spherical shell of icy objects orbiting far beyond Neptune, has long remained unseen. Yet when astrophysicist Jackie Faherty noticed the unexpected shape during a simulation, she called in Oort Cloud expert David Nesvorny to investigate, according to a CNN report. It wasn't an animation glitch. It was real data. Nesvorny, who had generated the simulation, admitted he'd never viewed his data in three-dimensional Cartesian coordinates. When he did, the spiral structure emerged clearly. 'Weird way to discover things,' he said. 'I should know my data better.' This accidental find prompted Nesvorny to run weeks of simulations on NASA's Pleiades Supercomputer. Every model confirmed it: a spiral, caused not by the sun's gravity alone, but by the galactic tide—the pull of the Milky Way's own gravitational field acting on the outermost parts of our solar system. Ultimately, he published the findings in The Astrophysics Journal. The discovery reshapes long-held assumptions. While the outer Oort Cloud might still be spherical, the inner part appears to twist in a spiral pattern, suggesting our solar system is more dynamically connected to the galaxy than once thought. Still, verifying the spiral won't be easy. The icy bodies in the Oort Cloud are too small and distant to observe directly. Even with the powerful new Vera C. Rubin Observatory, scientists expect to find only a handful—far short of the numbers needed to fully confirm the structure. But as Faherty put it, the dome of a planetarium can now double as a tool of discovery. 'This is science that hasn't had time to reach your textbook yet,' she said. What a Spiral in the Oort Cloud Could Mean for Life on Earth first appeared on Men's Journal on Jun 11, 2025

OpenAI Launches Improved Version of Latest Reasoning Model. Here's What It's Best For
OpenAI this week announced an improved version of its o3 generative AI reasoning model, saying it performed better on benchmarks and is designed to spend more time thinking on difficult problems. The new model, called o3-pro, is now available for Pro and Team users in ChatGPT and API users, and will come to Enterprise and Edu users next week. In its release notes, OpenAI said the model is similar to o1-pro, which users favored for its math, science and coding skills. It incorporates improvements from the newer o3 model, which can search the web and use more reasoning skills. "Because o3-pro has access to tools, responses typically take longer than o1-pro to complete," the company said. "We recommend using it for challenging questions where reliability matters more than speed, and waiting a few minutes is worth the tradeoff." Kevin Weil, OpenAI's chief product officer, posted on X that the company is also dropping the price of o3 in the API by 80%, and that rate limits for o3 will be doubled for Plus users. (Disclosure: Ziff Davis, CNET's parent company, in April filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging it infringed Ziff Davis copyrights in training and operating its AI systems.) OpenAI continues to build on its latest rounds of updates to its large language models, which rolled out in April. CEO Sam Altman has teased the larger release of an "open-weights" model, a kind of middle ground between open- and closed-source models that provides more insight into how the models work. He doubled down on that teasing this week, posting on X that it would be exptected later in the summer, but not in June. "[O]ur research team did something unexpected and quite amazing and we think it will be very very worth the wait, but needs a bit longer," he said.
