Frustrated for much of the game by Indiana's relentless defence, the NBA MVP Gilgeous-Alexander found a way to fight through.
He followed a three-pointer with a pull-up jumper to give the Thunder their first lead since the first half, with two minutes and 23 seconds remaining.
They would not trail again, as Gilgeous-Alexander added six free throws in the final 44 seconds.
'It's a dogfight,' Gilgeous-Alexander said. 'Every time you step on the floor, on both ends of the floor, they make you work.'

US Open: Alcaraz-Raducanu, Keys-Tiafoe, Zheng-Draper among star mixed-doubles pairings

Imagine Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu competing together for a grand slam trophy. How about Madison Keys and Frances Tiafoe as a duo? Iga Swiatek alongside Casper Ruud? Or Naomi Osaka with Nick Kyrgios? Those are among the high-wattage pairs on Tuesday's preliminary entry list for the reimagined US Open mixed doubles tournament on August 19-20, before singles competition begins on August 24. Ten of the top 11 women in the WTA singles rankings – Coco Gauff, who just won the French Open for her second grand slam title, is the only one missing – and 10 of the top 11 men on the ATP tour, including No 1 Jannik Sinner and 24-time major champion Novak Djokovic, have registered to compete for the US$1 million top prize that will be split by the winners, a US$800,000 increase over last year. 'Look at the field we have,' said Stacey Allaster, who is in her final year as US Open tournament director. 'It is going to be fantastic for the fans.' Former US Open champion Emma Raducanu could team up with Carlos Alcaraz. Photo: AP Others on Tuesday's list: Sinner and Emma Navarro, Djokovic and Olga Danilovic, Zheng Qinwen and Jack Draper, Jasmine Paolini and Lorenzo Musetti, Jessica Pegula and Tommy Paul, Mirra Andreeva and Daniil Medvedev, Elena Rybakina and Taylor Fritz, Aryna Sabalenka and Grigor Dimitrov, Paula Badosa and Stefanos Tsitsipas, Belinda Bencic and Alexander Zverev, Taylor Townsend and Ben Shelton, and 2024 US Open mixed doubles champions Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori. It is a star-studded group that is a far cry from the mix of doubles specialists usually found in a grand slam mixed doubles bracket.

Death threats, cancer wish: the vile abuse angry gamblers aim at tennis players online

Angry gamblers were responsible for 40 per cent of abuse directed at tennis players on social media last year and actively targeted athletes via direct messages, a report published on Tuesday found. The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) and the International Tennis Federation (ITF) called on the gambling industry to tackle the issue after conducting the first season-wide report outlining the scale of abuse directed at players online. Data from Signify Group's Threat Matrix service found that from January to December 2024, about 8,000 abusive, violent or threatening messages were directed at 458 tennis players via social media. 'Online abuse is unacceptable, and something that no player should have to endure,' Jessica Pegula, a member of the WTA Players' Council, said. 'It's time for the gambling industry and social media companies to tackle the problem at its source and act to protect everyone facing these threats.' Jessica Pegula wants gambling companies to do more to protect players from abuse. Thunder on brink of NBA title after game five win

Thunder on brink of NBA title after game five win Jalen Williams scored a playoff career-high of 40 points in the Thunder's victory. Photo: Reuters Jalen Williams erupted for 40 points as the Oklahoma City Thunder held off the Indiana Pacers to score a 120-109 victory and move to within one win of clinching the NBA Finals. An enthralling game-five battle in Oklahoma saw the Pacers climb out of an 18-point first-half hole to get within two of the Thunder in the fourth quarter. But just as Indiana threatened the latest in a series of trademark comebacks, the Thunder found an extra gear with Williams and NBA Most Valuable Player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander steering the team to a pivotal victory. The win put the Thunder 3-2 up in the best-of-seven series, meaning they can seal the NBA crown with victory in game six in Indianapolis on Thursday. Williams finished with a career playoff high of 40 points, along with six rebounds and four assists, while Gilgeous-Alexander co-starred with 31 points, 10 assists, four blocks and two steals. Pascal Siakam led the Indiana charge with 28 points but the Pacers were left sweating on the health of star point guard Tyrese Haliburton after the loss. Haliburton, whose fitness has been under a cloud since game two of the series, left the game in the first quarter with a right calf problem before returning later in the contest. The Pacers talisman finished with just four points from a bitterly disappointing outing – all of them coming from free throws – as the Thunder's vaunted defence clamped down on the Pacers. (AFP)
